Casper Mattress vs. Tuft & Needle Overview
Tuft & Needle and the original Casper are alike in a lot of ways. They’re both all-foam beds that have similar feels and perform well in almost all categories, and both companies have reputations for making high-quality beds. If you’re choosing Tuft & Needle vs Casper, it all comes down to your preference rather than quality or features for the most part.
Two factors can explain the primary differences between these two beds:
- Price — Tuft & Needle is more affordable than the Original Casper.
- Side sleepers — The original Casper mattress is more accommodating for people that spend a lot of time on their side.

Casper Mattress Review
Casper has a few varieties, so this review will focus on the original Casper.
Casper Mattress Design And Construction
The original Casper mattress has three layers:
- Support layer — The Casper mattress starts with a dense layer of support foam on the bottom.
- Zoned layer — Casper calls this layer its Zoned Support Foam. This layer is split into thirds so the portions where you need more pressure relief (under your shoulders and legs) are softer, while the areas where you need more support (under your trunk and lower back) are firmer.
- Comfort layer — On top of the Zoned Support Foam is a layer of memory foam and then a layer of open-cell proprietary foam. Like Tuft & Needle, the proprietary foam on top gives the mattress more of a soft neutral-foam feel, as opposed to a memory foam feel.

Casper Mattress Feel & Firmness
The Casper bed doesn’t contour or hug your body the way true memory foam does. We like that. We think Casper is an extremely comfortable bed.
In terms of firmness, we’d say the Casper mattress comes in around a medium on the firmness scale. It’s softer and more accommodating than the Tuft & Needle right out of the box. The bed finds a balance between comfort, pressure relief and support.
As such, we think all types of sleepers will enjoy this bed.

Casper is temperature neutral. You won’t heat up and start sweating on either bed, but it also won’t actively keep you cool. If you’re a hot sleeper and concerned about staying cool, we’d recommend checking out our Best Cooling Mattresses list.
Is Casper A Good Mattress For Couples?
Casper shouldn’t have a problem with edge support and motion isolation, two major components if you’re sharing a bed with someone.
Edge Support

You won’t feel like you’re going to roll off the bed if you get close to the edge.
Motion Transfer
All-foam beds generally do a good job of limiting cross-bed motion, so Casper does fine in this category.

Casper Element vs. Tuft And Needle
Casper Element is an uber-affordable mattress that’s great for college students, guest rooms and kids. Casper Element is a 10″ thick mattress that features three layers of foam. It’s slightly thicker than Tuft and Needle.
Casper Element and T&N are around the same price, but there are subtle differences that might get you to purchase one over the other. We don’t have a winner because we consider them to be so comparable.
We might, however, rate Casper Element a little firmer than Tuft & Needle. Therefore, for strict side sleepers, our preference between the two would likely be Tuft & Needle.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review
Tuft & Needle Mattress Design & Construction
How can Tuft & Needle afford to price its bed that way? The reason probably has to do with the construction and cost of materials. Tuft & Needle has two layers:
- Support layer — There’s a dense layer of support foam on the bottom.
- Comfort layer — The bed has a softer proprietary (called T&N Adaptive Foam) on top.

Feel And Firmness
The Tuft & Needle mattress is firmer than the Casper mattress right out of the box, probably because Casper uses two transition layers from bottom to top, whereas Tuft & Needle does not.
Like Casper, Tuft & Needle is a temperature-neutral bed.
Is Tuft & Needle A Good Mattress For Couples?
Edge Support
It’s not the best edge support ever, but you should be fine on a larger bed.
Motion Isolation
It’s not the best for especially light sleepers, but it still does a decent job.

Tuft & Needle Mint vs. Casper
Tuft & Needle Mint is the premium, upgraded foam mattress from T&N. It’s around the same price as Casper but is softer. They retail for a similar price, so it’s no wonder why people want to know who wins when discussing Tuft and Needle Mint vs. Casper.
We think Casper is a little more accommodating for stomach and back sleepers, while Tuft & Needle Mint is probably better for side sleepers concerned with pressure relief. Even so, Casper is a fantastic mattress for side sleepers.

Tuft & Needle vs Casper Pricing
Tuft & Needle is much cheaper, and it’s known as “THE” budget bed-in-a-box. You can snag a queen-size for around $600. Casper offers a queen-size (after discount) for around $1,000. That’s a difference of about $400. That said, Casper is fairly aggressive with its discounts, especially during holidays.
SIZE | CASPER PRICE (MSRP) | TUFT & NEEDLE PRICE (MSRP) |
---|---|---|
Twin | $595 | $450 |
Twin XL | $695 | $495 |
Full | $995 | $595 |
Queen | $1,095 | $695 |
King / California King | $1,295 | $850 |
Sleeper Analysis
How a mattress feels depends on a lot on factors like weight and sleeping position. Here is how Casper vs Tuft & Needle compare for sleepers.
Side Sleepers
Both beds should be fine for side sleepers. As the foam softens over time on the Tuft & Needle, side sleepers will find the bed becomes more accommodating for their hips and shoulders.
Back And Stomach Sleepers
Back and sleepers won’t have a problem, but we think Casper is a little more accommodating for stomach and back sleepers.
Heavy Individuals
Heavy sleepers who weigh more than 250 lbs will be better off going with a thicker all-foam bed or, better yet, with a mattress that contains coils such as the new Casper Hybrid or Wave Hybrid if you like Casper or the Tuft & Needle hybrid if you prefer that mattress.
Casper Mattress vs Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Verdict
Tuft & Needle and Casper are similar, so we can see why it’s hard to decide between the two. To make the decision easier, ask yourself two questions:
- First, what kind of budget do you have? If it’s a tight budget, Tuft & Needle is the clear winner. If money isn’t an issue, we’d say go with Casper.
- How much time do you spend on your side? If the answer is more than 50-60 percent, Casper would be the better choice.

FAQs
In a Tuft vs. Casper comparison, Tuft & Needle beats Casper in value. You’ll save $500 on a queen mattress and $545 on the king size. Don’t mistake the price for compromising on quality — Tuft & Needle’s mattresses are comparable in quality, guarantee and trial period to Casper’s.
