Before we really sink our teeth in, let’s go over a table of contents of sorts. We already mentioned that these are hybrid mattresses, but what are the key areas that will drive a decision one way or the other?
- Price — You’ll notice that both are affordable mattresses, but that BB Signature tends to be a little more affordable than Helix.
- Feel — We cover what the Helix and BB beds actually feel like when you lay on them.

What Makes Helix Sleep Different — Helix Sleep’s entire business model is designed around one observation: we are all different. As such, Helix promotes itself as a semi-custom mattress brand that offers a model for all shapes and types of sleepers. As an example, if you’re a 185 lb back sleeper, they make a firm mattress, but if you’re a side sleeper that needs a plush mattress, they’ve got you covered there as well.
Over the years, Helix Sleep has evolved their messaging from stating that they make custom mattresses to that they make a bed for every type of person. For you that means that you have two options for selecting a Helix mattress:
- Take the Helix Sleep Quiz — This is a short questionnaire on HelixSleep.com that helps match you up with the right mattress for your body type and sleeping style.
- Choose From A List — They now spell out all of the models that they make (i.e. six core models, two specialty, and a luxe lineup)
The bottom line with Helix is that their goal is to make a bed for everyone. To some, that might make the process confusing, but for most it actually simplifies the shopping experience, particularly for those that take the Helix Sleep Quiz.
Six Core Helix Mattress Models
As we noted, Helix has become more transparent about the fact that they don’t make custom mattresses per se, but they make numerous different models for every type of sleeper. You can see a complete list of beds on HelixSleep.com, but here’s a chart that shows the six core models:
For the record, the Helix Midnight mattress is the most popular model, which makes sense since it’s about the same firmness as beds like Puffy or Casper. The whole idea here is that if you know you’re in need a plush mattress, you can pick something like Moonlight or Sunset. Though, if a firm mattress seems more appealing, Dawn is a smarter pick.
Specialty Beds Offered
In addition to the six core beds, the company makes Birch and Helix Plus, which are considered their “specialty beds.” You can think of the Birch mattress as a competitor to My Green Mattress or Avocado, in that it uses coils and latex foam, and has natural/organic branding.
Brooklyn Bedding offers Bloom, the company’s natural and organic mattress. It’s not quite a one-for-one competitor with Birch, but it plays in the same space.
Despite the fact that all Helix Sleep mattresses have coils, for those weighing over 300 lbs, getting a specialty mattress makes a lot of sense. And that’s precisely why the brand created Helix Luxe, a competitor to WinkBed or Big Fig. Interestingly, Helix Plus is designed to support up to two sleepers that each weigh between 300 lbs and 500 lbs.
Brooklyn Bedding also makes Titan, the mattress for heavy people. It’s basically a firmer version of Helix Plus, but intended for the same type of sleeper. You can see the Titan mattress here—it’s a little more affordable than Helix Plus.
As a reminder, even though Helix has all of these different beds, they will line you up with the correct model if you take their sleep quiz. We don’t want you to get overwhelmed with the sheer number of beds they sell. In reality, the entire process is pretty simple, so long as you take the quiz.
What The Beds Feel Like
In general, you’ll notice that Helix and Brooklyn Bedding Signature feels fairly similar, but if you were to lay on one and then the other, you’d notice a difference. Most people won’t have that luxury, so here’s the best we can do in terms of describing the “feel” of the mattresses.
- Helix Sleep — Excluding Birch, most of the beds feel like a soft foam mattress with coils, but some have a little memory foam, giving them more of a sink-in feeling. Midnight, for example, uses memory foam, so you can feel more of that sink-in characteristic. Dawn, however, doesn’t have memory foam, so it will feel a lot more like BB Signature.
- Brooklyn Signature Hybrid — This mattress basically feels like Casper with coils. It has a neutral, soft foam feel without any memory foam. If you can imagine a big slag of soft foam on top of coils, that’s kind of what BB Signature feels like.
It’s somewhat difficult to explain the main difference in feel unless you look at one particular Helix Sleep mattress. As such, let’s take Helix Midnight (pictured above) because that’s their most popular model. You’ll notice that its main comfort foam is actually gel memory foam. It won’t feel like a prototypical memory foam bed, but you will notice that it has memory foam. This can be good or bad depending on your stance on memory foam.

Why You Should Get Brooklyn Signature Hybird— You can think of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress as a fantastic value. Not only is it a comfortable mattress, but it’s offered in three firmness options and is really affordable. This is type of bed you can almost blindly recommend to anyone given its price-to-value ratio, meaning we think the price is reasonable and it’s a quality mattress. Obviously, you can say the same about Helix, but this is just one individual model from Brooklyn Bedding.
The great thing about the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress is that it offers some of the “custom” features of Helix while being incredibly simple to understand. In other words, it’s a “safe pick” for many consumers.
Brooklyn Bedding Is More Affordable
Before we get into the specifics, we’d like to caveat this section noting that prices change all the time for mattresses, particularly during major holidays. As such if you’re looking for the best mattress sales, you might want to hold off shopping until July 4th, Labor Day, etc.
With all of this in mind, generally speaking, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress is more affordable than Helix. Last we checked, in terms of MSRP for the queen mattress, both beds were around $1,000, but that’s not the whole story. After discounts, typically, we see BB Signature and Helix go for around $800 and $900, respectively.
You can check the current deals on BrooklynBedding.com, though you’ll usually see the Signature mattress drop down to about $800. Helix also makes public their promotions, and you can see today’s offers on HelixSleep.com.
Signature Hybrid Mattress Design
It’s important to note that all Helix Sleep mattresses have pocketed coils, as does the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress. As such, they all have plenty of “bounce” and are fairly responsive compared to many all-foam beds. Let’s take a look inside the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress.
Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress has 6″ pocketed coils and measures 10″ thick in total. The standard Helix mattresses have 8″ coils and measure about 12″ thick. Obviously, a difference there, but nothing we think will significantly move the needle for consumers.
Firmness Levels Offered
The Signature Hybrid mattress from Brooklyn Bedding comes in three main firmness options so as to please multiple types of consumers and sleepers.
The first of which is the “Soft” model, which is indeed quite plush. We can only recommend this bed to people that know they want a truly soft mattress—perhaps they have shoulder or hip pain, arthritis, or some other ailment that necessitates a plush sleeping surface. The Moonlight would be the compared mattress from Helix Sleep.
The most popular model is the “Medium” mattress, which is still pretty soft. We consider the “Medium” to be slightly softer than a true medium, meaning it’s a little softer than the Casper mattress. We recommend this model primarily to side sleepers. The closest comparison from Helix is their Sunset mattress.
The “Firm” model is basically a medium-firm and, as a result, is best for stomach and back sleepers. This offers a nice amount of support and firmness, while still having just a little cushioning. You can think of this model as somewhat similar to Helix Twilight.
Which Should You Get—Helix or Brooklyn Bedding?
We aren’t in the business of telling you what to do. Our goal is to lay out the case for both beds and allow you to choose whichever you think is right for you. With that in mind, here’s a summary of what you should be keeping in mind when considering Helix Sleep and Brooklyn Bedding:
