Helix Mattress Quiz

If you’re into the quizzes that tell you which aquatic animal you are or which character from Friends is most like you, you’ll really enjoy the Helix mattress quiz that they promote on their website—it just takes a few minutes to complete.

The Helix Sleep quiz takes less than five minutes to complete

They have nine main mattress models, so the quiz helps you narrow down which bed would be best for you based on your answers. This is a big help for those who are a bit overwhelmed by the countless mattress options available across the internet.

General Construction Of Helix Mattresses

Out of their nine models, six of them are considered to be Helix’s core group and have subtle differences in their constructions. Helix’s other three are still similar, but are a little more specialized, which we will get into shortly. Helix actually offers more than ten models when you add in the Luxe version of their beds. In this post, we’ll be focusing on their standard models, but you can read about their Luxe line in our Helix Luxe review.

The first six mattress models we’ll be discussing are Moonlight, Dusk, Dawn, Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight. Their exact construction will depend on which model you choose, but they’ll each be 12” thick with 8” pocketed coils and 4” of foam. The four different foams that Helix uses in their mattresses are memory foam, polyurethane foam (science talk for neutral foam), Helix Dynamic Foam, and DuraSense Foam (support foam).

Different models use a particular combination of these foams to create end products that will deliver different results. Changing the thickness of the Memory Plus Foam and Helix Dynamic Foam makes the bed more or less supportive based on your specific needs.

The next “special” mattress is the Helix Plus, which has XL coils and higher-density foams, which is ideal for big and tall folks. The variety of models that Helix offers is the primary reason that we put them on our list of the Best Mattresses For Couples & Co-Sleeping.

Helix Primarily Has A Soft Foam Feel

Again, the exact feeling of your mattress will be dictated by the model you choose, but they generally feel like soft neutral foam. Memory foam can be found in several of the Helix models, but it isn’t very prevalent in the overall feel of the beds. Due to their hybrid constructions, they’re supportive, responsive, and durable, but you also get a really some really nice comfort from the top layers.

Helix has options for all types of sleepers

You can choose between a soft, medium, or firm mattress with Helix, so any kind of sleeper can find a mattress they’ll enjoy. If you’re a side sleeper, you may want to lean towards the soft or medium mattress options, and if you’re a back or stomach sleeper, you should consider the firm or medium models.

Memory Foam Bed With A Pillow Top

Unlike Helix, you won’t be finding any coils inside of a Loom & Leaf. The entire 11”-12” thick mattress is constructed with different kinds of foam and a quilted topper made from organic cotton.

The foundation of the mattress is made out of 5.5” of dense poly foam. The next slab of foam is a 2” transition loft pad. We don’t really expect you to know what a loft pad is, though, so all you really need to know is that it’s a transition layer between the support foam and the memory foam on top. Above that transition layer is 2.5” of 5 lb visco-elastic memory foam, and this is where that deep pressure relief and support comes in. The very top layer is a 2” layer of 4 lb gel-swirl memory foam for a soft and comfortable feel.

Loom & Leaf’s all-foam construction

Included in the gel-swirl memory foam layer is a gel panel that’s intended to improve temperature regulation. It’s a laminated sheet of cooling gel that’s between the cover and gel-swirl memory foam. The material is also found in hospital burn units to care for fire victims. Since memory foam mattresses are known to retain heat, this gel is used in the center third of the mattress where heat really accumulates. So we think a Loom & Leaf is a viable option for people who love memory foam, but heat up throughout the night.

Loom & Leaf Organic Cotton Cover

One of the highlight features of the L&L mattress is its organic cotton cover with an extra ⅝” of comfort foam quilted into it. The mattress is encased by a premium soft material that’s organic, so it comes with a calming earthy smell.

We like the look of Loom & Leaf’s organic cotton cover.

It gives the bed such an aesthetically pleasing look, you may not even want to put sheets on it. (You definitely should though, you know, since it’s not machine washable and everything).

What L&L Will Feel Like

With those memory foam layers, it should come as no surprise that the Loom & Leaf mattress has a memory foam feel—but the pillow top is neutral, so the overall feel is very accommodating. Once you lay down, your body will become slightly settled in the top layers of memory foam and the soft foam of the mattress’ cover. It’ll feel padded and comforting while your body gets a good balance of support and pressure relief.

Loom & Leaf is great for back and stomach sleepers.

Loom & Leaf doesn’t offer nearly as many firmness options as Helix does, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Instead of having nine different options with different support profiles and firmness levels, Loom & Leaf offers a Firm mattress or Relaxed Firm model. Some people like having choices, others like the simplicity of getting to choose between just two models. The most popular, which is the Relaxed Firm, falls at a medium-firm, and the Firm lands at a firm on our scale.

If you’re primarily a side sleeper, you should go for the Relaxed Firm so you can get a little more pressure relief. If you’re a petite back sleeper, we also recommend you go for the Relaxed Firm model so it can be supportive, but it won’t feel too firm for you.

If you’re a larger individual who sleeps on their back or stomach, we think you should probably go for the Firm model to get optimal support to keep your spine in alignment.

How Much Should Price Factor Into Your Decision?

Many online mattress brands hover around the $1,000 price point range, give or take a few hundred dollars. A Helix mattress usually retails around $1,000, and a Loom & Leaf will usually cost you about $1,700 (queen size). In the long run, when you’re spending that much money on a mattress, $500-$700 probably won’t be the reason you decide against a mattress.

With that being said, there could be people who are already going out of their comfortable spending range to consider a quality mattress like Helix or Loom & Leaf. So that $500-$700 would make a difference. Especially when you take deals and coupon codes into consideration, Helix usually comes out to be around $500-$700 cheaper. So if you’re extremely price conscious, the Helix mattress may be a better choice for you.

Verdict

If you’ve set your sights on Helix or Loom & Leaf, these are the main questions we think you should be asking yourself to decide which one would fit your needs the most.

  • Do you like memory foam? Loom & Leaf has a dense memory foam feel with a pillow top cover to compliment it.
  • Do you want the ability to choose between several different firmness levels for your mattress? A Helix has over ten different mattress models.
  • Do you like the security of a long warranty? Loom & Leaf offers a longer warranty policy than most online mattress brands.

We do our best here to make sure you get all the information you need before you buy a mattress so you don’t plagued with buyer’s remorse afterwards. We have a ton of other Mattress Comparisons, so we encourage you to check those out if you’re still working on making a decision.
