Avocado Mattress Construction And Design
The Avocado Green mattress is a hybrid bed, constructed with both foam and coils for support that doesn’t compromise comfort. The bed is stacked with the three layers shown below.
- Base Coil layer — An 8” layer of individually wrapped recycled steel coils to give the bed a bouncy and supportive feel. According to the brand, there are 1,414 different coils arranged in five ergonomic zones to provide targeted support where you need it most.
- Comfort layer — A 3” layer of organic Dunlop latex foam for comfort and support.
- Optional comfort layer — A pillow top with an additional 2” of organic latex foam to make the mattress feel plusher and pressure relieving.
The eco-friendly recycled steel coils are individually fabric-encased, which allows for zoned support and prevents depressed coils from creating a ripple effect throughout the mattress.
Avocado Organic Mattress Cover
The cover on the Avocado mattress is made of organic cotton and button-tufted by hand. The material is soft and smells nice. We compare it to a farmers’ market or even the outside of an avocado. It’s earthy.
The cover is non-removable, which means your only option for cleaning up a spill is spot cleaning. You may also choose to purchase a mattress protector, but it could stifle the airflow and change the feel.
Natural And Organic Features
The Avocado Green mattress is known for its natural and organic materials, along with the company’s eco-conscious manufacturing practices. Those features are a big reason these mattresses are more expensive.
Here are the materials and relevant certifications that show why Avocado Green mattress reviews are so positive:
- 100% GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex sustainably harvested from rubber trees. The material is antimicrobial, meaning that it prevents allergies and dust mites.
- 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic certified wool sourced from an Avocado-owned cooperative in India, which provides moisture-wicking and flame retardant properties.
- An organic cotton, button-tufted cover that’s GOTS certified, is sourced in the U.S. and has no chemical adhesives.
It’s also worth mentioning that all Avocado mattresses are handmade in the company’s Los Angeles factory that is GOTS and GOLS certified. The beds are also GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. This certification ensures that the materials satisfy strict standards for emissions of pollutants and chemical exposure.
All of this combined is the reason that Avocado made our list of the Best Natural And Organic Mattresses.
Avocado Latex Mattress Firmness and Feel
The Avocado is a hybrid mattress, meaning its construction contains both foam and coils. The Avocado mattress topper option will cost you $240 to $500 extra, depending on what size mattress you’re adding it to. You get an extra 2″ of latex foam, which helps to soften up the bed from firm to medium-firm.
While hybrid beds have different feels, this one feels exactly as you’d expect. The coils give it that traditional innerspring feel, while the foam provides a thin layer of softness that can be added to with the optional pillow topper.
Both with and without the extra couple inches of foam, the Avocado is great in terms of responsiveness. It bounces back quickly after being pressed. Here’s an example of how quick Avocado is in responding to pressure.
Good responsiveness also means it won’t take any particular effort to switch positions while you sleep—no feeling stuck. For certain sleeper types, this can help you get more restful sleep because you aren’t having to fight your mattress to switch sleeping positions at night.
The Avocado mattress probably isn’t for anyone looking for a cozy, sink-in feel from their mattress. In other words, if you like memory foam, Avocado isn’t the bed for you.
Is Avocado A Good Mattress For Couples?
We think Avocado has good edge support. You won’t feel like you’re going to fall off the side.
It also has good motion isolation, which means that the mattress deadens most cross-bed motion. This is beneficial when you sleep with a partner who moves in their sleep or gets out of bed much earlier than you do. However, the Avocado Green mattress isn’t as great as an all-foam mattress for motion isolation.
Avocado is constructed with latex foam, which is generally cooler than memory foam thanks to its perforated holes allowing continuous airflow. The innerspring also contribute to the bed’s breathability. So, we think it sleeps on the cooler end of the spectrum, more so than memory foam or poly foam mattresses. However, it’s still temperature neutral.
Avocado Sleeper Type Analysis
All bodies are different, so what is comfortable to one person might not be comfortable for someone else. We based our Avocado mattress reviews on average body types, but we’ve provided some guidelines to help everyone determine if this mattress could be a good fit.
