It’s important to note that for this comparison we are discussing Nest Sparrow (formerly known as the Alexander Signature) and Tuft & Needle Original, both of which are the most popular models from the respective brands. We thought about comparing their other beds, but we figured it made more sense to match the comparison up with what people are actually searching for.
For instance, when a consumer is searching for Nest Bedding, they are most often looking for the Sparrow mattress. Same goes for Tuft & Needle—most people are looking for the original bed.
Before we delve into the reasons to purchase from one brand or the other, let’s go over some common ground for Nest Bedding and Tuft & Needle.
- Free Shipping — Regardless of which mattress you buy from Nest Bedding or Tuft & Needle, shipping will be free. Both brands ship via UPS or FedEx, and delivery typically takes between four and seven business days.
- Bed In A Box — Both beds will show up to your house in a box. It’s actually a surprisingly small box considering it could contain a king or California king mattress.
- Unboxing & Setup — In large part, getting your new mattress ready to go is the same for Nest Bedding and Tuft & Needle. You just need to remove the box and plastic wrapping and the bed will expand almost immediately. It’s a really neat process to watch.
- Trial Period — Both companies allow you to vet your new bed for 100 nights. If at any point you decide that you don’t want the bed, NB and TN offer you totally free returns. That’s right, risk-free trial periods and a 100% refund option.
Just to reiterate again, this comparison focuses on NB Alexander Hybrid, a bed with coils, and T&N Original, an all-foam mattress. There is a Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress that you might want to check out, but it’s just not what most people are looking for when they search the T&N brand name. We just want you to be aware that this isn’t exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, but we’ll do our best nonetheless.

Why Sparrow Should Be Your Next Mattress — To be quite honest, this is one of the nicest mattresses that you can buy online. It’s in the luxury tier—you can both see and feel that when you have it at your house. It’s just on another level. In this section we will discuss the specific reasons why we think you should buy NB Alexander Hybrid.

Construction — At a high level, this is a pillow top mattress. It’s more complicated than that, but if you are looking for a pillow top mattress, NB Alexander Hybrid is the obvious choice over T&N.
The bed starts with pocketed coils for support and transitions up to various comfort foams. The main selling point, however, is the fluffy and airy pillow top, which makes the mattress abnormally comfortable. You can see the exact construction on Nest Bedding’s website.

The fact the bed has coils means that it’s a better mattress for heavy and obese people than the original Tuft and Needle mattress. If you are indeed over the 230 lb threshold, we’d recommend you look into Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid Luxury Firm.
Firmness — The bed is available in three firmness profiles (Plush, Medium, Luxury Firm) as well as split firmness levels for couples that want something completely different.
We’d recommend that side sleeper stick with the Medium option. It’s our favorite and is the most popular version. If, however, you’re petite or need the most pressure relief possible, the Plush version might be worth your consideration.

The Luxury Firm option is reserved for back and stomach sleepers, but just know that it’s not an extra firm mattress. We’d say that it’s more in the medium-firm range, which means it should work for back and stomach sleepers as well as combination sleepers that occasionally roll to their side.
Great Mattress For Couples — We mentioned the split firmness options above, but let’s expand on that since it’s such an important differentiator for Nest Bedding. Firstly, off the top of my head, I’m only aware of one other brand that offers split-firmness beds (that being Helix Sleep). For couples with different preferences, Nest Bedding makes a heck of a lot of sense because you can get two different firmness profiles on the same bed.
You can see all of of the firmness combinations on Nest Bedding’s website, but suffice it to say that they make a combination for most eventualities. As an example, if you’re a side sleeper and your partner is a strict back sleeper, they’ve got you covered.

Why You Should Buy Tuft & Needle — The main reason to get Tuft & Needle is that you get a nice mattress for not much dinero. Among the large mattress brands, not many offer a $895 queen mattress. If you simply want a comfortable foam bed, Tuft & Needle will do the trick. Apparently only about 5% of people end up returning the mattress.

Pricing For The Bed — For the queen size T&N mattress, the MSRP is around $900 before any promotions. On the off-chance that you can find a mattress coupon code, T&N will likely be in the $870 range, but they don’t frequently offer discounts on this bed because it’s affordable as is.
You can check T&N’s website for discounts today, but we expect that, at most, you’ll see a bundle, not an actual cash discount. Even so, Tuft & Needle is about half the price of Nest Bedding. It’s just a comparison of a budget-tier bed and a luxury-tier bed.
As for Nest Bedding, the Alexander Hybrid is around $1,600 for the queen. For a premium hybrid mattress, that’s not a bad price at all. There are several luxury mattreses that are $1,600 after-discount. Lucky for you, though, Nest does offer discounts on this particular bed in the $200 off range. You can visit NestBedding.com for their current promotions.
Feel Of T&N — If you can imagine a regular soft foam, that’s essentially what Tuft and Needle feels like. We sometimes say that it doesn’t have a signature feel, per se, because it just feels like a standard soft foam. And that’s part of the reason so many people find it to be a suitable mattress—it’s accommodating and comfortable.
Interestingly, the bed is comprised of only two layers: a dense support foam and a softer, cushioning layer on top. They call that top layer T&N Adaptive Foam. It’s essentially an upgraded poly foam with a little graphite infused to help regulate your sleeping temperature.

Tuft & Needle has such a neutral and unassuming feel that we are not at all surprised to hear about 95% of consumers supposedly keep the bed. That means, according to T&N, only about 5% of people end up returning the bed. If you know what you’re getting into, it’s probably the perfect mattress. Again, just a comfy foam bed.
Which Bed Should You Get?
The way we see it, this comparison comes down to your preferences on a few things:
- Do you prefer a pillow top or soft foam feel?
- What’s your budget for the new mattress?
- Are you interested in an ultra plush mattress or one that’s on the firmer end of the spectrum? Or would you just prefer something in the middle?
- Do you have any interest in a split-firmness mattress?
- Do you weigh more than 230 lbs?
The answer to the aforementioned questions will determine whether you go with Tuft and Needle or Nest Bedding. Hopefully you found the comparison helpful.
