A Big Fig isn’t really meant to look pretty, but it’s also built to give a super supportive and durable performance. Their slogan is “The mattress for a bigger figure,” so they specifically market towards those who are more heavy set. It’s constructed with the materials required to sufficiently support two individuals up to 500 lbs, and an extra durable foundation comes included with your purchase. You’re more likely to see a Big Fig on a professional athletes episode of MTV Cribs, than in a five star hotel. This is what we mean when we say these mattresses serve different purposes, so in this comparison we’ll get into all the details you’ll want to know before you make up your mind.
WinkBed also has a mattress called WinkBed Plus which was tested in a 20-year simulation with a 350 lb sleeper, and it retained 98% of firmness and 99.2% of its loft. So they do make a mattress that’s especially constructed for heavier folks, but it’s a little more expensive. WinkBed Is Durable And Luxurious
A WinkBed has a blend of foam and pocketed coils, and is handmade here in the United States over in Wisconsin. The home of the cheese heads and WinkBeds. The foundation of the mattress is made out of 2” support foam and on top of it is 7” pocketed coils, meaning they’re individually wrapped to limit motion transfer. Next is another layer of foam to add a bit more added coziness under the cover.
At the top of WinkBed is a 2” European pillow top made from Hypersoft foam which is basically the comfort layer and will contribute to the overall feel of the mattress. WinkBed Feels Soft But Supportive
One of our favorite things about WinkBed is that it comes in three different firmness levels, so you can keep your sleeper type in mind when you choose a mattress. Their three levels are Softer, Luxury Firm (the most popular), and Firmer, but we rate them at about a medium-soft, medium, and medium-firm. If you’re a strict side sleeper we suggest you look into a Softer model and if you’re a strict back or stomach sleeper you could consider a Firmer model. If you’re somewhere in the middle or consider yourself a combo sleeper, a Luxury Firm model is the most popular because it’s a pretty good balance of supportive and pressure relieving.
With any model you choose, you’ll essentially get the same overall feeling. The two layers of innersprings in the mattress give it a supportive and durable feel with a little bounce, and the pillow top gives it a soft and airy feel. So when we tested it out, we felt a mix of the two. It feels nice to lay on, and it feels even nicer to know it’s durable enough to support you, the kids, spouse, and two dogs that’ll constantly running up and down on it.
Price Difference
When we write these comparisons, there’s usually a big enough price difference where it could possibly persuade someone to pass on a certain mattress. This isn’t going to be one of those kinds of posts. Both WinkBed and Big Fig are more expensive than your average bed-in-a-box, so if you’re willing to spend around $1,500 on a mattress then $100 probably won’t be enough to make you decide against the one you love the sound of.
A WinkBed retails around $1,600 and a Big Fig will go for about $1,700 for the queen size mattress. Plus, you can knock off $100 from that price if you opt out of the foundation. Depending on whether you want the foundation with the bed or not (you probably will, just wait until we tell you about it), the difference is around $50-$150. So technically WinkBed is a little cheaper, but in most cases we don’t think it should be a huge factor in your decision.

Big Fig Foundation Included
If you measure a Big Fig you’ll find it’s about 13”, which isn’t quite as thick as today’s competitor, WinkBed. You might be wondering how there’s any way it’s going to be just as supportive or even more so than a WinkBed. Well, something Big Fig offers that WinkBed doesn’t is a foundation included in your purchase.
It’s constructed with 18 2.5” wide slats and double center rails, making it able to support five times more than your average foundation. In other words, you probably won’t be finding this baby over at Ikea.
Construction Of A Big Fig Mattress
Going back to the Big Fig mattress itself, it starts with a thin slab of high-density foam that conceals all of the pocketed coils. How many coils are there, you ask? Great question, Slumber Yard reader. There are a whopping 1,600 individually wrapped KING SIZE coils, about 50% more than most innerspring mattresses you’ve probably slept on.
Above the coils are three layers of poly foam to provide a comfortable transition layer between the coils and latex foam, and to also protect your mattress from sagging. Finally, at the top is perforated latex foam for comfort and good airflow.
Since we mentioned the WinkBed cover we should talk a little bit about the Big Fig mattress cover. It’s a quilted cover with infused thermogel to help cool you down. It’s not exactly cool to the touch, but it’ll help with overall temperature regulation.
The Feel Of Big Fig
A Big Fig mattress feels mostly like its dominant material—coils. When we tested it out, we thought it felt like a traditional innerspring mattress, but a little firmer. The thick layer of latex foam did soften the feel up a little, so it feels like a layer of soft neutral foam on top of a ton of coils. Imagine sleeping on top of your friend’s really fluffy carpet, with a makeshift bed of soft pillows. It’s comfortable, but there’s a noticeably firm surface poking out underneath you. On our firmness scale, we rated it between medium-firm and firm.
This is why we think a Big Fig would be great for back and stomach sleepers, because it’ll ensure you don’t sink into the mattress and it’ll keep your spine in good alignment.
If you’re a side sleeper over 250 lb, we think it might (just might) feel soft enough for you to enjoy, but petite to medium-sized side sleepers, and you could wake up with that annoying pins and needles feeling in your arm. If you’re a petite side sleeper and share the bed with a heavy-set individual, a WinkBed is probably the better option since it will be soft enough to contour to your body, but durable enough for your partner to consistently get a good night’s sleep.
Verdict
As you can see, both WinkBed and Big Fig are good options for heavy individuals because of their durable hybrid constructions. It mostly depends on how supportive you want your mattress to be, and how good you want it to look underneath the sheets.

Now that we’ve gotten to the information you came here for, we’re going to gloss over WinkBed and Big Fig’s company policies so you can get an idea of what to expect when it comes to shipping, returns, etc. You might not care to know now, but you’ll thank us later.