- Side Sleepers
With or without the pillow top, this bed is on the firmer side. For petite and medium-size side sleepers, the bed will likely be a little too firm. It doesn’t offer as much pressure relief as other mattresses. If you’re a strict side sleeper, check out our list of the Best Mattresses For Side Sleepers.
If you’re heavier and add the pillow top, you’ll probably be fine sleeping on your side with Avocado Green mattress.
- Combo Sleepers
If you move around a lot at night, you’ll enjoy the excellent responsiveness of the Avocado Green mattress. While strict side sleepers may need something softer, combo sleepers should be comfortable with the support and feel of the Avocado mattress.
Body Type Analysis
We also want to make sure to mention in our Avocado mattress reviews that your body type can have an impact on the way a mattress will feel.
If you’re petite, you might find it to be too firm without the topper, especially if you’re a side sleeper. But if you enjoy a medium-firm feel, the Avocado mattress with the topper could be comfortable for you.
If you’re average weight, choose whether or not to add the optional topper based on your personal preferences. The Avocado will feel firm without the topper and medium-firm with the topper.
Heavier people need a bed that offers a lot of support, and they should also consider the durability of a mattress because the bigger the person, the faster they’ll wear it down. Avocado is a durable, thicker mattress at 11-13″, depending on whether you opt for the pillow top or not. Still, either way, it’s plenty thick for heavier folks, and the bed’s coils and firmness provide enough support for our bigger sleepers.
Avocado Mattress Pricing
Given its eco-friendly design, the Avocado Green Mattress is a slightly more expensive bed. Compared to other online mattresses, Avocado isn’t going to win any recognition for affordability, but that’s not the point.
This mattress is intended to be a good buy for the money if you place a lot of value on natural and organic materials. You can find a breakdown of the pricing for each size, with and without the additional topper, below.
|SIZE||BASE PRICE (MSRP)||WITH TOPPER|
|King / Cal King||$1,899||$2,499|
Is There An Avocado Mattress Coupon Or Discount Code?
Avocado sometimes offers limited-time discount codes on its mattresses. You might also catch an occasional Avocado mattress sale.
No matter how you look at it, this bed is an investment—a product that you will keep for 7+ years in most cases. If you can’t find an Avocado mattress coupon, you’ll still get your money’s worth.
Avocado Green Mattress Review Verdict
|Weight||Petite (<150 lbs)||Medium (150-230 lbs)||Heavy (>230 lbs)|
It’s not as cheap as an Amazon bed, but it is solid value if you care about materials and manufacturing processes. For back, stomach and combination sleepers, Avocado is going to be a great bed. It will be even better if you want a responsive, naturally cooler mattress. The only negatives that you can point out with this bed are related to personal preferences that some Avocado customer reviews will mention. It’s not for everyone, but there’s a considerable subset of people who will love the Avocado mattress.

Avocado Company Information
The online mattress industry has some pretty standard policies when it comes to shipping, returns, trial periods and the like. Avocado, for example, offers:
- Free shipping and free returns
- A full year sleep trial
- A 25-year limited warranty
Despite being a somewhat heavy mattress—like a lot of the beds we’ve reviewed—Avocado ships in a box. It’s compressed and rolled up inside plastic wrapping. You’ll probably want a friend to give you a hand with the unboxing process.
To fit the mattress in its box, it has to be tightly folded and compressed. You’ll want to give your new bed up to 48 hours to fully take shape.
- Avocado vs. Purple
We are looking at two responsive, durable beds here. As we’ve mentioned, Avocado uses latex foam, while Purple has a proprietary material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer. The feel will be totally different. Compared to Purple, Avocado will have more of a traditional innerspring feel. Purple is unique and feels almost like you’re laying on a giant Dr. Scholl’s insole. You can find out more in our full Avocado vs. Purple comparison.
- Avocado vs. Zinus
These two are polar opposites, so Zinus might be a good choice if Avocado doesn’t sound at all like something you’d like. Avocado is firmer, more supportive and more premium in terms of materials and construction. Zinus, however, sells for under $500 and has a soft, memory foam feel. Before the AmazonBasics mattress hit the scene, Zinus was considered the budget mattress.
We thing they will so as long as you add the add the optional topper. We think all sleeping positions will be fine on Avocado.
