Why Buy A Mattress Topper?
Mattress toppers are an easy way to transform the overall feel or firmness of your mattress, without dropping a ton of dough on a brand new bed. Maybe you bought a memory foam mattress only to realize a few weeks later, you actually hate memory foam. Or maybe you’re pregnant, and you want to change the feeling of your firm mattress to something softer. Our Slumber Yard member JD even took one to go camping with, and claimed it worked like a charm. Whatever your reason, mattress pads come in many different sizes and designs to fit your specific preferences, so you can find one to accommodate almost any situation.
We’re big fans of Tuft & Needle’s mattress here at The Slumber Yard, so we weren’t too surprised when we ended up crowning the Tuft & Needle topper as “editor’s choice.” One major reason is because it’s one of the only soft foam mattress toppers we’ve seen out there. In our experience, they’re usually manufactured with memory foam, or plush foam that feels like a pillow-top.
This one just feels comfortable, responsive, soft, but you don’t get that viscous feel as you do on memory foam toppers. The Tuft & Needle mattress topper is 2” thick, and doesn’t come with any straps or buttons to keep it attached to your mattress. Instead, the bottom is textured with silicone beading, and we think it does a pretty good job at keeping the mattress in place. It also comes with a soft grey cover that’ll help with upkeep and durability.
Another reason why the Tuft & Needle topper is our editor’s pick? Its attractive price tag. It’s not the most inexpensive mattress topper on the market, but it’s certainly not too pricey either. It’s a good option for people looking to purchase a quality mattress topper, while also saving a little money. You can buy a twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, or CA king, so they have a full range of sizes to choose from. A queen size goes for about $150, and they’re also known to run a few promotions here and there.
You’ll receive free shipping and free returns when you decide to purchase through Tuft & Needle’s website. They’ll also give you 100 nights to test it out, so you can ensure you’re completely satisfied with your purchase. If you decide to keep it, you’ll get a “limited warranty” that protects your mattress for three years from manufacture defects.
The Lucid mattress topper comes in two sizes, but our top pick for the best gel memory foam topper goes to the 3” model. It has a thick, soft, memory foam feel that you nestle nicely into when you lay down. It may be a little difficult to switch positions in for combination sleepers, or folks who toss and turn during the night. But if you’re a fan of memory foam, you’ll find it’s pretty cozy.
The Lucid gel-infused memory foam topper is constructed with thousands of little gel beads to aid in temperature regulation by redistributing heat, because memory foam is known to get a little warm. So we think it sleeps a cooler than other memory foam toppers out there. We want to note, however, the blue beads have a mind of their own and can get everywhere when you take the sheets off. Our suggestion is to keep a spare set around to put on the topper when you’re washing your household linens.
There are no attachments or straps to hold this topper down to your mattress, but we honestly don’t think this one needs it. It’s heavier than your average topper (probably due to the thick memory foam), and we found it stays pretty stationary on your mattress without the extra help.
The 3” Lucid Gel Memory Foam Topper comes in a range of different sizes, twin, twin XL, full, full XL, queen, king, and CA king. Just for perspective on price, a queen size goes for about $90, and a twin size topper goes for around $60. So we think this topper has a pretty great value, and is good for any shoppers who are a little price conscious. You can also purchase this topper on Amazon, and if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’re in luck because you’ll get free two-day shipping at checkout.
We also want to mention their Lavender mattress topper. Not only is it lavender in color, but it smells like it too.
Now, we know what you might be thinking, how much does it actually smell like Lavender? The scent is strong, and it’s a little overwhelming at first, actually. It’ll calm down after a week or so, but you should spring for this one if you’re a big fan of the aroma.
We put the Layla mattress at the top of our list for the best mattresses for side sleepers, so it’s only fitting we make the Layla mattress topper our top pick for side sleepers as well. It definitely earned it’s spot though, with a soft memory foam feel that gently contours to the curves of a side sleeper’s body.
The topper is 2” thick and is constructed with copper-infused memory foam, which is beneficial for a number of reasons including temperature regulation and its antimicrobial properties. The copper attracts heat away from you and your mattress to prevent you from overheating, plus it blocks and kills bacteria. It also comes with straps at all four corners of the topper so you can easily secure it to your mattress.
This topper’s cover is designed with Layla’s signature honeycomb pattern, so it’ll match perfectly with your Layla mattress if you happen to have one. Also, did we mention it was manufactured in the USA? So we think it’s also a great option for particularly patriotic folks who prefer to purchase American made products.
Price wise, the Layla topper is one of the more expensive products in this lineup, but many people are willing to invest more if it means better sleep. The queen size topper goes for about $300, and it’s available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and CA king. With that being said, it’s a high quality topper and we think you’ll get your money’s worth if you’re a side sleeper who enjoys memory foam.
Layla offers a longer warranty policy and risk-free trial period than the other brands on this list. They’ll give customers a 5-year warranty, and 120-night trial to test out your mattress topper. In addition, you’ll also receive free shipping, and free returns if you choose the Layla topper isn’t for you.
