Now that you’re all filled in on the highlights, let’s get into the details, and the specific advantages of each mattress.

Big Fig vs WinkBed: Quick Synopsis

Mattresses generally come in one of two constructions, and if you came to this comparison it looks like you’re leaning towards a hybrid. WinkBed and Big Fig are both durable hybrid mattresses designed with similar objectives in mind. A WinkBed is your Instagram-worthy premium mattress that looks and feels like what you’d sleep on at the Four Seasons, but it’s also made to last. It’s actually one of the mattresses on our Best Mattress for Heavy People post alongside Big Fig.

A Big Fig isn’t really meant to look pretty, but it’s also built to give a super supportive and durable performance. Their slogan is “The mattress for a bigger figure,” so they specifically market towards those who are more heavy set. It’s constructed with the materials required to sufficiently support two individuals up to 500 lbs, and an extra durable foundation comes included with your purchase. You’re more likely to see a Big Fig on a professional athletes episode of MTV Cribs, than in a five star hotel. This is what we mean when we say these mattresses serve different purposes, so in this comparison we’ll get into all the details you’ll want to know before you make up your mind.

WinkBed also has a mattress called WinkBed Plus which was tested in a 20-year simulation with a 350 lb sleeper, and it retained 98% of firmness and 99.2% of its loft. So they do make a mattress that’s especially constructed for heavier folks, but it’s a little more expensive. In this post we’ll be focusing on their original WinkBed mattress, but you can go to WinkBeds.com to find out more on the WinkBed Plus.

WinkBed Is Durable And Luxurious

A WinkBed has a blend of foam and pocketed coils, and is handmade here in the United States over in Wisconsin. The home of the cheese heads and WinkBeds. The foundation of the mattress is made out of 2” support foam and on top of it is 7” pocketed coils, meaning they’re individually wrapped to limit motion transfer. Next is another layer of foam to add a bit more added coziness under the cover.

At the top of WinkBed is a 2” European pillow top made from Hypersoft foam which is basically the comfort layer and will contribute to the overall feel of the mattress. If you’re curious about the difference between a normal pillow top and a Eurotop, you’re not alone. Check out our blog post on European Pillow Tops to learn more.

WinkBed’s bright white cover encases the entire mattress, and it’s made out of a plant-based fiber called Tencel. It’s soft to the touch and it gives the mattress a Pinterest-perfect look to compliment it’s soft but supportive feel.

If you played defensive line in college, you’ll be just fine on WinkBed

If you add all the layers together you get 15” of thickness and durability to equal one beefy mattress. If you haven’t already considered white glove delivery, this is when you might start.

WinkBed Feels Soft But Supportive

One of our favorite things about WinkBed is that it comes in three different firmness levels, so you can keep your sleeper type in mind when you choose a mattress. Their three levels are Softer, Luxury Firm (the most popular), and Firmer, but we rate them at about a medium-soft, medium, and medium-firm. If you’re a strict side sleeper we suggest you look into a Softer model and if you’re a strict back or stomach sleeper you could consider a Firmer model. If you’re somewhere in the middle or consider yourself a combo sleeper, a Luxury Firm model is the most popular because it’s a pretty good balance of supportive and pressure relieving.

winkbed mattress review firmness and feel

With any model you choose, you’ll essentially get the same overall feeling. The two layers of innersprings in the mattress give it a supportive and durable feel with a little bounce, and the pillow top gives it a soft and airy feel. So when we tested it out, we felt a mix of the two. It feels nice to lay on, and it feels even nicer to know it’s durable enough to support you, the kids, spouse, and two dogs that’ll constantly running up and down on it.

Price Difference

When we write these comparisons, there’s usually a big enough price difference where it could possibly persuade someone to pass on a certain mattress. This isn’t going to be one of those kinds of posts. Both WinkBed and Big Fig are more expensive than your average bed-in-a-box, so if you’re willing to spend around $1,500 on a mattress then $100 probably won’t be enough to make you decide against the one you love the sound of.

A WinkBed retails around $1,600 and a Big Fig will go for about $1,700 for the queen size mattress. Plus, you can knock off $100 from that price if you opt out of the foundation. You’ll also want to consider current promotions, and you can sometimes get WinkBed for around $200 off and a Big Fig for up to $150 off. You can check WinkBeds.com and BigFigMattress.com for current offers.

Depending on whether you want the foundation with the bed or not (you probably will, just wait until we tell you about it), the difference is around $50-$150. So technically WinkBed is a little cheaper, but in most cases we don’t think it should be a huge factor in your decision.

We have the most current promotions posted in the table at the top of this post, so make sure you check them out to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck when you decide to buy.

Big Fig Foundation Included

If you measure a Big Fig you’ll find it’s about 13”, which isn’t quite as thick as today’s competitor, WinkBed. You might be wondering how there’s any way it’s going to be just as supportive or even more so than a WinkBed. Well, something Big Fig offers that WinkBed doesn’t is a foundation included in your purchase.

