Bear MLS Foam Bed
The Major League Soccer Mattress by Bear is an all-foam bed in a box that’s best for kids and teens
Last Updated: September 13, 2020
The Bear MLS bed is totally geared towards your kiddos. Particularly your soccer-loving kiddos. When it’s time to buy a mattress for your children, you’re probably not looking to go all out on a high-end, luxury bed, but you still want them to be comfortable and happy. And catering to their interests with something like a bunch of Major League Soccer logos is only going to win you parental bonus points.
Parents shopping on a budget
Soccer lovin’ sleepers (the mattress has Major League Soccer logos on it)
Kids (it’s not designed for full-grown sleepers)
Folks looking for an all-foam bed
Those that like a soft neutral-foam feel
Anyone who wants the security of a trial period and free returns
Kids who aren’t actually kid-sized (it’s best for smaller, lighter bodies)
Bear no longer has a contract with Major League Soccer. As such, this particular mattress has been discontinued. You can see all of Bear’s other products here. We left the review below so you can see what the mattress is like, but none of it really matters since the bed isn’t available for sale any longer.
Buying The MLS Mattress
While most online mattress companies will offer free shipping, free returns, a 100-night trial period, and a 10-year warranty, Bear cuts back on those policies for this particular mattress.
With the Bear MLS mattress, you do get free shipping, but there’s no trial period and no option for returns through Bear. You’ll be purchasing this mattress through Amazon, though, so you’ll have to look into their return policy.
You do get a 10-year warranty if you keep the mattress, though.
As for how the bed ships, well, it ships in a box about the size of a mini fridge. It’s vacuum sealed and compressed and somehow fits inside the box. Here’s a look at the unboxing experience. It takes a few minutes, but it’s actually a pretty fun process.
Like any other bed-in-a-box mattress, the Bear MLS mattress will take a few hours to inflate entirely. Since it’s been compressed inside a box for several days, the foams need to be able to expand fully. Just make sure you’re not sleeping on the mattress the night that you unbox it—let about a full day pass before you sleep on it.
Pricing For The MLS Bed
One of the biggest advantages of this mattress is the price. When you’re shopping for a child or tween, you don’t really want to spend a lot of money on a bed they’ll outgrow, so it’s a good thing the Bear MLS mattress is reasonably priced. You can find twin, full, queen, and king sizes on Amazon. Check out the table below for the pricing breakdown.
Whenever we find coupon codes or promo codes, we make sure to share them with you, but we haven’t had any luck with this particular mattress. However, we suggest you keep an eye out for price drops around major holidays.
What’s Inside The MLS Bed?
The Bear MLS mattress is about as basic as it gets. It’s an entirely poly foam bed that’s only 8” thick. It has two layers—one of generic poly foam and a proprietary response foam top layer. There really isn’t much to it, which is why we consider this bed a kid’s mattress.
Ultimately, it isn’t going to last an impressive amount of time if treated the same way you treat your master bedroom mattress, but because little Tommy or Sally isn’t adult-sized, they aren’t going to wear it out nearly as fast. You can expect the Bear MLS mattress to make it through their childhood and maybe even teenhood (and then they can move on to a plastic-covered dorm mattress for their college years).

The cover on the Bear MLS bed is removable, but we wouldn’t really count that as an advantage because a lot of beds have removable covers. Plus, the fact that it’s removable has more to do with convenience during manufacturing than any kind of notable benefit for the consumer.
And, as is the case with most mattresses, the cover is not machine washable. If you need to do some clean up, you’ll have to spot clean. Spot cleaning is a breeze, though. You just need some warm water and a little bit of mild detergent. Dab at the stain or spot (without getting the mattress too wet) and that’s all there is to it.
If you’re especially concerned about accidents or spills, you may want to look into getting a mattress protector. You can find a lot of affordable options on Amazon. But keep in mind that a mattress protector might change the feel of the bed a little and can stifle airflow. We don’t think that will be much of an issue for kids, though.
There is one more important cover detail to mention—the Major League Soccer logos. It’s literally in the name of the mattress, so I think it’s fair to say the embellishments are a selling point, and it’s a fun feature that your young soccer fan is going to appreciate.
Our Opinion Of Firmness And Feel
Being a thin, poly foam mattress, the Bear MLS mattress feels just like what it is—a slab of foam. It’s a neutral-foam feel, around a medium to medium-firm in terms of firmness, and isn’t really notable for any reason. It’s a bit like Casper Element, but slightly firmer. It’s just very basic, which is fine since you don’t really need something fancy or luxurious for a kid.
If you’re thinking the bed will be too firm for Junior, keep in mind that it will soften over time just like any other foam mattress. Plus, as your kid gets older, that medium to medium-firm won’t feel so hard to their growing body.
It does have good responsiveness, though, meaning it bounces back quickly, so your youngin’ won’t have any trouble turning over at night.

The bed will work for back and stomach sleepers. But keep in mind that we’re thinking about this as a bed for people who are not full-grown adults. This is just a plain ole’ poly foam bed. It’ll be perfectly fine for young bodies, but it’s not meant to cater to the support needs of grown ups.
It will also work for a little tyke who sleeps on their side or switches positions twenty times a night. It might feel a little firm for them if they’re very young, but as they grow and get heavier, the bed will start to feel softer.
Plus, kids have a much easier time getting comfortable in general. I mean, I’ve seen a kid fall asleep on a picnic table.
Other Items That Couple Be Important
Edge support and motion isolation are things we usually talk about for couples. For people who are sharing a bed, you want to be sure you have as much usable mattress space as possible, so edge support matters. And you don’t want to be jostling your partner awake at night, which is why couples ought to think about motion transfer.
They aren’t super important features on a bed that’s for a child, but we’ll go over them anyway for good measure.
The Bear MLS mattress is just fine in both categories. Your kid won’t feel like they’re falling off the bed if they get close to the edge, so that’s a plus, right?
The mattress also does a good job of limiting cross-bed motion, but unless there’s an especially cuddly family pet or sibling in the picture, it probably doesn’t matter all that much.
Is This A Good Mattress For All Body Types?
As we’ve said throughout this post, this bed is best for kids. That being said, the ideal body type for this mattress is petite—small, little, fun size (you know… kids).
It’s a thinner mattress that isn’t designed to handle full-sized adults—at least not as their primary bed. For the light, nimble bodies of kids, though, it’s not a problem.
We call this a temperature neutral mattress—it isn’t going to be the reason someone sleeps too hot, but it isn’t going to help them stay cool either. I don’t think this is generally a concern for children and tweens, but if your kid happens to be a sweaty sleeper, just know that this bed isn’t going to prevent that.
Final Take On The MLS Bed
Overall, we’re not going to say this is one of our favorite mattresses, but it’s a perfectly good option for kids and lighter teens, particularly if they’re a soccer fan. It’s absolutely nothing fancy, but it’s affordable and simple and the MLS embellishments are a fun bonus feature.
We were sent this bed from Bear Mattress in order to review it. We did not accept any money, however, to post good or bad things about this bed.
No, not really. The layers are not similar to Bear’s other mattresses because this is a stand-alone project in partnership with the MLS.
Unfortunately, as we mentioned earlier, you can’t return the Bear MLS mattress. So if you’re not happy with the bed, you’ll have to deal with it on your own terms. You have the options of reselling it or donating it to a charity.
You can put this mattress on whatever you’ve already got—foundation, box spring, the floor, etc.. It’s also a good mattress for bunk beds, being thin and not overly heavy.
The Bear MLS mattress is made with CertiPUR-US certified foam materials. That means it has low VOC and is non-toxic. It’s safe for you, your kiddo, and the environment.
Bear sources its materials and manufactures its products in the USA.
