Top 7 Best Latex Mattresses Of 2021

Latex Mattress Review Overview

While a latex mattress might sound weird at first if you aren’t familiar with the material, they can be very comfortable and offer certain benefits not found in other mattresses. Latex foam looks similar to a smooth sponge, with several rows of tiny holes to allow for increased airflow. It offers contoured support similar to memory or poly foam mattresses, but the main benefits of latex is its resilience, durability, breathability, and antimicrobial/hypoallergenic properties.

We’ve chosen the following six best latex mattresses based on our team members’ experience testing over 150 beds, including latex beds of all varieties; Dunlop, Talalay, natural, organic, and synthetic. If you’re interested in learning about latex beds and the ones that have stood out to us the most, continue on below!

You can add on a 2″ topper for additional comfort

Avocado is an organic and natural latex mattress with environmentally-friendly, non-toxic materials. This is a bed that combines recycled steel pocketed coils with certified organic latex, wool and cotton. Altogether, it is 11” thick (13” if you get the optional topper) and is tailor made for back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

If you get the standard model, it will be a pretty firm mattress and will only be suitable for back and stomach sleepers. However, if you add on the topper (which costs extra), the bed will be a bit softer and can then accommodate combination sleepers that like to rotate between several sleeping positions at night.

Additionally, because this latex bed is made of coils and organic latex foam, it is highly durable and supportive, so much so that even heavier folks can sleep on Avocado for years to come.

Why we added Avocado – The bottom line with Avocado is that it’s probably the most sought after latex hybrid mattress online, and we can totally understand why. It’s a certified organic mattress suitable for all body types, and the optional pillow top gives it a slightly more plush feel to accommodate a wider range of sleepers.

PlushBeds Mattress Review Overhead
the 10″ queen size PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress

PlushBeds is one of the most environmentally-friendly mattresses you can purchase, as it’s materials consist of organic Dunlop latex, organic cotton, and organic New Zealand wool.

You’re getting an ultra clean and green sleeping experience with PlushBeds. You can also customize the firmness. It’s available in medium or medium-firm, but you can also rearrange the layers in your mattress to achieve an even softer/firmer feel.

Price depends on the mattress thickness you decide on: 9″, 10″, or 12″. The 10″ queen size mattress, for scale, is around $1,800.

We we added this latex mattress – PlushBeds is entirely made of organic latex foam and other organic materials, and while it isn’t as suitable for heavy sleepers like Awara or Avocado, it does offer customizable firmness levels thanks to the rearrangeable latex foam layers. As such, we’d suggest this bed to any sleeper position!

There’s a lot to like with the Awara mattress

One of the most underrated beds sold online, Awara is packed with interesting qualities and is a really nice value. For starters, it uses latex and coils for a bouncy, supportive feel. It’s also offered at a very approachable price point (queen size is below $1,300 after discount).

Since the bed uses coils (which allow for good airflow) and latex foam (which has more of an open-cell construction), you should sleep cooler on this bed at night. It won’t be cool to the touch, but it also won’t heat up as much as a pure memory foam bed. And the kicker with Awara is that it comes with a “forever” warranty.

Why we picked Awara Mattress – Awara is a firm natural and organic latex mattress that is likely too firm for most side sleepers. That said, for back and stomach sleepers, it’s a fantastic option, particularly if you want a natural and organic bed. It’s also very likely the best affordable latex hybrid mattress that you can buy right now, especially under $1,300. Plus, it’s hard to beat that Awara Forever warranty.

Stomach, back, and most combination sleepers will probably like the feel and firmness of My Green Mattress

My Green Mattress is a wallet-friendly organic and natural latex mattress that starts with 8.5″ pocketed coils, and uses organic latex and natural wool in its comfort layers. It even has an organic cotton, quilted cover that we very much like. We really can’t pick holes in this mattress if you’re somebody looking for that bouncy and supportive latex foam feel.

