If you’re shopping for a new mattress, one of the most important things you need to consider is your weight. Your weight and body type will influence your experience on each bed. For example, soft mattresses will feel even softer to heavier folks because they sink further into the mattress. If you weigh over the 230 lbs range, you should be extra diligent in finding a mattress that supports you correctly for a long time. The best mattresses for heavy people are made with coils for maximum support and durability.

In this list of the best beds for heavy people, we include options for your preferred sleeping position, feel, and budget. Throughout our time testing 175+ mattresses around the clock, we’ve determined which beds lived up to our expectations and which ones fell under pressure — body pressure, that is.

  • Why Our Picks Are Best For Big People

Thick, luxurious mattresses with coils are both comfortable and supportive for full figure sleepers, and are typically more durable than beds constructed solely out of foam. We’ve narrowed down the best beds for heavy people to seven coil and hybrid options that we think you’ll love to sleep on. Now, you may be wondering how we would know which bed is better or worse for heavy people. Well, we have a team of editors and production staff, some of which are over 200 lbs and they are our in-house experts on the subject. They’re going to help you to hopefully avoid getting a mattress that will last all of nine months. Trust us, we have tested some beds that broke down completely after just a few months with an overweight individual sleeping on them. The beds on this list, however, have proven themselves to withstand the test of time for all body types including heavy sleepers.

Why Helix Plus wins as one of the best mattresses for plus size couples

Helix Sleep is the company that gives its customers a wide range of options to choose from to accommodate every type of sleeper perfectly. Helix Plus, for instance, is designed to support heavy people. And the reinforced perimeter allows two people to spread to every corner without fearing rolling off the bed.

Helix Plus has a soft, neutral foam feel, but you get a bit of bounce because of those coils. As such, it’s great for people who don’t like that sinking, contouring, and hugging feel that you get with a lot of memory foam beds. This bed is about a medium for heavy people and medium-firm for average or petite sleepers on our firmness scale.

Helix Plus’ most notable features

  • This is a 13″ mattress with 8″ thick gauge pocketed coils that are taller than what you’ll get with most innerspring beds.
  • The bed has a dense layer of base support foam and several layers of comfort foam. Overall, Helix uses higher density foams for this mattress to provide better support for plus-size bodies.
  • The cover uses a proprietary Tencel airflow technology that should prevent you from overheating at night. It won’t actively cool you down, but it won’t warm up either.
  • Helix actually has an entire page on their website dedicated to the Plus mattress.

Why we picked this bed

Why Big Fig wins as best bed for heavy back and stomach sleepers

Big Fig’s tagline is “the mattress for a bigger figure,” and they mainly advertise to big guys and gals as a result. They make some of the best mattresses a heavy person can get. They address most of the issues that large people experience, such as mattress sag, body impressions, heating up, and poor edge support. They’ve created a very durable mattress consisting of pocketed coils, poly foam, and latex foam.

We rate it at about a medium-firm to firm, meaning it’s great for heavy stomach sleepers and back sleepers, but combo sleepers will probably be fine as well. The mattress will provide just enough pressure relief when you’re on your side. If you’re a strict side sleeper, however, there are better options out there for you.

Big Fig’s most notable features

  • Big Fig uses 50% more coils than the typical innerspring mattress.
  • The bed has a ThermoGel cooling technology in the topper that is designed to regulate your body temperature. Combined with the perforated latex comfort layer, the coils and the firm profile make for an ideal mattress for people who sleep hot.

Why we picked this bed

Bottom line, Big Fig is a lovely, well-made mattress that can handle some really heavy people. Plus, it’s nice that the bed comes with a sturdy foundation. This way, there’s no trouble with voiding the warranty thanks to a faulty supportive base.

Why The WinkBed wins as the best mattress for heavy side sleepers

The WinkBed offers four different firmness levels for their mattress. The “Softer” model is perfect for side sleepers that need a bed with a good balance between pressure relief and support. In terms of what they feel like, well, WinkBed mattresses feel like exactly what they are: extra-supportive innerspring beds with a fluffy pillow top.