It’s constructed with 18 2.5” wide slats and double center rails, making it able to support five times more than your average foundation. In other words, you probably won’t be finding this baby over at Ikea.

Construction Of A Big Fig Mattress

Going back to the Big Fig mattress itself, it starts with a thin slab of high-density foam that conceals all of the pocketed coils. How many coils are there, you ask? Great question, Slumber Yard reader. There are a whopping 1,600 individually wrapped KING SIZE coils, about 50% more than most innerspring mattresses you’ve probably slept on.

A look at Big Fig’s construction

Above the coils are three layers of poly foam to provide a comfortable transition layer between the coils and latex foam, and to also protect your mattress from sagging. Finally, at the top is perforated latex foam for comfort and good airflow.

Since we mentioned the WinkBed cover we should talk a little bit about the Big Fig mattress cover. It’s a quilted cover with infused thermogel to help cool you down. It’s not exactly cool to the touch, but it’ll help with overall temperature regulation.

The Feel Of Big Fig

A Big Fig mattress feels mostly like its dominant material—coils. When we tested it out, we thought it felt like a traditional innerspring mattress, but a little firmer. The thick layer of latex foam did soften the feel up a little, so it feels like a layer of soft neutral foam on top of a ton of coils. Imagine sleeping on top of your friend’s really fluffy carpet, with a makeshift bed of soft pillows. It’s comfortable, but there’s a noticeably firm surface poking out underneath you. On our firmness scale, we rated it between medium-firm and firm.

BIG FIG MATTRESS REVIEW firmness rating

This is why we think a Big Fig would be great for back and stomach sleepers, because it’ll ensure you don’t sink into the mattress and it’ll keep your spine in good alignment.

It’s firm, but the heavier you are, the softer it will feel

If you’re a side sleeper over 250 lb, we think it might (just might) feel soft enough for you to enjoy, but petite to medium-sized side sleepers, and you could wake up with that annoying pins and needles feeling in your arm. If you’re a petite side sleeper and share the bed with a heavy-set individual, a WinkBed is probably the better option since it will be soft enough to contour to your body, but durable enough for your partner to consistently get a good night’s sleep.

Verdict

As you can see, both WinkBed and Big Fig are good options for heavy individuals because of their durable hybrid constructions. It mostly depends on how supportive you want your mattress to be, and how good you want it to look underneath the sheets.

  • Do you want a softer bed or the option to choose between firmness levels? A WinkBed has several for you to choose from, including “Softer.”
  • Would you like an extra supportive foundation included in your mattress purchase? Big Fig provides a foundation with a special construction when you buy their mattress.
  • Do you want your mattress insurance to last a lifetime? A WinkBed offers lifetime coverage for your mattress, and it’s one of the more a generous warranty policies out there.
  • Do you want a traditional innerspring feel or a firm neutral-foam feel? A WinkBed feels like a soft traditional innerspring mattress and a Big Fig is a firm mattress that feels like a balance between neutral foam and innersprings.
  • Do you like luxury? A WinkBed looks like it belongs in the nicest hotel you’ve been in.

Policies Toward Shipping, Returns, etc.

Now that we’ve gotten to the information you came here for, we’re going to gloss over WinkBed and Big Fig’s company policies so you can get an idea of what to expect when it comes to shipping, returns, etc. You might not care to know now, but you’ll thank us later.

Most bed-in-a-box companies offers free shipping, including WinkBed and Big Fig (although technically only WinkBed is a bed-in-a-box mattress). If you’re a busy person, or have no upper arm strength like me (Slumber Yard member McKenzie), you can take advantage of WinkBed’s white glove delivery, which means the delivery crew will set up your mattress for you. You’ll have to pay a little extra, but a WinkBed is a decently heavy mattress with no handles so it might be worth it for you.

Even if you click that purchase button on whatever website you get your mattress from, the sale isn’t set in stone. Both mattresses will give you a 120 night risk-free trial period to try out your mattress and make sure you like it before you’re committed. If you don’t like your WinkBed or Big Fig, you can return the bed and get 100% of your money back. (Unless you live in CA, RI, and a few other states that charge a small mattress recycling fee).

If you do decide to keep your mattress, which most people do, both WinkBed and Big Fig provide their customers with a warranty policy that outlasts most bed-in-a-box mattresses we’ve tested. Big Fig will give cover their mattresses for 20 years, but WinkBed takes the crown on this matter with their lifetime warranty and their 50% Off Comfort Replacement Option. So as long as you’re breathing, the company will cover your mattress in the event you come across manufacture defects. They’ll also sell you a WinkBed at half off if you decide you want a softer or firmer mattress after your trial period expires, which we really appreciate because we don’t see that very often.