And the area where Natural Escape does get the edge is on price–it’s very cheap and affordable. For the queen size, the retail price for a queen is about $1,300, but like a lot of these other companies, My Green Mattress is open to the coupon game. In fact, they frequently promote deals and specials on their website where you can save $100, if not more.

Why we chose My Green Mattress – For anyone that is especially health-conscious, but also price-conscious, the Natural Escape mattress from MyGreenMattress.com has to be on your short list. This bed reminds us a lot of Avocado in the sense that it’s durable, supportive, and is made with certain natural and organic materials. However, it’s extremely affordable.

zenhaven mattress review side sleepers
One of the nicest flippable mattresses out there

Zenhaven is a product of Saatva, one of the largest and most recognized online mattress brands. Zenhaven is completely made of Talalay latex with an organic cotton cover and luxurious look to it.

It also happens to be double-sided. The bottom is firmer and best for back and stomach sleepers, while the top is slightly softer and is able to accommodate combination sleepers, as well. It’s not going to be a mattress for strict side sleepers that want a plush pillow top feel, but it will be excellent if you favor your back and stomach throughout the night. And remember that latex foams tend to be really durable.

We don’t love the price of Zenhaven, but by traditional retail standards, it’s actually fairly affordable. You have to remember that latex beds are usually the most expensive since latex foam is a more premium, more expensive material. With that in mind, you can check current prices and offers on Zenhaven’s website. The queen size is usually under $2,000, and that includes free delivery, setup, and old mattress removal.

Why we added this latex bed – It’s not the easiest mattress to move (it’s heavy and bendable), but it is a darn good–perhaps the best– Talalay latex foam mattress available today, particularly if you want something that gets the “luxury” stamp of approval. We also love how it offers a two-in-one firmness design, so sleepers essentially has two chances to find their perfect firmness level.

EcoCloud has a simple, classic look, but it’s a really nice bed

EcoCloud isn’t exactly the most well-known latex bed, but it’s a darn good one nonetheless. It’s actually a mattress made by WinkBeds, one of the most respected online mattress brands out there. They make extremely high quality beds and sell them for reasonable prices. That’s pretty much exactly what the EcoCloud is.

If you look at the entire spectrum of latex beds, most of them are on the firmer side because latex is a more responsive material that doesn’t typically feel as pressure relieving as memory foam. The EcoCloud mattress, however, is about a medium on our firmness scale, meaning it’s a good deal softer than the other beds on this list.

Just to be clear, WinkBeds is not a “plush” mattress, but it is softer than you’d expect given that it has Talalay latex and coils. We find it to be universally accommodating and workable for just about every sleeping position for individuals over 150 lbs, but especially side sleepers looking for a latex bed.

Why we picked this latex bed – The bottom line is that EcoCloud is a premium quality eco-friendly bed, with a firmness level that’s more accommodating to side sleepers who want a latex foam mattress with ample pressure relief and plushness. It’s also backed by WinkBeds’ lifetime warranty!

An overview of the comfortable EcoSleep Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding has a reputation for its high-quality mattress offerings at very reasonable prices, and it’s no different for EcoSleep considering it’s a part of the BB Bedding family.

Not only is this one of the most affordable latex beds we’ve tested, it’s also double-sided like Zenhaven Mattress. One side was rated around a medium-firm on our scale, and the other a solid firm. Though, unlike the luxury Zenhaven, EcoSleep starts at $1,249 for a queen size bed before discounts, which is extremely affordable for its two-in-one firmness offering.

The comfort layers are made with natural Talalay latex foam, while the support structure in the middle is a system of 6″ pocketed coils. As such, it’s suitable for all body types including heavier individuals. Our only caveat would be petite side sleepers, because they need a more plush profile to appropriately accommodate their pressure points.