We also like that The Winkbed has a Plus version for the morbidly obese. It was specially designed to support people who are over 300 lbs. If you weigh less than that, any WinkBed model should be fine according to your firmness and sleeper type preference.

The “Luxury Firm” is their most popular version, and it can accommodate all sleeping positions. This would be our pick for the best mattress for a heavy person who sleeps in their side. The “Firmer” version is designed just for stomach sleepers and back sleepers.

The WinkBed’s most notable features

  • This mattress is 15″ tall, one of the thickest ones we’ve tested in the Slumber Yard. This makes for a long-lasting bed that Consumer Reports rated as “Excellent” for durability.
  • We get a lot of confidence that WinkBed has a lifetime warranty, and all of the beds are made in the United States.
  • The Tencel cover is plant-based and certified as a safe, non-toxic textile. To top that, it’s super soft and fluffy and adds a luxurious look to the bed.

Why we picked this bed

Thanks to WinkBeds’ “Softer” firmness option and durable design, we had to name it as our best mattress for heavy side sleepers. Not only are the beds very comfortable, but also they’re evidently built to a higher standard than your typical online-only mattress. WinkBed has got this whole mattress game figured out—and they even have a bed designed explicitly for heavy-set sleepers.

Saatva really paid attention to every fine detail here. This mattress utilizes various materials to achieve a very supportive yet airy, plush pillow-top feel. It’s made with a durable innerspring support layer wrapped in foam to enhance edge support, memory foam, and Talalay latex foam with a 5-zone design.

For additional coziness, it also has an organic cotton cover with a comfortable foam quilted underneath. They made the mattress more neutral as far as firmness goes, and we rated it a medium on our own Slumber Yard scale. That means we think it’s suitable for all sleeper types whether you favor your back, side, stomach, or a combination of all three.

Saatva HD’s most notable features

  • Saatva HD was designed to support people up to 500 pounds in every sleep position. It has some patented technology that adds support where you need it and Talalay latex for pressure relief.

Why Titan wins as the best mattress for large people on a budget

Titan is one of the newer bed in a box mattresses for heavy and obese people on the market, but it’s made and owned by Brooklyn Bedding, which is widely considered one of the best mattress manufacturers in the United States. Rather than go upstream by building the biggest, thickest mattress on the market, they decided to make a budget option that’s still highly durable but costs way less than its competitors.

The MSRP for the bed in the queen size is $1,099, which alone makes it the most affordable bed on this list, but they typically offer discounts as well. You can visit TitanMattress.com to see their current deals and specials. We would not be surprised to see you get the bed for closer to $800.

The Titan Firm mattress is constructed with 2″ of base foam, 6″ pocketed coils, 2″ of a proprietary TitanFlex Foam, and 1″ of gel memory foam that’s stitched into the cover. The overall feel is pretty neutral and flat—a bit like Big Fig—but we do find it really comfortable, especially considering the bed will feel softer for heavier people. You can also go for the Titan Luxe mattress, which has a medium-firm profile but will feel softer for heavier people, so it would be a better option if you sleep mostly on your side. The Luxe version has a plush pillow top mattress as well.

Titan’s most notable features

  • The king-size has over 1,000 coils, making it easily the best king-size mattress for a heavy person.
  • For an extra couple hundred dollars, Titan will sew a cooling panel to the surface of the bed, which should help keep you cool at night. We didn’t get the chance to test the panel, but the material is pretty much the same as the company uses in the Brooklyn Aurora mattress, which is one of the coolest beds we’ve tried.

Why we picked this bed

We think this mattress is a nice budget mattress for plus-size sleepers, considering several of the other beds on this list can be a little too costly for some people. And that’s clearly what Brooklyn Bedding was going for with Titan, a durable yet affordable and supportive mattress.

