Avocado Latex Mattress Reviews

If you shop for organic produce, substitute glass containers for plastic, and consistently reuse your bags at the grocery store, you might be interested in the Avocado Latex Mattress. It utilizes organic and sustainable materials like certified organic latex foam and organic cotton to provide a cozy, yet environmentally-friendly sleeping experience. This review will focus primarily on their all-foam organic latex mattress, but keep in mind, they have the hybrid Avocado Green Mattress and even a vegan one you can check out as well.

Construction And Materials

Avocado Latex Mattress Review Overview
A look at the Avocado Latex bed in our Slumber Yard studio

The Avocado Latex Mattress is handmade in sunny Los Angeles and is 100% organic, which can be hard to come by in the online bedding industry. To be certified organic, a product must contain 95% of raw material and follow strict environmental guidelines throughout the entire process, start to finish. Thanks to its organic design, the Avocado Latex Mattress is also antimicrobial and hypoallergenic!

Its construction omits the pocketed steel coils you find in their vegan and Avocado Green Mattress, and instead, it’s made with all foam materials.

This bed is 9″ thick stacked with organic latex foam slabs, designed with small waves and cut-outs to provide targeted support and pressure relief around the top and bottom sections of the mattress. Not all brands put this much effort and detail into the construction of their mattresses, and as such, the Avocado Latex bed is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. This might be a bonus for anyone who suffers from back pain searching for extra relief.

On top of the latex foam is organic wool batting for extra pressure relief and plushness, and it’s wrapped in an organic cotton cover. Like we said, the entire thing is certified organic. We think it’s about as natural as you can get without sleeping on the ground outside.

We also want to note how it comes with handles, which is an added plus because all-foam latex beds are known to be pretty darn heavy. So, if you ever have to move your mattress to a new house, apartment, etc., you’re in the clear!

Mattress Cover

A close up of the soft organic cotton cover

The cover on the Avocado Latex Mattress is an off-white color, and it gives off a very fresh, clean smell. You might be thinking, smell is an odd thing for a mattress review team to comment on. However, many new bed in a box mattresses have an “off-gassing” smell, thanks to being compressed and stuffed in a box for several days. The smell disappears in a few days, but it’s enough to put off some natural and organic lovers. Avocado, on the other hand, smells fresh and natural!

The cover is not removable, so if you happen to get a stain on your cover from a coffee spill or drool stain, you’ll have to spot clean with mild soap and warm water.

Avocado Latex Mattress Feel And Firmness

Thanks to the natural composition of latex foam, this mattress tends to be a bit on the firm side. And considering it’s stacked to the brim with latex foam, don’t expect it to feel soft unless you’re a sleeper over 230 lbs. We rated the Avocado Latex Mattress around a medium-firm on our firmness scale. The company claims it’s their firmest mattress, but we think it’s just a smidge firmer than their Avocado Green Mattress (with the pillow top included).

As far as the feel goes, it’s not at all like a memory foam mattress. Instead of sinking into the mattress, It’s very responsive, bouncy, and supportive. Overall, we think it has a firm foam feel with a solid bounce-factor and will make firm mattress lovers very happy.

Temperature

This can be a touchy subject because a lot of factors go into how hot you sleep, like the pajamas you wear, the climate you live in, and if you sleep with a partner or alone. However, with that said, latex foam is perforated with a ton of flow, allowing for increased airflow. As a result, most people will sleep more temperature-neutral than warm.

Is Avocado Latex Mattress A Good Bed For Couples?

When it comes to sleeping with a partner, there are a few additional mattress attributes you should keep an eye out for including motion isolation and edge support. The Avocado Latex Mattress checks out in both areas.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation refers to the way a bed deadens movement so you don’t disturb your partner when you switch positions, use the bathroom in the middle of the night, etc. If you think of a bouncy mattress, you might wonder how good the motion isolation is really going to be. With the Avocado Latex bed, however, you have the added wool batting to help suppress motion across the surface. We don’t think it’s the best motion isolation, but it’s also not the worst.

Edge Support

JD testing out edge support on the Avocado Latex bed

Edge support usually isn’t the most important checkmark on a person’s mattress specification list, unless you intend to share a full-size bed with your partner or you like to sleep near the very edge. Edge support is how supportive the perimeter of the bed is, and all-foam beds aren’t known for their spectacular edge support.

We think edge support is decent in the Avocado Latex bed thanks to the firm profile of the bed’s latex foam. If this is an important aspect for you, check out the original Avocado mattress, instead.

