Casper vs. Purple Mattress Overview
Casper and Purple are both great mattresses, chosen as two of the best beds in a box, most comfortable mattresses, and overall best mattresses you can buy, but you will probably like one more than the other. If you want to try something new, Purple’s unique feel might get you excited for bed every night. If you love a more traditional feel, Casper will give you the support you want.
If you’re a straight-to-the-point kind of person, the differences between Casper and Purple can be boiled down to two main points:
- Feel — Casper has a soft neutral-foam feel. Purple beds have a unique, gel-like feel. This point really comes down to your personal preference.
- Temperature Regulation — Purple beds allow for more airflow (thanks to the Hyper-Elastic Polymer top layer) than the original Casper mattress.

Casper vs. Purple Review Video Review
Casper Mattress Review
Casper was one of the early pioneers in the bed-in-a-box industry and has enjoyed tremendous success because of its comfort and quality.

Casper offers several mattresses including (Casper Element, Casper Wave Hybrid, and Casper Original), but we’re going to focus on the flagship model, the original Casper mattress.
Casper Bed Construction & Design
Casper is 11″ and three layers:
- Support layer — The bed starts with a thick layer of support foam on the bottom.
- Transition layer — This is Casper’s Zoned Transition memory foam. It’s a split layer that’s firmer under your hips/trunk (where you need more support) and softer under your shoulders and legs (where you need more pressure relief).
- Comfort layer — Lastly, on top is a layer of proprietary open-cell foam.

Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel
Although the Casper mattress has a layer of memory foam near the top, it has more of a neutral, soft foam feel, meaning you don’t sink into the bed to the point where the mattress is hugging your body. It’s extremely comfortable. You almost can’t help letting out an audible sigh of approval.
In terms of firmness, we think the Casper mattress comes in right around a medium on the firmness scale. It’s accommodating, and we think all types of sleepers (back, side and stomach) will find the mattress provides a good blend of support and comfort.

However, it is an all-foam mattress, so we wouldn’t say this is the best bed for heavy individuals. These types of sleepers will most likely want to go with a bed that contains coils (like the new Purple models or Casper Hybrid), which will provide more bi-directional support, some bounce and overall durability.
Is Casper A Good Mattress For Couples?
Couples often have specific needs for a bed to be comfortable and let both people get a good nights sleep.
Motion Isolation
The mattress does a good job of deadening movement. The bed passed all our tests easily. This means one person won’t be disturbed or affected by the other person’s movements (i.e. a more restful night’s sleep).
Edge Support
The bed also provides decent edge support for an all-foam bed. If you and your partner like to spread out, you won’t feel as if you’re going to roll right off the bed as you approach the edge.
Temperature Regulation
As far as temperature regulation, like a lot of all-foam beds without any special cooling materials, we think the Casper mattress sleeps at a neutral temperature. You won’t wake up sweating, nor will it actively cool you down. If you’re a warm sleeper, you might want to go with one of the Purple beds, which provide great airflow.

All in all, the flagship Casper mattress is a solid bed in a box. It’s hard to find many negatives. Let’s face it—there’s a reason why the company has done so well. Plus, it’s relatively affordable. You can snag a queen size for about $1,100 or around the $1,000 mark with a coupon code.
Casper Mattress Policies
Casper’s buying policies make it easy to feel confident that you’ll love your new mattress or be taken care of if you don’t:

- Returns – If you decide the bed isn’t for you during the trial period, contact Casper customer support to arrange for someone to come to your home free of charge and pick up the mattress. It typically takes around 7-14 days to complete the whole return and refund process.
- Warranty – Casper backs its mattresses with a 10-year warranty.
Other Casper Beds Vs Purple Mattress
Casper Wave vs Purple
The Casper Wave is the company’s most premium option. The Wave Hybrid features the most advanced support system for spinal alignment, making it the best mattress for back pain, hip pain, basically any type of ache or pain, and even scoliosis.
Due to the Zoned Support Max + Gel pods, the mattress provides full-body relief. The top layer of foam reduces heat and increases airflow, making this a great cooling mattress. Because of the gel pods and cooling properties, it’s more like the Purple than the original. If you’re not sure about Purple’s unique feel and want a more traditional mattress with similar benefits, this is a good option. You can directly compare the Casper wave vs original as well.
Casper Nova Hybrid vs Purple
The Casper Nova falls somewhere between the original Casper and the Wave Hybrid in terms of price. It’s a good mattress for those who want that plush layer on top without giving up support.
The Nova Hybrid has three layers of support targeted for spinal alignment. It also has pressure relief under the shoulders and waist. This one doesn’t have any particular features to compare to Purple. This one will come down to if you like the feel of the Casper mattress vs Purple mattress.

Purple Mattress Review
Purple, like Casper, has experienced tremendous success in the online mattress space over the past several years. Purple vs Casper has several unique things to consider.
Purple Mattress Construction & Design
The original Purple mattress has a more traditional bed-in-a-box construction:
- Support layers — It has two dense layers of polyurethane foam on the bottom for support
- Comfort layer — Rather than a layer of memory foam or latex foam on top, Purple uses a 2″ slab of its Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
Purple Bed Feel And Firmness
Purple is unique in that it uses a patented material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer as the top layer in all its beds. This patented material is not a foam. It has more of a gel-like feel, even though it’s technically a type of polymer. It’s extremely stretchy, soft and durable, yet it offers a remarkable amount of support.

We here at the Slumber Yard really like it, but it’s not for everybody. Some people find it a little too weird. The nice thing, though, is that you can order small samples from the company to test it out before you buy.
The polymer material cradles pressure points like your hips and shoulders while also providing the necessary support under your trunk and lower back.
For this reason, we think this mattress is nice for all kinds of sleepers. As one of the best mattresses for side sleepers, side sleepers will find the mattress soft, comfortable and pressure relieving, and stomach and back sleepers will find that the mattress keeps their spine properly aligned at all times. The original Purple is also the most affordable bed in the lineup, so it’s a good choice if you’re on a budget.

Is Purple A Good Mattress For Couples?
Like Casper, we think Purple beds are viable options for couples, as long as both partners like the feel of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
Motion Isolation
Hyper-Elastic Polymer is surprisingly effective at deadening movement.
Edge Support

We like that Purple uses side rails for solid edge support.
Temperature Regulation
Another benefit of Hyper-Elastic Polymer is its cooling and airflow effects. First, it’s a naturally cool or temperature neutral material. Hyper-Elastic Polymer doesn’t retain or trap heat the way a lot of common foams do. Additionally, the polymer is arranged in a grid formation. This creates various columns, rows, and pockets for air to flow freely near the surface of the mattress. As such, the airflow on this bed is good. In fact, Purple made our list for Best Cooling Mattresses. If you’re looking at Purple vs Casper for temperature, Purple is an easy choice.
To conclude, we think very highly of Purple mattresses. We love the benefits that Hyper-Elastic Polymer provides.
Purple Mattress Policies
If you buy a Purple bed vs Casper, you’ll get similar company policies:
- Shipping – Free shipping and free white-glove delivery with Hybrid Premier models.
- Trial period – 100-night risk-free trial.
- Returns – You can return your bed for free during the trial period.
- Warranty – 10-year limited warranty.
So whether you get Casper or Purple mattress, you can return your bed if you find it’s not the best fit for you. If you like it, you’re protected against manufacturing defects.
New Purple 2, 3, and 4 vs Casper
Unlike the original, these new Purple hybrid models incorporate pocketed coils. The coils give the new models extra support, a little bounce and more longevity. As such, we’d recommend heavy people (250+ lb) go with one of the new models.
One factor to consider when choosing a new bed is the bed’s firmness. If you prefer medium firmness, the Purple hybrid mattresses will be a good fit because each of them scores between a medium to firm on our firmness scale. Make sure to check out our Purple mattress comparison for more info on how these mattresses compare.
The big differences in the Purple Hybrid vs Casper Hybrid debate center around design and feel.