Why DreamCloud Premier wins as best memory foam mattress for heavy people

DreamCloud Premier is a super thick mattress (14″) that incorporates coils and multiple layers of firmer transition foams. This means heavier body types will find the mattress provides a good amount of bi-directional support and will have a long, useful life.

The thick layer of memory foam near the top gives this mattress a distinctive memory foam feel, but the quilted top somewhat balances it out, meaning there isn’t much resistance when you go to switch positions.

DreamCloud Premier’s most notable features

  • DreamCloud Premier is quite comfortable at around a medium to medium-firm in the firmness scale. We think it’s okay for all sleeping styles even though it’s now softer than in previous generations. It’s not our favorite pick for heavy back and stomach sleepers, but we think it will be a nice side and combo sleeper option.
  • The mattress’s cover uses cashmere, rayon, and polyester, making it super soft to the touch and giving it a premium look.

Why we picked this bed

Overall, this mattress has a lot to offer, especially if you’re open to trying a bed from a newer brand. It’s comfortable, supportive, durable, and responsive. We really like the DreamCloud mattress, particularly for heavier individuals that want a bed that can accommodate combo or side sleepers. Remember, a medium-firm bed will feel softer to bigger adults.

Why Nolah Evolution 15 wins as best bed in a box mattress for heavy people

Sometimes bed-in-a-box mattresses get a bad rep in online forums because they question the legitimacy of a mattress that fits inside of a box, and some online brands aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. However, Nolah Evolution 15 is the brand’s thickest and most durable mattress, and we think it’s perfectly suitable for folks who weigh over 230 lbs.

As the name suggests, this mattress is 15” thick, making it one of the thickest mattresses-in-a-box on the market. However, once it’s fully open and out of the box, it’s an incredibly durable and comfortable bed made with five different layers. Additionally, Nolah has updated the mattress to include improved edge support.

Nolah Evolution 15’s most notable features

  • The top comfort layers are “AirFoamICE,” Nolah’s proprietary foam, which helps draw heat from the body. The Nolah Evolution 15 mattress also sports a breathable organic cotton cover that aids cooling.
  • It also has a Euro-top, which gives it an extra-plush, luxurious feel and look. Thanks to that fluffy pillow top, this bed will provide a soft, responsive, cushiony feel that we really love.
  • Nolah offers three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We think the Plush model is a medium-soft on our firmness scale, and we find the Luxury Firm mattress to land smack dab in the center, around a medium on the firmness scale. Lastly, the Firm model is on the firmer side, about a medium-firm on the scale.

Why we picked this bed

If you’re a heavy side sleeper looking for a thick, hotel-luxury mattress, Nolah Evolution 15 is a great pick. Not only does the brand offer easy boxed delivery and three different firmness options, but it’s also a quality mattress that’ll stand the test of time. They even have a lifetime limited warranty to back the bed, meaning they really are confident about its quality. Not to mention, it’s ultra-comfortable and feels like you’re lying on a fluffy cloud.

Why Avocado wins as the best natural and organic mattress for heavy sleepers

For folks with an inclination towards eco-friendly products and those who suffer from allergies, a natural and organic mattress like Avocado may be beneficial for your sleep and your health. Avocado’s latex foam, cotton, and wool are certified organic, meaning it’s made with 95% organic materials and free of harmful chemicals. It’s also hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, so it’s impervious to household allergens like dander, mildew, and mold.

Aside from its health benefits, Avocado is a supportive hybrid mattress with an 8” thick pocketed coil support layer and organic Dunlop latex foam comfort layer. Though, we suggest you opt for their pillow-top, which takes the mattress from 11” to 13” thick. It also softens up the bed and makes it feel more like a medium-firm. Though, for folks over 230 lbs, it will feel more like a medium to medium-firm, ideal for just about any sleeper position from side, back, stomach to combo.