Sleeper Type Analysis

The right mattress for you will partly depend on your predominant sleeping position. We categorize sleepers into three different categories, as you can see below.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers typically like a soft mattress to provide pressure relief to their shoulders and hips. As such, we think this bed is too firm and supportive, unless you weigh over 230 lbs. Though, we don’t necessarily recommend this bed to heavy sleepers thanks to its all-foam design (more on that below).

Back And Stomach Sleepers

Avocado Latex Mattress Review Back Sleeper Example
We think this mattress will be best suited for back and stomach sleepers

This bed is made for stomach and back sleepers who typically like a firmer bed to keep their backs in neutral alignment. A soft mattress won’t provide enough support for your back and stomach and might lead to significant back pain

Combo Sleepers

Combo sleepers can either opt for a bed with a medium firmness level to suit all sleeping positions (back, side, and stomach) or they can cater to their dominant sleeper position. In this case, we don’t think it’s great unless you switch between your back and stomach. It might be a tad bit too firm for most average to petite size combo sleepers.

Avocado Latex Mattress Body Type Analysis

Like sleeper type, your body weight and BMI will help you determine the materials you should look for in a mattress.

Heavy Individuals

For anyone who weighs over 230 lbs, we don’t recommend this mattress. It’s only 9” thick, and made with foam materials that may not be durable for heavy sleepers in the long-term. Though, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a natural and organic mattress.

The Avocado Green bed has a ton of green certifications, and is perfectly accommodating for any boy type.

Petite To Average Individuals

We think this bed is ideal for anyone who weighs under 230 lbs. The durable and supportive latex foam will hold up fine underneath petite and average-weighted sleepers.

Though, we want you to keep in mind that weight affects the feel of a mattress. That means petite sleepers about 150 lbs and under will think this is a very, very firm bed.

Price

As you can expect with most organic and natural products, Avocado Latex Mattress is a bit more expensive than your average Casper or Layla. As of right now, a queen size bed will retail around $1,800. If you’re somebody who really values sustainability and organic materials, it might be worth the price to you. If not, there are plenty of all-foam mattresses you can buy for under $1,000.

SizePrice (MSRP)
Twin$1,599
Twin XL$1,699
Full$1,899
Queen$2,199
King$2,899
Cal King$2,899

The price of this mattress can drop, however, which is typical with the online mattress company. They tend to fluctuate in prices, depending on current promotions or deals. We suggest you check out their website, or take a look at our deals page for all the current pricing.

Avocado Latex Mattress Review Verdict

If we’re being honest, we do like this mattress but only for a small group of individuals. We think you should be a back and stomach sleepers, weigh less than 230 lbs, and be willing to fork out a decent amount of money for premium, eco-friendly materials. We think you’re paying for the green certifications that come with the bed, as well as the quality design and Avocado craftsmanship.

Though, if you have a heavy body type, want the support of coils, sleep on your side or a combination of all of them, this isn’t the bed for you. Especially if you’re on a budget. We suggest you check out our best natural and organic mattress list, or peek at the other mattresses that Avocado has to offer.

Avocado Latex Mattress Vs.

This bed isn’t the only organic mattress in the game. Check out how the Avocado Latex Mattress compares to other natural and organic beds.

Avocado Latex Mattress vs. Avocado Green Mattress

If you’re a huge fan of Avocado (and not just the fruits), you might be curious about the differences between these two mattresses. For one, their Green mattress is constructed with a pocketed coil base layer, making it better for folks who weigh over 230 lbs or anyone looking for more durability. The Latex mattress is also more expensive than the Green mattress, partly due to its 100% organic design. A queen-size Avocado Green Mattress retails for around $1,400 while the queen Avocado Latex bed sells for about $400 more.

Avocado Latex Mattress vs. PlushBeds Mattress

PlushBeds is similar to Avocado Latex in that it is stacked with three layers of organic latex foam, and also incorporates organic wool and organic cotton. PlushBeds, however, has multiple firmness levels to choose from, and have designed the latex layers with different firmness levels so you can further customize the firmness by rearranging the foam slabs. This makes it better for side sleepers who want to go all-natural.

Is the Avocado Latex Mattress expensive?

That depends on who’s asking, but it is more expensive than many online mattresses because of its premium, certified organic design. A queen-size bed retails for around $1,800.

Who Is the Avocado Latex Mattress best for?

We think it’s best for petite to average-weighted sleepers who live a natural and organic lifestyle and primarily sleep on their stomach or back.

Is the Avocado Latex Mattress a good bed?

It’s made with completely non-toxic, organic materials that make for a comfortable mattress. Though, it’s only recommended for stomach and back sleepers, or people who prefer a firm mattress. We rated it around a medium-firm on our scale.
