Lucid Hybrid vs Tuft and Needle Mattress

Before we begin, let me just make it clear that Lucid offers several different mattress models, all of which are priced affordably. They offer all-foam and hybrid beds that range in thickness and material type. You can check out their entire selection of beds on Amazon. In this post, though, we are going to focus exclusively on the Lucid 10″ Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress, which we think is a tremendous value.

Lucid Has A Blended, Memory Foam Feel

Although the Lucid Hybrid mattress uses a 1.5″ slab of memory foam for its top layer, the bed doesn’t have a prototypical memory foam feel. In other words, you don’t immediately sink deep into the mattress and the top layers don’t engulf your body.

Don’t get me wrong, though, you still get a slight bit of that memory foam sensation. The bed is very soft and comfortable and the top layer conforms to your body’s shape a little.

However, with that said, you sleep more on top of the surface and the top layer is more responsive than a lot of other memory foam beds out there. As such, we like to say the bed has more of a mixed or neutral memory foam feel.

As you will find out below, the Tuft & Needle mattress does not contain any memory foam whatsoever. The bed has more of what we call a strict neutral-foam feel. Given this, if you’re a big memory foam fan, we think the Lucid Hybrid is the way to go.

Higher-Quality Construction

Another big area in which the Tuft & Needle and Lucid mattresses differ is in how each bed is constructed. As its name implies, the Lucid Hybrid mattress is comprised of both coils and layers of foam.

For its foundation, the bed uses a 1″ layer of dense support foam and 5.5″ individually encased coils. Together, these layers serve as the primary support structure for the mattress. Rounding out the mattress are two layers of transition foam and the 1.5″ layer of memory foam that we discussed above.

For comparison purposes, the Tuft & Needle mattress is comprised of just two foam layers (a dense support foam and a proprietary foam top layer).

If you look at the constructions of both mattresses together in a vacuum, you have to give Lucid the edge. Generally speaking, coils are considered a higher-end bedding material. Coils tend to be more durable and provide more support than dense poly foams that all-foam beds use for their foundations.

Better For Heavy People

Piggybacking off the last point, we think the Lucid Hybrid mattress is the better option out of the two for large individuals (250+ lb). Big folks exert more force onto a mattress compared to more petite and medium sized individuals. As such, it’s imperative large body types sleep on a mattress that properly supports them.

Now as we mentioned above, coils tend to be more supportive and durable than dense poly foams. Given this, we almost always recommend heavy people go with a mattress that contains coils. Not only are coils more durable, but they also provide what we call bi-directional support, meaning they compress, but also push back up against pressure. This little bit of push-back or resistance is key for support.

To be clear, we’re not saying the Lucid Hybrid mattress is the best option ever for large sleepers, but it’s certainly more ideal than Tuft & Needle. However, if you weigh over 250 lb, it might also be a good idea to check out our list of the Best Beds For Heavy People.

Lucid Is More Affordable

First, it’s important to note both Tuft & Needle and Lucid are quite affordable compared to the average bed-in-a-box. However, with that said, you can typically find the Lucid Hybrid much cheaper than Tuft & Needle.

For example, at the time of this post, you can snag a queen size Lucid Hybrid on Amazon for around $350. A queen size Tuft & Needle goes for around $600.

Tuft & Needle doesn’t really need an introduction, but I’ll make one anyway. The company was one of the early entrants in the bed-in-a-box space and really, along with Casper and Leesa, helped bring the whole concept to the forefront of the bedding industry. However, even from the get-go, Tuft & Needle took a slightly different approach than the other popular bed-in-a-box brands by pricing their mattresses well below the industry average.

Just so you’re aware, T&N does offer another model called the Tuft & Needle Mint. It’s a slightly more premium mattress and is priced a little higher. But let’s talk about the Original Tuft & Needle mattress.

Tuft & Needle Has A Soft, Neutral-Foam Feel

As we alluded to above, the Tuft & Needle mattress has a soft, neutral-foam feel. For the top layer, the bed uses the company’s T&N Adaptive Foam, which is essentially just a soft, proprietary foam. In other words, it doesn’t belong in the memory foam or latex foam family tree.

