Adjustable Purple Bed Frame Review

We don’t like to play favorites, but we are big fans of the Purple brand and most of their products, including their Purple mattresses, and the Purple Pillow. This review, however, will focus on the adjustable Purple bed frame called the Purple Power Base. In true Purple fashion, there are a few mentionable features that make it stand out from many adjustable bases on the market. This review will explore the Purple Power Base, its construction, remote features, and much more.

Honest Purple Power Base Video Review

We’ve included a video review if you want to get the full scoop on the Purple Power Base in a more condensed format.

How To Set It Up

Once it does arrive, you will need to set it up yourself, which is pretty easy and only involves a few steps. It took us about 15-20 minutes. All we really had to do was screw the feet on, then attach the hooks at the foot of the bed (they provide an Allen wrench for this), and then flip it over, which was arguably the hardest part because this is one heavy bed frame. The queen size weighs 144 lb.

Purple Power Base Design

First off let us just say that the adjustable Purple bed frame is actually purple, but a very light and washed out purple color, like it has been sitting in the sun for way too long. If we’re being honest, it’s not our favorite look, and the hooks make it so that you can’t even get a bed skirt to cover it up, unless you get crafty with some scissors, which is not ideal. It really isn’t that big a deal though, because the purple colored base is only about 4” thick and your comforter or blankets should cover it.

Height

The base’s height is adjustable via its legs, but it’s a little tricky. The bed frame actually comes with two sets of legs that can be used separately, or together. The first set is 3” tall and the other is 5.25” tall.

  • Shortest position – 3” from the ground
  • Middle position – 5.25” off the ground
  • Tallest position – or you can combine them to have your bed sit 8.25” off the ground

This is a really great feature for older people or those with injuries, who have a hard time getting up or down, or maybe you want it shorter for your pets to hop up on your bed. And then you can make it taller if you like to store stuff under your bed, but we think it’s worth mentioning that even at its tallest position, it’s not as tall as a lot of other adjustable bed frames we’ve seen.

Sizes

This Purple Mattress bed frame is available in the sizes twin XL, queen, king, and split king.  A king and split king size are just two twin XL’s pushed together, so that couples can have different settings while still sleeping next to each other.  The king adjustable base is designed to accommodate a regular king size mattress, and the sides can be synced up to work together. Say your wife is pregnant, and you have a foot injury; we the split king would be a great option for you.

A Look At The Purple Remote And Features

Adding a dock for the remote was a nice touch

So let’s talk about all the fun features that this bed frame has. First, obviously it’s adjustable at the head and foot of the bed. It moves relatively quickly and is probably the quietest bed frame we’ve tested.

Zero Gravity – Within its adjustability, Purple has pre-set two settings. One is a “Zero Gravity” position, which was found by NASA to be the optimal body position to reduce pressure on the body.

Anti-Snore – The other pre-set setting is the “snore” position, which slightly elevates your head so that your airways open up a bit and you are less likely to snore.

Massager – There’s also the massage feature, which is zoned for either the top half of the bed or the bottom half. Purple states that their massager is different from others because it uses patented resonant-frequency massagers that can dilate your blood vessels, which results in better blood flow. This can lower blood pressure, help to reduce stress, and “rejuvenate the body.”

After testing, we’d have to say that the Purple PowerBase has the best massaging feature that we’ve tested so far. It almost numbs the body with its vibrations, and it’s very relaxing. And this should be compatible with just about any mattress you use, not just those from Purple.

Mobile App – You can control this bed frame either through its provided wireless remote or the iOS app on your iPhone/Android.

Under-bed Light – Just to note, it’s not cool aesthetic lighting, it’s more like a tiny light under the bed in case you drop something in the middle of the night. All in all, though, we love the remote with the bed frame and really appreciate how many options and controls they provide you.

Docking Station – The remote comes with a dock station, which has a USB port on the front and extra outlet on the back. We really like this feature because it looks nice and it’s convenient to have it all in one spot. The app is nice if you’re someone who likes to lay in bed on their phone, and it has additional preset positions like “watch TV,” “read,” and “recover.”

Backlit Remote – One under-appreciated part of the remote is that it’s backlit. Only about 50% of the remotes we see with these adjustable bed frames are backlit. Nicely done Purple—thinking of everything.

We do want to note how our Purple bed frame would suddenly stop working with the remote or the app. However, we contacted Purple’s customer support and they responded that day, offering to replace our unit because it’s covered under our warranty. So while it was annoying that we got a faulty base, they more than made up for it with great customer service.

What Does The Power Base Cost?

This is a moderately expensive adjustable bed frame, one of the most expensive that we’ve tested so far. But I’m sure you can tell why after all the cool features we just talked out. A queen size will set you back about $1,500, which is double that of some other adjustable bed frames we’ve tested. Purple also very rarely offers discounts, but sometimes they’ll add free gifts with a qualifying purchase. You can check our Mattress Deals & Coupons page to see if we’ve spotted something today.

SIZEPRICE (MSRP)
Twin XL$1,399
Queen$1,499
King$2,798
Split King$2,798

We say, if you can afford it and you see the value in it, absolutely go for it. The rest of us will be sleeping jealously on our boring bed frames.

Purple Company Policies

Like most things online, the Purple PowerBase comes with free shipping. Although, it won’t ship as quickly as if you buy protein bars on Amazon—it’s a rather large, heavy package. You can see all the details on Purple.com.

Purple states that due to the nature of this product, they don’t offer a trial period or returns, so once you get it, we sure hope you like it. For the record, this is the case with most of these types of products, excluding the Leesa Adjustable Base and Nectar Adjustable Base, which both provide you the trial period and return option. The Purple PowerBase does, however, come with a 25-year warranty, which is a good deal longer than any other bed frame warranties we’ve seen so far.

Frequently Asked Questions
How did you guys get this power base?

It was sent to us, but unfortunately we didn’t get the complimentary white glove delivery so we had to set it up ourselves. We’re friends with Purple, but that doesn’t mean we get paid by them. All opinions are completely our own.

You mentions Purple has other products?

Yes! They have the Original Purple mattress, the New Purple mattresses, two Purple pillows, a Purple Blanket, and Seat Cushions.

What is Hyper-Elastic Polymer?

Hyper-Elastic Polymer is the famous gel-like material that Purple uses in their mattresses and cushions. It’s laid out in a grid, which leaves a lot of room for airflow, which keeps things on the cooler side. It’s also very supportive while still offering great pressure relief. Oh, and it’s the color purple.

Does the Purple PowerBase have a weight limit?

Yes, 850 lb. That’s a lot. You’re basically looking at a mattress and two 300 lb people.

Does the PowerBase come with a remote?

Yes, it comes with a wireless remote and dock.

Do both sides of the bed frame adjust?

They do. You can independently control both sides of the bed frames.

Is the bed frame sturdy?

It sure is. The frame has very little wiggle or give.
