Intro To Tuft & Needle

If you’re even slightly familiar with bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ve probably heard of Tuft & Needle as they’re one of the most well-known brands in the online space. Their success can partly be accredited to their low-cost products, because they’re accessible for any type of sleeper regardless of their budget. Their platform bed has a similar story, as it’s one of the more affordable bed frames that have been sent to us.

Accordingly, if you’re keen on saving money or you’re already a fan of the Tuft & Needle brand, we encourage you to continue on to see what this bed frame is all about.

Overview Of Tuft & Needle Company Policies

Before we get into all the details on the Tuft & Needle Contrast Platform Bed Frame, we are going to briefly discuss their different policies including a risk-free trial, shipping, and warranty coverage.

As standard in the online mattress industry, you’ll receive free shipping to your front door and your bed frame will arrive in a box ready to be assembled. Set-up takes about 20-30 minutes depending on how handy you are, but the process isn’t as grueling as an Ikea dresser or something along those lines.

You’ll receive 100 nights to test out the bed frame, and if by the end of the trial you end up wanting to return it, you’ll be able to receive a full refund.

If you want to keep your bed frame, which most of their customers do, it will be backed by a 12-year limited warranty which means they don’t cover every part of the frame. If you want to know about everything its warranty entails, head over to their website for all the additional details.

Platform Bed Pricing

Bed frames made with high-quality steel and wood can be pretty steep in price, but Tuft & Needle offers a nice bed frame that’s also nice on your wallet. It might not be the budget-tier frame, but we definitely think it offers a good value.

Unfortunately, if you have anything smaller than a queen or king, you’ll have to look elsewhere. As of right now, this frame is offered in two sizes.

SizePrice (MSRP)
Queen$795
King$995

We want to mention that Tuft & Needle often offers discounts on their products, so it’s likely that you’ll be able to get your hands on this bed frame for even cheaper. Usually, we see promotions running for anywhere between 10-20% off. Check the right side of this page for a green box containing our promo code, or take a peek at Tuft & Needle’s official website for the most up-to-date pricing.

Contrast Platform Bed Materials And Construction

The Contrast Platform Bed has a minimalist and natural style. It’s made with GREENGUARD Gold Certified solid wood, veneered wood, and powder-coated steel.

The frame and center beam of the mattress is made from the steel, so it’s sturdy and you won’t need a box spring for additional support. The legs of this platform bed are made out of hardwood, and available in different finishes depending on the color combination you find most appealing. In the middle there are six different slats, designed extra thick to provide proper support.

All of the wood pieces found in this mattress are made in Minnesota, while their steel pieces are manufactured internationally and shipped into the United States.

Highlight Bed Frame Features

We want to go over a few of the notable specs for this bed frame, like the small touches they added to ensure the platform bed not only looks nice, but is ultra functional.

Below are the dimensions of the two different size options:

  • Queen: 83″ L x 62 1/2″ W x 32″ H
  • King: 83″ L x 78 1/2″ W x 32″ H

There is about 8” of space between the floor and the bottom of the frame, so you’re able to utilize that additional space for storage purposes. Or you can leave it open as a solid hide-and-go-seek spot for your kids! Either way, you’ll have a lot of space underneath your bed.

A closeup of the steel frame, oak wood legs, and roomy under-bed space

Other bed frames on the market with included headboards leave a significant amount of space in between the bed and the board. So you won’t have to worry about losing a phone through the cracks, or a pillow becoming lodged in between your wall and mattress.

Like we said before, this platform bed is only available in two sizes: queen and king. You also get two color wave choices, so we think it’s pretty likely you’ll find one to match your bedroom. The black and oak bed looks more sleek and classic, while the white walnut frame has a more light and gentle aesthetic.

The weight capacity of the frame is 800 lbs, which is pretty durable and most people shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not it will support them, and their partner if they share a mattress with a loved one.

The weight of the frame itself depends on the size you get, but a queen is around 165 lbs or so. In comparison to other bed frames, like ones made from solid wood, it isn’t too heavy. So if you’re someone who likes to rearrange your bedroom furniture often, this might be a plus for you.

Caring For Your Platform Bed

Like any material investment, you have to take proper care of this platform bed to ensure it lasts as long as it’s intended to (which seems to be about 12 years, judging by their warranty policy).

To upkeep your mattress, you’ll want to wipe it down every so often with a damp cloth, and wipe it dry immediately — like when you wash and dry your own car. For more stubborn marks you want to clean, dip a cloth into a combination of cool water and a mild soap, wipe down, and dry it quickly after.

Don’t leave your platform bed to air dry. It’s made with real wood, and you risk damage if you leave it saturated with too much moisture for too long.

On the Tuft & Needle website, they also make note that it’s not scratch resistant. We wouldn’t say it’s a flimsy or unsteady bed frame, just be careful not to ding anything too hard against the frame.

Slumber Yard Verdict

We know we just threw a ton of information at you, so let’s consolidate all of our thoughts into a few simple points.

One, we think you’ll like this slatted bed frame if you’re in the market for something quality, durable, and simple. The Tuft & Needle Contrast Platform Bed doesn’t have any fancy features, but it’s more appealing than your basic black metal bed frame. We think the style is minimalist, natural, and contemporary. It’s very simple, but in the best way. The wood is also high-quality, regardless if you choose the oak or walnut model.

Most people probably won’t go wrong buying this, unless you’re looking for a twin, twin XL, full, or Cal king size frame. Unfortunately, this frame isn’t yet available in those sizes. It also might miss the mark if you want upgrades like the ability to raise or lower the foot/head of your frame, a massager, under-bed light, built in USB cables, etc. If that’s the criteria you want in a bed frame, adjustable bases will be more up your alley.

If you aren’t sure which direction to head in from here, feel free to check out our best list on our favorite adjustable bases, or read up on the Zinus SmartBase.

FAQs

How did the Slumber Yard get this bed frame?

Tuft & Needle sent us their bed frame because we have educated individuals on our team who give valid, fair, and honest reviews. In exchange for sending their bed, we post our review on our website.

Will I need a box spring to use this frame?

Nope! No box spring is necessary, this frame is built to be supportive enough without one.

Can I use my own headboard?

They advise against using your own headboard. This frame is built specifically for the one they provide you with, and it may not be able to support yours. If you try and connect your own, it also might void the warranty.

How do returns work?

You’ll be given a 100-night trial if you decide you want to purchase the Contrast Platform Bed Frame. If within those 100 nights you decide you want your money back, reach out to their customer service team to initiate the process.

Will this frame fit my Cal king mattress?

As of right now, the answer is no. This bed frame is only available in queen and king sizes. If you’re still curious in the future, check back here or their website see if they’ve made any changes.
