Before we get into the details of the post, here are the primary differences between these two online mattresses.

If you like the feel of memory foam, then chances are you’ll like the Bear mattress. However, it’s important to note Bear made some minor changes to the bed in 2018. Previously, the Bear mattress had a firm, dense memory foam feel. The new version is much softer and not quite as dense. It’s now a lighter, more airy memory foam feel, which a lot of people prefer.
As you lay down on the bed, you sink into the top layers a little and you can start feel the memory foam conform to your body’s shape. Overall, the bed is very soft and comfortable. In fact, Slumber Yard team member Jeff actually slept on the Bear mattress for awhile because he liked it so much.
The big standout feature of the Bear mattress is its Celliant cover. Celliant is a FDA recognized wellness material. It’s supposed help promote blood flow, faster recovery, and increase energy. As such, the bed is marketed heavily towards people with active lifestyles. In fact, the Bear mattress even made our list of the Best Mattresses For Athletes.
This is pretty straightforward. The Bear mattress is simply cheaper than the Original Purple and by a good amount. For example, if you go by the MSRPs, a queen size Bear is about $100 less than a queen size Purple.
Plus, Bear is more aggressive when it comes to coupon codes and promo codes. You can usually find the bed on discount. Check the box on the right hand side of the screen to see what promotion the company is currently running.
Although Purple doesn’t often run sales, they will almost always throw in a free gift (pillow, sheets, mattress protector) with each mattress purchase. Check Purple.com to see what gift they’re currently offering.

This is what makes Purple beds so special. All Purple mattresses use the company’s patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is not a foam. It’s actually more of a gel or silicone-like material. It’s extremely soft, flexible, and responsive.
This top layer gives the Purple beds a very unique, gel-like feel. When you lay down on the bed, you can feel the polymer material beneath you folding, compressing, and conforming to your body’s shape. I have to admit, it’s a little weird at first, but we’ve found most people end up really liking the feel of it after a few nights.

While we think the Bear mattress is best for side and combo sleepers, we think the Original Purple is ideal for all types of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself a back, stomach, or side sleeper.
As we mentioned above, the special polymer top layer does a great job of conforming to your body’s shape. It cradles your hips and shoulders nicely when you’re on your side.
However, what makes the Hyper-Elastic Polymer truly special is that it’s also very supportive. It’s one of the few bedding materials out there that offers the best of both worlds (pressure relief and support). As such, back and stomach sleepers will also feel as if the areas under their lower back and trunk are being properly supported.
If you’re a heavier person (250+ lb), we’d recommend checking out the Purple.2, Purple.3, and Purple.4 mattresses. Those models use Hyper-Elastic Polymer in addition to coils, which tend to be more ideal for big folks.
Although we don’t like to throw the term “cool” around a lot, we do think the Original Purple has the edge over Bear when it comes to temperature regulation. The OG Purple gets the nod here for two primary reasons.
First, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is naturally a temperature neutral material. It doesn’t retain and radiate heat the way foam does. So that’s point number one.
Second, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer top layer is laid out in a grid design. This creates tons of columns and rows of tiny polymer squares, which allows air to flow freely near the top of the bed.
Given these two factors, we think the Original Purple is a great choice for people that tend to heat up at night. In fact, Purple even made our list of the Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers.
Congratulations, you’ve reached the end of this comparison. Hopefully, it’s been helpful. If you’re still struggling with the decision between Purple and Bear, ask yourself a few questions.
First, how much are you willing to spend? If you’re on a tight budget, Bear is the clear winner. Not only do their beds have lower MSRPs, but the company is also much more aggressive with sales and discounts.
Next, are you a hot sleeper? If so, Purple wins. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer top layer allows for a lot of airflow near the top of the mattress.
Lastly, which type of feel do you prefer? If you like memory foam, Bear wins. If you don’t or you just want to try something different, Purple is the clear choice.
If you’ve it made it this far, you now understand the major differences between these two beds. However, it’s also important to understand the areas in which these two beds overlap.
Bear and Purple are both great choices for primary side sleepers. The two beds provide ample pressure relief.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer top layer on the Original Purple is soft and does a good job of cradling your pressure points. Likewise, the top layer of gel memory foam on the Bear mattress conforms and wraps your shoulders and hips extremely well.
While we think Bear and the Original Purple are great for petite and medium size individuals, we just don’t think these two beds are the best options for heavy people (250+ lb).
We generally steer big folks towards beds that contain coils or innerspring units. These types of beds tend to be more durable and offer more support than all-foam beds.
Coils offer what we call bi-directional support. That means the coils compress when you lay down on the bed, but also push back against pressure. As such, beds with coils are just better equipped to support the extra pressure heavy people exert on a bed.