Allswell has three different mattress toppers to choose from, but we think their middle tier and premium topper are the best for folks who have lower back and hip pain, because they’re extra thick and supportive. The middle tier model is Allswell’s 4” memory foam topper infused with copper-gel. Then, their top tier model is a 4” “CoolTouch” memory foam mattress topper infused with graphite and copper-gel. Each one starts with a 2” slab of dense poly foam, and are topped with a 2″ memory foam layer.
We rated both of these toppers at a medium-firm because they’re supportive, but you can still feel the pressure relief from the memory foam. Folks with hip and back pain will appreciate that extra layer of padding and support, which is one major reason why Allswell earned this spot on our best mattress padding list.
You can find copper-gel inside the middle tier topper, which again, helps draw heat away from you so you sleep more comfortably throughout the night. The premium model kicks it up a notch and is constructed with a cooling strip in the middle of the topper (where most of your body heat is retained). It’s also infused with both graphite, and copper-gel, so we suggest particularly hot sleepers consider this topper.
We think the price of these Allswell toppers is actually really fair, considering the thickness and extra features they’re constructed with. A queen size topper in the second tier model goes for around $135, and it goes up to about $160 for the premium one. So in general, we think you’ll be getting a real good value if you end up purchasing one of Allwell’s toppers.
These toppers don’t come with a warranty policy, but you’ll receive free shipping, free returns, and 30 nights to test out your purchase to make sure you’re completely satisfied with it.
The Casper Mattress Topper is the brand’s newest product, and we were really impressed by its three layer design because we’ve never seen another a topper like it, yet. The bottom is constructed with viscoelastic foam — which to you just basically means memory foam.
The second layer is graphite latex, a super comfortable material with temperature regulation properties due to the incorporation of graphite. It essentially wicks away moisture and your body heat, allowing you sleep more comfortably at night. The final layer at the top is made out of polyurethane foam, a fancy way us mattress folk describe neutral-foam.
The combination of all three foams give the Casper Mattress Topper a really soft, and comfortable feel. It’s much lighter and airier than a topper made with dense memory foam, like the Allswell topper. It’ll soften up the feel of almost any mattress, unless your bed is already rated soft on the firmness scale.
Instead of straps or textured beading on the underside of the topper to keep it in place on your mattress, the bottom of the cover is constructed with a completely different fabric. The top is made from 82% Polyester, 16% Rayon, and 2% Lycra, with 72% Polyester, and 26% Acrylic Latex underneath. We think it works pretty well, we didn’t have any trouble with the topper moving around.
There are several sizes for the Casper Topper to choose from including twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and CA king. to choose from. Price wise, this topper is definitely more on the expensive side, but it’s not the most costly topper on our list. A queen size topper retails for about $295 — again not low but not outrageous. Especially considering how premium it feels when you lay down on it. So if you’re on a tight budget you may want to consider other toppers on this list. If you’re willing to turn a blind eye to the price, we think it’s really enjoyable.
We think the Linenspa 2” mattress topper is the ultimate option for college students because it’ll transform a dinky dorm room mattress or cheap apartment bed, for a price that’ll fit in with a top ramen budget. It has a soft memory foam feel that’s not as prominent as the 3” Lucid topper, but it’s close.
The Linenspa mattress topper is also available on Amazon, and if you’re a college student who needs their topper ASAP (because you procrastinated from buying it all summer in a typical, college student fashion), it’s eligible for Amazon Prime. It’s the same price on Amazon as it is on the Linenspa website, which is about $57 for a queen size topper.
This memory foam topper is also gel-infused to aid in keeping the mattress from heating up (as memory foam has a reputation of doing). It’s filled with thousands of tiny polyurethane gel beads (exactly like the Lucid topper), and it helps prevent your body from overheating in the middle of the night.
Similar to Lucid, this topper didn’t come with any straps or fastenings to keep the mattress from moving around on your bed, but we don’t think it needs it because it’s pretty darn heavy.
It also comes in twin, twin XL, full, full XL, king, and CA king. The Linenspa topper is definitely one of the most, if not the most affordable mattress topper we’ve ever tested. And for somebody who has to spend money on classes, books, and materials, we know that’s music to your ears.
The Birch mattress is known for its all-natural materials, and they decided to utilize those same materials for their Plush Pillow Topper. First, is organic Talalay latex responsibly sourced from tropical rubber trees found in Southeast Asia, Brazil, and Africa. This is where the bulk of this topper’s support will come from.
Next, is wool from select farms in New Zealand where sheep are pasture fed and free to roam as they please. The wool is meant to add an extra comfort component to the topper. Last, is 100% organic cotton for its moisture-wicking properties, and to allow for better breathability.
The Birch Plush Pillow Topper is about 3″ thick, and it comes in a range of sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and CA king. Price starts at $250 for a twin size topper, and goes all the way up to $500 for a king/CA king topper. That means it has earned its spot as the most expensive topper on this list. With that said, however, we think environmentally conscious folks will really see the value in it.
If you were to let yourself fall back on this topper, you don’t plop and sink like you would on an Allswell memory foam topper. Instead, you’ll feel your body slightly bounce before settling on top of it. That’s likely due to the responsive, yet supportive Talalay latex foam constructed inside. The wool and organic cotton, on the other hand, makes the topper feel plush, soft, and comfortable to sleep on.
