GhostBed is back at it again with another online mattress, but it’s unlike the original GhostBed mattress which has an all-foam construction with synthetic latex. Instead, GhostBed Flex incorporates several layers of memory foam and a supportive innerspring core. With that said, memory foam haters may still enjoy this mattress because it’s surprisingly more responsive than most. What Is The GhostBed Flex Made Of?
To put it simply, the GhostBed Flex is a beast of a mattress. It’s composed of six different layers and totals a whopping 13″ thick.
- Cover: Special cooling fabric to keep you cool
- Top layer: 1″ gel memory foam
- Middle layer: 1″ gel memory foam
- Middle layer: 1″ soft transition foam
- Middle layer: 8.5″ individually wrapped coils
- Bottom layer: 1″ high density support foam
For the bottom layer, the bed uses a 1″ layer of high density support foam. From a practical standpoint, you won’t even notice this layer. It’s more so there to serve as a foundation for the coils above. On that note, the next layer consists of sturdy 8.5″ individually wrapped coils, which give the bed a strong support framework. GhostBed also made sure to include reinforced coils along the perimeter of the bed to ensure sleepers receive solid edge support as they roll-over towards the sides.
On top of the coils is a 1″ layer of soft transition foam. As the name implies, this layer is simply there to serve as a transition from the firm steel coils below. Next, GhostBed uses two separate 1″ layers of gel memory foam, which combine to provide sleepers with pressure relief and act as the true comfort layers for the bed.
The Flex Cover
Finally, within the cover, GhostBed uses a special cooling fabric, which is supposed to help you sleep cool throughout the night. We’ve seen this before with GhostBed’s other flex top mattresses. Their Luxe mattress uses a similar type of material in its cover to help regulate heat.
Overall, we’re pretty impressed with the construction of the Flex mattress. If you’re looking for a thick, durable bed that will last a long time, the Flex definitely fits the bill.
Mattress Feel And Firmness
Although the bed uses multiple layers of memory foam, we wouldn’t consider the Flex mattress to be a pure play memory foam mattress. Don’t get me wrong, you can definitely tell the bed uses memory foam when you’re laying down. But overall, we’d say the bed has more of a neutral feel to it. The top layers just don’t conform and contour to your body as much as the top layers on the Layla or Nectar mattresses, for example. I guess the best way to describe the feel of the Flex mattress would be that it has a neutral-foam feel with a hint of memory foam.
All in all, it’s an extremely comfortable mattress. We like the fact that it sort of toes the line between memory foam and neutral foam. We think it lands near the center of the fairway for a lot of consumers out there. People who like memory foam will enjoy the mattress as will people who generally dislike memory foam. I guess you could say the GhostBed Flex is the mattress equivalent to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In other words, the vast majority of people will like the bed.
In terms of firmness, we think the GhostBed Flex mattress lands around a medium on the soft-to-firm scale. At the end of the day, it’s a very accommodating mattress that offers a nice symmetry between pressure relief and support.
Temperature Regulation Analysis
After testing out the bed, we feel that the GhostBed Flex mattress sleeps temperature neutral. We know the bed incorporates special cooling materials but at the end of the day, we just didn’t feel strongly enough to give it the cooling mattress designation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing by the way. We just think the mattress won’t be the primary reason why you cool down or warm up throughout the night. If you are looking for a cooling bed, you should check out the GhostBed Luxe, which the company claims is the coolest mattress on earth.
Is GhostBed Flex A Good Mattress For Couples?
Individuals who share their bed with a partner or pet will be just fine on the GhostBed Flex Mattress. The bed performs well when it comes to edge support and motion isolation, which are two of the most important factors for couples to consider when mattress shopping.
Edge Support
In terms of edge support, the Flex mattress gets a very high grade. The perimeter of the bed is solid. As you inch towards the side of the mattress, you feel properly supported and never as if you’re going to roll-off.
Motion Isolation
The Flex bed does a pretty decent job of deadening movement. The test below is supposed to mimic your partner rolling around and creating movement throughout the night.
As you can see above, the water in the glass stays somewhat steady despite the intense movement, which is a good sign the mattress will be able to isolate the motion originating from your partner.

Based on the construction and firmness profile of the mattress, we think GhostBed Flex will accommodate people of all shapes and sizes. It doesn’t matter whether you weigh 100 pounds soaking wet or 300 pounds after a five day all-juice diet. The 8.5″ individually wrapped coils in the bed provide more than enough support.
However, keep in mind, although the mattress properly supports all body types, that doesn’t mean the bed will feel the same to every person.

In terms of price, the GhostBed Flex is a little more expensive than the typical bed-in-a-box, but honestly that’s expected given its high-quality construction. This isn’t your typical budget all-foam mattress like Tuft & Needle. So with that in mind, we actually think the Flex is a pretty decent value, especially compared to similar beds that you would find in your local brick-and-mortar mattress store. By the way, don’t let the pricing above scare you off. GhostBed is almost always running some sort of sale or promotion to make their beds more affordable. On average, we’d say expect to receive at least a $100 discount on your purchase. However, we have seen the company offer even larger discounts in the past. All in all, we were pretty impressed by the GhostBed Flex. In all honesty, we think it’s the best bed GhostBed offers. It’s tough to find many negatives with this mattress. I guess the only thing you can really point to is the price tag. At the end of the day, there are other hybrid beds that are just as accommodating but more affordable. Still, if price really isn’t an issue, it’s tough to beat this bed. Don’t be surprised to see it land on several of our Best Mattress Lists.

How We Test Mattresses
My Slumber Yard has been around since the beginning of the bed in a box craze. Our team has personally tested and reviewed over 175 mattresses so far, and we keep more than 150 beds in our office so we can compare them (and take afternoon naps).
When testing mattresses, we evaluate the following factors:
- Construction: We cut beds open to see what’s inside and how it’s made.
- Feel: We check if it has a stuck-in-the-mud memory foam feel, or if it’s more of a neutral foam or a plush pillow top, etc.
- Firmness: We have our own firmness scale and evaluate how that may vary depending on your body and sleeper type.
- Pressure relief: We test what’s the sweet spot for different body and sleeper types.
- Support: How that changes by body/sleeper type
- Edge Support: This is important for couples who share a bed. Would you roll out of the bed, or can you sleep confidently close to the edges?
- Motion Isolation: We use the water glass test to see how the bed fares with motion transfer. This is another important factor for couples who don’t want to wake up when they move.
- Temperature Regulation: We use a temperature gun to evaluate if the bed warms up, stays neutral or actively cools while you sleep.
- Noise: This could be an issue in beds with coils or innerspring.
- Off-Gassing: Some beds could have a smell for a few weeks after unpacking, and we try to warn you about it.
- Company policies: We also take into account policies such as shipping, returns, trial period and warranty.

No, the GhostBed Flex mattress is compatible with most box spring foundations, slatted frames and adjustable bases. In other words, you most likely will not need to purchase a new frame. However, with that said, you’ll want to make sure your existing frame or foundation is able to support the weight (see next question) of the mattress as well as you and your partner.
The weight of the mattress depends on which size you purchase. It ranges from around 58 pounds for a twin size to around 124 pounds for a split king size.
Last we checked, the GhostBed Flex mattress was only available to purchase online. GhostBed does not operate or partner with any brick-and-mortar mattress retailers. That means you’ll have to rely on the company’s 101-night sleep trial in order to test the bed.