Why we chose this mattress – We think it’s a versatile, durable, eco-friendly mattress that’s just as nice on your bank account. It’s ideal for any back, stomach, or heavy sleeper who’s looking for a durable mattress that provides two different firmness options; giving you two chances to find the most comfortable firmness profile.

Dunlop vs Talalay Latex Foam

Dunlop is an older manufacturing process than Talalay, but both start with the sap from a rubber tree—if you’re dealing with all natural latex foam. The Dunlop process essentially bakes the rubber tree sap into a slab. It will always have little pinholes in it. Dunlop tends to be denser and more affordable.

Talalay latex, since it’s a new manufacturing technique, is more expensive and less common. It also tends to be lighter and airier.

Both latex foams can be all natural, but you will more commonly see Dunlop, especially with online mattress brands. As an FYI, latex is 100% all natural in its liquid form (it’s just sap after all), but various other chemicals are usually added in the process of forming the actual foam. Thus, the end result is something like 95% all natural and 5% other chemicals.

Latex Mattress For Side Sleepers

When it comes to sleeper types, side sleepers represent the majority. Based on our research of 2,000+ people, nearly 70% of people identify as a primary side sleeper. As such, let’s start there and then we’ll discuss back, stomach, and side sleepers.

Side sleepers generally want a bed between soft and medium, sometimes medium-firm depending on body type, in terms of firmness so that they get plenty of pressure relief in their shoulders and hips. If the bed is too firm, they’ll have issues with their shoulders, torso, and hips.

Latex Mattress For Back And Stomach Sleepers

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer a firmer, more supportive mattress so that their hips and shoulders don’t sag and cause alignment issues. Luckily for you, there are plenty of firm latex mattresses from which you can choose. The vast majority of all natural latex beds are fairly firm, and the same goes for latex hybrid mattresses.

Latex Mattress For Combo Sleepers

As for combo sleepers, they will generally want a medium-soft up to a medium-firm bed. They still need support and pressure relief, so somewhere in the middle of the firmness scale is ideal. They won’t want a firm mattress, nor will they want a latex one designed just for side sleepers.

Overview Of Brand Company Policies

If you decide to buy a mattress online, there are some notable policies that you should be aware of. Let’s start with shipping. Nearly all mattresses sold online come with free shipping—many of them actually show up in a box. With latex beds, however, in some cases they’re too heavy to be shipped via UPS or FedEx so the company will offer free white glove delivery, which means a regional delivery firm will bring the mattress by and set it up for you.

From this point, you will almost always have a trial period, which is your opportunity to try the bed out for yourself to see if it is indeed the bed you were hoping for. Typically the trial period is about 100 nights, although we’ve seen some companies offer as much as 365 nights. Regardless of the length of the trial period, you should think critically about whether this is the bed you want to sleep on for the next seven or more years.

Most mattresses will soften over time—although less so with latex beds—so you should take the time to break them in evenly. We usually recommend that you walk on the mattress for a minute or two every night for the first month so that the mattress wears evenly. Your body also needs time to adjust to the mattress, so don’t rush to judgement after five minutes with it.

At any point during the trial period, if you decide that you don’t want to keep your new bed, you can get a full refund (in almost all cases). This is part of the reason that these online mattress companies are experiencing such unbelievable success. The vast majority of people keep their new bed, but in the event that they don’t, there isn’t much of a downside because they can still get their money back. Most companies even send someone to your house to pick up the bed free of charge, making the entire return process completely free.

In the event that you keep your new mattress, the industry standard for warranty length is 10 years. If you see a bed with a shorter warranty (especially a latex bed), you should do a double take and consider a different option, unless it’s a cheap, budget mattress. Let’s put it this way, of the dozens of mattresses we’ve compared and reviewed, very few offer less than a 10-year warranty. In fact, for this list, the majority of the beds have warranties well in excess of 10 years.

What Are The Best Latex Mattress Brands?