Avocado’s most notable features

  • The feel of this mattress is basically the exact opposite of memory foam. It’s breathable, really bouncy, and feels somewhat sponge-like. It also has a lot of extra benefits you can’t find in memory foam or poly foam beds, so we see it being worth it for a lot of people!
  • This bed smells nice, like a morning in the farmers market, thanks to its U.S. sourced organic cotton cover. It is button-tufted by hand, which adds to that organic look and feel.
  • The Dunlop latex is sustainably harvested from rubber trees, and the wool is sourced from a cooperative in India.
Avocado Latex Mattress Review Back Sleeper Example
We think this mattress will be best suited for back and stomach sleepers

Why we picked this bed

We like to include natural and organic products on our lists, and Avocado is one of the best. Its thick, 8” pocketed coil layer is extra supportive and durable. At the same time, the firm latex foam only reinforces that sentiment. This makes it an ideal mattress for heavy sleepers, especially when adding the extra 2” with the pillow-top. And, of course, you can sleep well knowing your bed is made with organic, sustainably sourced materials. A queen-size Avocado will retail around $1,500, but with the pillow-top, it’s about $1,900. It’s a little pricey, but we think many environmentally friendly shoppers will see its value.

How To Find The Best Mattress For Heavy People

Before you purchase the mattress of your dreams, you should consider that the best mattress for large people should fulfill a few qualifications. If the mattress you have your eyes on doesn’t check these boxes, it’s time to keep shopping!

  • 1. Durability

A good mattress can last for a decade if you’re lucky, assuming you rotate it every six months. However, some mattresses will sag much sooner with a heavier than average body type. Is your mattress designed to stand the test of time for people in your weight range? Durability means more comfort, back support, and a quieter sleep experience for a longer period of time. Usually, we use hybrid beds as good examples of durable mattresses or thick foam beds like Loom and Leaf.

  • 2. Support

Support is by far the most important thing to check for when you’re looking for the best mattress for heavy people. In general, larger sleepers should be looking for either a hybrid or an innerspring mattress. In some cases, a very dense all-foam bed will also offer adequate support. Having good support is particularly important because it prevents you from waking up with lower back pain, hip pain, or neck and shoulder pain each day.

  • 3. Thickness

The thickest mattresses are about 14″ to 15”, and thick mattresses are great for big and tall sleepers. Thicker mattresses often have stronger layers and will withstand lots of sleep without sagging or drooping. Pay special attention to the thickness of individual layers. If you want a hybrid, look for a mattress with a thicker layer of innerspring coils than memory foam.

  • 4. Firmness

Softness and firmness refer to the Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) of a mattress. ILD lets you know how easy it is to make an indentation with a certain amount of pressure. In general, 0-25 ILD is soft, 25-30 is medium, and 30+ is firm. Having said that, the heavier you are, the softer the bed will generally feel to you, and the quicker you’ll soften up the bed. Tall and large sleepers may want to stick to a firmer mattress for long-term comfort.

  • 5. Layers

    Memory Foam

Very common. It can be supportive, durable, and yet still offer pressure relief. The only thing is that it may leave you feeling stuck in the bed, and most will heat up if it isn’t designed with cooling technology. If you sleep hot but like memory foam, you should look for a gel memory foam bed or one that has a phase change material in the cover.

    Latex Foam

More bouncy and responsive than memory foam. It also stays cooler at night. Some people don’t love it because it can feel a little sponge-like.

    Other Foams

It could be a proprietary foam or polyurethane foam. You should judge these on a case-by-case basis.

    Air

Usually adjustable, but durability could be a concern.

    Gel-like Materials

Like the material inside Purple Mattress, it’s great for airflow and keeping you cool, but the thickness will determine how supportive they are.

For large people, there is no single best type of comfort material. If you like more of a sink-in sensation, memory foam might be your favorite. But if you like a responsive/springy type feeling, latex foam or even Hyper-Elastic Polymer might intrigue you. Just because you’re overweight or big and tall doesn’t mean you have only one type of comfort material from which to choose.

  • 6. Temperature regulation

Sleep hot? A number of the best mattresses for heavy people have cooling properties. Natural elements, for example, including copper, can wick heat away from your body and actively cool you down throughout the night. If you are concerned about getting too warm, look for a temperature-neutral or cooling mattress.

