Before we get into this topper’s juicy details, we want to give you a quick rundown on who you’re buying from. Brentwood Home is an eco-friendly company who utilizes responsibly sourced, natural/organic materials to make every single one of their products. They manufacture everything in Los Angeles to maintain high environmental standards, and will actually plant three trees for every mattress that they sell. So when you purchase from Brentwood Home, you can rest easily knowing you’re sleeping on a non-toxic mattress and you contributed to a good cause.
The brand offers slightly different company policies for their topper than they do for their Brentwood Home mattress, but you still get the same general perks.
First things first, you’ll receive free shipping right to your front door. You’ll also be given free returns, just in case you aren’t completely satisfied with your mattress and you want to give it back.
You’ll have an entire year to test out your topper — 365 nights — which we think is pretty generous for a topper trial. At least in comparison to the other toppers we’ve tested out. If by the end of the year you decide you don’t actually like your topper, go ahead and contact their customer service team to initiate a refund.
For those of you who want to keep their Cedar Natural Latex Topper, it’ll be backed by a 10-year warranty. To find out more about what the said warranty entails, check out their official website’s FAQ page.
Brentwood Home only uses natural, and premium materials to manufacture their products (as you’ll learn in this post) so we aren’t super shocked to see that a queen size topper will cost sleepers about $500. We know some shoppers might think scoff at this steeper price tag, but hear us out.
It’s not an unreasonable price if you value products made with eco-conscious materials, and it actually costs the same as the all-natural Birch topper. We think, if you see the value in spending more money to go natural/organic, it could very well be worth it. They will also run a deal every now and then, so keep your eye out for promotions right here on our page, or on the Brentwood Home website.
So what does a natural and organic topper consist of? In this case, it’s a 2” slab of Dunlop latex split into three different sections for zoned-support and comfort, encased in a soft-to-the-touch organic cotton cover. The cover also contains high-quality New Zealand wool for additional comfort. Essentially, every piece of this topper is plant-based or stems from good ol’ mother nature.
Certifications for their latex include GREENGUARD Gold and eco-INSTITUT certified which guarantees that the Cedar Natural Latex Topper meets emission standards, and its free of harmful materials like pesticides or toxins. In addition, this topper’s cotton is GOTS certified, meaning it was tested by a third party in order to be deemed legitimately organic.
Other benefits of latex include its durability, so adding this sucker to an aging mattress can really help increase its life expectancy — maybe even more so than a memory foam or neutral-foam topper. The latex is also anti-microbial, meaning it prevents the growth of mold, mildew, or other nasty things that can build up in a mattress over a long period of time.
Most pillow toppers are meant to change up the feel of your mattress, and we think the Cedar Natural Latex Topper will give a soft pillow-top feel to just about any bed. Thick latex foam usually feels more firm than soft, but this topper has more of a medium firmness considering it’s only 2” thick and covered in cotton and wool.
Latex also tends to be pretty heavy — in fact, all-latex beds are some of the heaviest in the stack in our mattress room. This topper, though, is pretty light and neutral-feeling. The latex feel does come through in terms of responsiveness, though, as this topper is real quick to bounce back to pressure.
If you’re looking to neutralize the feel of your memory foam mattress, or soften up the firmness of your latex bed without completely changing the bouncy, supportive latex feel, we think this topper would be a good choice.
This topper comes with a quilted cover, so you’re not able to take the foam out from the inside. Accordingly, you’ll have to spot clean the cover in case of any drool stains or coffee-in-bed spills. Use warm water and a mild detergent to dab the stain away, not rub. Rubbing might push the liquid/spill even deeper into the fibers.
If you’re worried about damaging it, Brentwood Home also sells an organic waterproof mattress protector (about $100 for a queen size) that’ll keep both your bed and topper nice and clean.
On the Brentwood Home website they mention how they use cooler materials inside the topper, and that technically isn’t false. As you can see from the table below, latex foam sleeps on the cool end of the spectrum. In addition to that, organic cotton is also a more breathable, moisture-wicking material than standard cotton.
With that said, we wouldn’t necessarily say this topper sleeps cold. A cold sleeping material will either be cool-to-the-touch, or contain active cooling technology inside the construction.
The Cedar Natural Latex Topper contains aerated latex which is a more breathable material than memory foam or poly foam, but it won’t cool you down as you sleep. Instead, we think it sleeps temperature neutral.
Keep in mind, though, your mattress will probably play a larger role in how hot you sleep at night. Along wit the type of pajamas you wear, the temperature of your home, the region you live in, etc.
Overall, we think this is a really comfortable and accommodating topper. It has more of a neutral-foam feel than anything, and the medium firmness level is soft enough to make a mattress feel plush without being too soft. Not to mention, we love how they turn to mother for their resources. So w’d say this topper is a great pick if you want to:
However, if you’re looking for a traditional memory foam topper, or if you don’t see the value in spending a little bit more for organic materials, we might suggest that you do a little more research. There are quality topper options that will make your mattress feel comfortable, without chipping a chunk in your bank account.