As we mentioned above, we’ve reviewed more beds than just about anyone. We’ve tried cheap beds, luxury beds, and everything in between, including when it comes to latex mattresses. As such, we have a great idea as to what the best brands are. Here’s a look at some of our favorites:

  • Avocado Green Mattress
  • Amore Beds
  • Awara Sleep
  • EcoCloud by WinkBeds
  • Happsy
  • Helix Sleep
  • My Green Mattress
  • Naturepedic

How Long Will A Latex Mattress Last?

One of the biggest benefits of latex is its durability at an affordable price compared to other mattress options on the market. 100% all-natural latex is naturally fire-resistant and made of rubber materials. Its rubber-like properties mean it’s naturally resistant against weight and pressure. Regardless of your weight or if you sleep as a couple, latex can handle the pressure to prevent sinking and buckling.

You can expect your latex mattress to last up to 20 years, which is much longer than most mattresses’ average lifespan. Latex is also naturally more hygienic than other mattress materials by being more resistant to mold, odors and dust mites. Since it has natural protective properties, companies don’t have to treat these mattresses with protective chemicals. As long as you treat your mattress with proper care, it can hold up to standard long-term use.

Construction And Materials Of A Latex Mattress

When it comes to mattress construction, there are two basic types for you to choose from: all-foam and hybrid. All-foam is exactly what it sounds like—a mattress constructed of all foam materials. A hybrid mattress is made with a combination of both foam and coils. There’s also a third option of beds that incorporate gel, though those are less common.

While there are only a few overall construction options, the layers within those constructions come in many variations. Some mattresses have three layers, some have seven, and there are options for everything in between. Every company is different. And the materials used for each layer vary, as well.

Latex beds vary from company to company. Some options contain 100% latex, while others offer mixed latex and synthetic mattresses to cut costs and offer a different type of support. Some of the most common materials of latex mattresses include:

  • Styrene Butadiene Rubber – Plastic material often used as a substitute for natural rubber
  • Talalay Latex – This latex is characterized by the method used to turn it into a mattress. With Talalay latex, manufacturers will mold with half latex and half air. The combination creates a more cushioned feel for softer latex beds.
  • Dunlop Latex Foam – Dunlop Latex Foam is used in firm beds. Unlike Talalay Latex, the Dunlop method fills mattress molds with 100% latex, creating a more dense mattress.

For this post, the star material is latex foam. Latex foam has a sponge-like feel. It’s very bouncy and airy and stays cooler than traditional memory foam. It’s also more durable over the long run than poly foam, so keep that in mind. You’ll typically pay more for a latex foam mattress, but it is more durable and resilient. In general, latex foam is a higher quality foam than anything that’s petroleum-based (such as memory foam).

Analyzing each material used in your mattress isn’t as helpful as understanding how it works for your body (aka firmness, feel, etc), but it can be helpful in the selection process. Consider 100% latex mattresses if durability and natural materials are important to you, while synthetic latex can be better for customers on a budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is latex foam?
Latex foam is a naturally-derived material that’s made from the sap of a rubber tree. It has a spongey/airy quality to it. It also happens to be resilient and breathable.
What are the best latex mattress brands?
There are a lot of great latex mattress brands, but some of our favorites include Avocado, Naturepedic, Plush Beds, My Green Mattress, Nest Bedding, and WinkBeds.
Are latex mattresses good?
They are! We really like them because they are resilient, responsive, and breathable.
Are they firm?
They can be, but they aren’t always. We have tested plenty of soft and firm latex mattresses, and everything in between.
Which is better, memory foam or latex mattress?
Memory foam and latex mattresses have similar qualities since they both offer contoured support and usually include fewer materials than other mattresses. Foam mattresses are better if you enjoy fully-contoured support, while latex beds are a bit more firm and bouncy.
How thick should a latex mattress be?
The thicker a mattress, the more durability and support it will provide. Lightweight sleepers may be comfortable on a slimmer latex bed, while heavier people and couples should invest in a thick mattress.