  • 7. Sleeping position

According to our in-house Sleep Study, which gathered thousands of responses, about 69% of people are side sleepers. For big and tall side sleepers, it’s all about finding a balance of firmness and contouring. The best mattress for heavy side sleepers will likely be in the medium-firm or medium range. Beds that come to mind here are Saatva, WinkBed, and Helix. Plus-size sleepers with back pain will appreciate an extra firm bed, while anyone with shoulder pain may want to consider softer models.

According to the same research referenced above, the remaining 31% of people are basically split between back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Over 90% of people report that they rotate sleeping positions at night. Back and stomach sleepers are better off with a strictly firm bed to avoid hip and neck compression.

  • 8. Sleep partners

Edge support and motion transfer are specifically important to couples. Edge support is how well the mattress keeps its shape along the perimeter. If it compresses excessively, you will probably get a roll-off sensation that’s annoying and uncomfortable. Generally, you tend to get better support on coil mattresses than on all-foam beds.

Couples will also rely on motion transfer, which refers to how well the mattress deadens motion. If you (or your partner) are active in your sleep, you’ll want to seek out a bed that’s at least decent at limiting motion transfer. Innersprings tend to be the worst here, but pocketed coils rate pretty well in this department. All-foam generally is the best for motion isolation, although it’s not the best mattress for big and tall people.

  • 9. Foundation

You should make sure that your mattress foundation can handle your weight plus the bed.

From there, you should ensure that it’s (a) compatible with your mattress and (b) recommended by the bed’s manufacturer. We suggest looking into a box spring, a proper foundation, or a metal slatted bed frame. Wood bed frames might work, but metal will be a lot more durable. In either case, please make sure that the foundation is rigid and has no flex to it. It should be as strong and durable as the floor.

If you don’t select the right kind of foundation, it could void the mattress warranty. So, for all you big guys and gals out there, make sure to check and re-check your mattress foundation.

What Type of Mattress Is Best for Heavy People?

When searching through the best mattresses for heavy people, there are various different kinds you’ll see come up –– innerspring, hybrid, and memory foam. We generally recommend heavier people stick with an innerspring or hybrid mattress over a memory foam bed. All foam beds just don’t have the support heavier folks need.

Innerspring beds

Innerspring mattresses are the more traditional option, made from a large system of interconnected coils. They move together, flex together, and support together. They also allow for excellent airflow. A foundation of interwoven steel springs will naturally be more durable than foam. On the downside, they are not great at deadening movement and can be noisy, so this might not be the best option for couples.

Popular innerspring mattresses:

Memory foam beds

Many people are huge fans of memory foam beds –– and it’s not hard to see why. If you live with chronic pain or pressure points when you lay on your bed, memory foam can provide significant relief. Not all memory foam beds feel the same, some of them have a nice, light feel while others have a slow, dense memory foam feel. Thankfully, there are so many beds out there you’ll be able to find one that suits your needs and has the feel you like.

We generally don’t recommend all-foam memory foam mattresses for people who weigh over the 230 lbs range, you probably need the support of an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

Best memory foam beds:

Hybrid beds

A hybrid mattress with pocketed coils has a series of steel coils that are individually wrapped and only lightly connected. They flex and compress separately but still provide great support. However, with pocketed coils, it’s common to find micro-coils, which are only a few inches tall and therefore less supportive than 7.5” pocketed coils. You should stay away from micro-coils, especially if you’re a self-described fat person and look for coils in the 5″-8” range. Pocketed coils also have the added advantage of limiting motion transfer. With innerspring, the whole system sort of compresses and moves together. With pocketed coils, the compression on one part of the bed doesn’t necessarily transfer to the other side. For this reason, we say pocketed coil mattresses are preferable for couples, especially for anyone that’s a light sleeper.

We like hybrid beds for heavy people, because they strike a nice balance between the support of an innerspring bed and the pressure relief that you get from memory foam. Yes, a heavier person will sink down into the foam quicker, but the coil foundation will make sure they get the support they need.