Both Bear and the Original Purple perform well in terms of motion isolation. Both beds passed our tests easily. We noticed very little motion that was transferred from one side of the bed to the other.
This is an important consideration for couples. A bed with good motion isolation means you won’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements. No one wants to be woken up every time their partner switches sleeping positions or gets up to go to the bathroom. That can lead to a restless night of sleep.
While both beds do a good job with motion isolation, they’re not so hot when it comes to edge support, which is another important topic for couples.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re not terrible, but they’re not the best beds we’ve ever tested in this department either. With both beds, as you roll over towards the edge, you’ll notice a bit of compression and get a little of that roll-off sensation.
RELATED: Best Beds For Couples
This is especially important for couples who share a smaller size mattress, like a full or queen. A bed with good edge support means there is more useful surface area for partners to spread and get comfortable. With Bear and Purple, you’ll probably be fine, but you also might want to think about ordering a size up for a little extra room.
It’s important to note that the edge support on the Purple 2, 3, and 4 mattresses is much improved, so if this is a big deal for you and your partner, you’ll definitely want to check out those beds.
The Original Purple mattress is super responsive thanks to its special top layer. However, the Bear mattress is also surprisingly responsive, which you wouldn’t expect given its memory foam top layer.
What we mean by responsive is that the beds snap back to position very quickly after pressure is released. This is important for active sleepers who move around a lot during the night. Typically, these types of sleepers will find it much easier to switch between positions on responsive mattresses. In other words, you won’t feel like you’re “stuck in the mud” on either of these beds.
You may think that shopping for a new mattress online is a bit intimidating. You’re probably used to visiting your local mattress store and testing out each bed you’re considering (albeit for 20 seconds at a time). Well, I have good news for you—online mattress companies offer very friendly customer policies. What do I mean by that? Let’s start with Bear.
First, the Bear mattress ships for free and arrives at your doorstep rolled up and compressed in a box (hence the term bed-in-a-box). From there, you’ll want to move the box to your desired room and then unroll the mattress onto your bed frame or foundation. Make sure to let the mattress breathe for about 24-72 hours before sleeping on it.
Once the mattress arrives, Bear offers a 100-night risk-free trial period. This is how these online mattress companies get around not having thousands of retail locations where you can test their beds. Instead of 20 seconds, they’re giving you three months and some change to test the bed.
If, after 30 nights of sleeping on the bed, you decide the Bear mattress is not for you, no worries, just contact customer support and they’ll take of you. They’ll arrange for a third party company to come pick up the mattress from your home for free. From there, just provide Bear proof that the bed has indeed been picked up and they’ll issue you a full refund. See? I told it was risk-free, unless you count the interest you could have earned on the money sitting in your savings account. Bear also backs their mattress with a 10-year warranty. You can read more about it on the company’s website.
Purple is very similar to Bear in that they offer free shipping, free returns, a 100-night risk-free trial period, and a 10-year warranty. Really, the only difference is that the Original Purple mattress does not arrive compressed in a box. Instead, it arrives rolled up in a protective bag.
In case you were wondering, all the polices we just reviewed are pretty standard for the bed-in-a-box industry. That’s what you’ll get with most online mattress brands. Buying a mattress online isn’t so scary, now is it?