Instead the T&N Adaptive foam sort of takes characteristics from both types of foam. It’s soft and comfortable like memory foam, but it’s more responsive and doesn’t really contour to your body’s shape at all, which is more like latex foam.

It’s important to note there’s no winner or loser when it comes to feel. Everyone has different preferences. Some people prefer the conforming sensation memory foam provides and some people dislike that feeling. It really just depends.

Overall, we’d say if you like memory foam, go with the Lucid Hybrid, but if you don’t like the feel of memory foam, Tuft & Needle is the safer choice.

Longer Trial Period

We mentioned this above, but thought it was worth mentioning again. The Tuft & Needle mattress comes with a 100-night risk-free trial period. This is 70 days longer than the 30 day de facto trial period you get with the Lucid Hybrid if you buy it through Amazon. Sometimes it can take 15-45 days to break in and get used to a new mattress, so it’s nice Tuft & Needle gives you a little more flexibility, especially if you’re an indecisive consumer.

Made In The USA

This is another small point, but I know it matters to some people. Tuft & Needle is owned by the well-known bedding company Serta Simmons and all their beds are manufactured in the USA. Lucid beds, on the other hand, are manufactured overseas.

However, it’s worth pointing out that Lucid mattresses are still manufactured with CertiPUR certified foams, meaning they meet the highest quality standards and are free from any harmful chemicals or toxins. As such, we don’t think it’s really a big deal at the end of the day.

What Lucid And Tuft And Needle Have In Common

Above we described how each of the beds differ, but they also share a few similarities.

Both Beds Accommodate All Sleeper Types

Overall, we think both beds land around a medium on our soft-to-firm scale. Both mattresses find a fairly nice balance between support and pressure relief.

We think both beds are accommodating for all types of sleeping positions. It doesn’t matter whether you spend the majority of the night on your side, back, or stomach.

Plus, both beds are also quite responsive, meaning the top layers pop back to position fairly quickly after pressure is released. This is nice for combination sleepers who rotate between positions frequently. Generally, these type of sleepers prefer responsive beds like the Tuft & Needle and Lucid Hybrid that don’t have any sort of that stuck-in-the-mud sensation.

Both Mattresses Sleep Temperature Neutral

When it comes to temperature regulation, we’d say both mattresses sleep temperature neutral. In other words, you won’t warm up on either of these beds, but they also won’t actively cool you down throughout the night.

In this case, we think external factors will play more of a critical role in how warm or cool you sleep. For example, factors like what temperature you have your air conditioner set at, what type of sheets and comforter you’re using, and what climate you live in will affect your sleeping temperature more so than the actual beds.

Factors For Couples

We think both the Lucid Hybrid and Tuft & Needle mattresses are viable options for couples. We judge this by testing edge support and motion isolation.

Both beds deaden movement pretty well. In our tests, we noticed very little motion that was transferred from one side of the bed to the other.

This is important for people who share a mattress with an active sleeper (i.e. someone who moves around a lot). The better a bed is at limiting motion transfer, the less you’ll be disturbed by your partner’s movements, which likely means you’ll get a better night of sleep.

Next, both mattresses also provide fairly solid edge support. As you approach the perimeter of the bed, you still feel supported and never feel as if you’re going to roll right off the edge.

Edge support is especially important for couples who sleep on a smaller size mattress, like a full or queen. Good edge support means there is more useful surface area for both partners to spread out. Hey, not every couple likes to cuddle (no judgments here).

Tuft & Needle vs Lucid Review Verdict

Look, we can see why Tuft & Needle has become so popular and why it has such positive ratings on Amazon. At the end of the day, it’s a solid bed that’s comfortable and accommodates all sleeper types.

However, after testing both mattresses and taking into consideration price, we have to give the edge to the Lucid Hybrid. It just checks all the boxes. It’s cheaper, it will likely be more durable, it’s preferable for larger body types and it too is comfortable and accommodates all sleeping positions.