Best hybrid beds:

Innovative technology beds

We know what you’re thinking, what the heck are innovative technology beds? Put simply, it’s unique or special constructions that are specific to brands. For example, Leesa and Brooklyn Bedding have their own viscoelastic foam blends that you can only find in their beds.

Purple is probably one of the most popular brands that fall under the innovative technology bed category. The proprietary hyper-elastic polymer that is found in Purple beds isn’t right for everyone, but if you like a unique, gel-like feel, then try purple.

Best innovative technology beds:

Add A Mattress Topper To Help With Comfort

  • Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper

Tuft & Needle earns our Editor’s pick for mattress toppers. The company sells a comfortable 2″ soft foam topper at an affordable price. The topper is an alternative to memory foam and has medium-soft firmness.

  • Layla Mattress Topper

This memory foam topper is comfortable, cooling, and can be paired with a Layla mattress or any other brand for that matter. It’s great for anyone who needs ample support but also wants to soften up their bed.

  • Casper Mattress Topper

If you need a plush mattress topper, Casper may be the way to go. The latex foam topper has three layers, and we rate it as the most comfortable option on the market right now. The second layer has temperature regulation properties, wicking heat and moisture away from your body.

How We Test The Mattresses

My Slumber Yard has been around since the beginning of the bed in a box craze. Our team has personally tested over 175 mattresses so far, and we keep more than 150 beds in our office so we can compare them (and take afternoon naps).

When testing mattresses, we evaluate the following factors:

  • Construction: We cut mattresses open to see what’s inside and how it’s made.
  • Feel: We check if it has a stuck-in-the-mud memory foam feel, or if it’s more of a neutral foam or a plush pillow top, etc.
  • Firmness: We have our own firmness scale and evaluate how that may vary depending on your body and sleeper type.
  • Pressure relief: We test what’s the sweet spot for different body and sleeper types.
  • Support and how that changes by body/sleeper type
  • Edge Support: This is important for couples who share a bed. Would you roll out of bed or can you sleep confidently close to the edges?
  • Motion Isolation: We use the water glass test to see how the bed fares with motion transfer. This is another important factor for couples who don’t want to wake up when they move.
  • Temperature Regulation: We use a temperature gun to evaluate if the bed warms up, stays neutral or actively cools while sleeping.
  • Noise: This could be an issue in beds with coils or innerspring.
  • Off-Gassing: Some beds could have a smell for a few weeks after unpacking, and we try to warn you about it.
  • Company policies: We also take into account policies such as shipping, returns, trial period and warranty.
  • Value: We look at a bed’s price in the context of what it offers in terms of features and quality of materials and construction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best type of mattress for heavy people?

In general, heavy people will need a highly supportive coil mattress.

What is best for heavy side sleepers?

There are a few mattresses that are specifically made for heavy people. Some that come to mind for side sleepers, in particular, are WinkBed Plus, Helix Plus, and Saatva HD.

Do mattresses have a weight limit?

Most conventional mattresses are made to handle about 250 pounds on each side of the bed, or a 500 total weight limit. Some specifically designed for heavier people have higher weight limits. For example, the Helix Plus says it can support two 500 lbs sleepers.

What thickness of mattress is best for heavier sleepers?

We recommend a mattress thickness of at least 12 inches, ideally 14 inches. The Nolah Evolution 15 and WinkBeds have the thickest mattresses in the market at 15″ tall.

What is the best mattress for a 300-pound person?

The Saatva HD is probably one of the best mattresses for a 300-pound sleeper. It is designed to handle larger sleepers and keep people up to 500 pounds comfortable on their own side of the bed.

Do memory foam mattresses have a weight limit?

It depends on what other materials your bed is made with. If it’s an all-foam memory foam mattress like Nectar, we wouldn’t suggest it to anyone over 250 lbs. Hybrid memory foam mattresses, like a few of the ones mentioned on our list, have a weight limit of 500 lbs+.
