Intellibed Signature Matrix Grand Mattress Construction
The Intellibed mattress is unlike any other mattress out there, and a lot of it has to do with its construction. Not only is it 17” thick, but several layers are made with their special Gel Matrix. It’s a gel-like material similar to Purple mattress’ Hyper-Elastic Polymer, and we think it’s super comfortable. Here’s a breakdown of the inside starting from the bottom:
- Zoned steel coils in the base layer provide a bulk of the bed’s support.
- A porous foam layer with an open-cell design, allowing the passage of airflow.
- The first Gel Matrix layer that’s 2 ½” thick for pressure relief and support.
- A thin foam layer that neutralizes the gel-like feel and adds a bit more comfort
- A 1 ¼” thick layer of the Gel Matrix material, again, for both pressure relief and support.
- A thin layer of Talalay latex foam that is breathable, bouncy, durable, and contouring around your curves.
- Energex foam infused with titanium that feels pressure relieving and helps regulate temperature.
- Quilted cover that gives the bed a luxury look and an even more comfortable feel.
A bed’s durability is typically reliant on its thickness and the quality of the materials used. As you can see, this is one big mattress, and they use a myriad of different bedding materials, including foam and steel coils. If support and durability are something you value, Intellibed offers just that.
You know the saying you get what you pay for? This definitely rings true for Intellibed. We don’t want to beat around the bush, it’s obvious that this is an incredibly expensive mattress and won’t fit in everyone’s budget. It’s not for your run-of-the-mill mattress shopper. Instead, the audience for this bed has to have the disposable income to drop thousands of dollars. A queensize Signature Matrix Grand mattress retails around $7,000 — one of the most pricey beds we’ve ever tested here.
Signature Matrix Grand Mattress Firmness And Feel
What does it feel like?
You might be wondering, what exactly does a mattress made with gel feel like? It’s certainly unique and unlike most beds out there except for Purple, who also utilizes a proprietary, gel-like material. The gel itself is squishy, like a little rubber toy or a Dr. Scholl’s insole.
Paired with the top foam layers and a quilted top, we think this bed feels responsive and incredibly light. What we mean by that is you almost feel like you’re floating when you’re on it, and it won’t give you that “stuck” feel that memory foam does.
On our scale from one to 10, with 10 being the firmest, we rate this bed right in the middle, around a five. It offers ample pressure relief while remaining very supportive. It’s not too firm, nor is it too soft. Instead, it’s at that sweet spot right in the middle of the spectrum.
Soft beds typically have the best pressure relief, but we think this bed offers nice pressure relief to almost all sleepers. That’s especially true if you weigh over 230 lbs. We think this bed contours around pressure points like your hips and shoulders, and it keeps your back properly supported.
Sleeper Type Analysis
Think back to when you woke up this morning—which position was it in? Are there one or two sleeping positions you prefer? We ask because your sleeper type should help you determine whether or not a mattress is or isn’t right for you.
- Side Sleepers
Side sleepers usually sleep best on soft to medium beds that offer a decent amount of pressure relief for their hips and shoulders. As such, Intellibed is a good option for side sleepers, particularly those over 230 lbs.
- Back and Stomach Sleepers
For those who sleep straight on their back or stomach, beds with medium to firm profiles tend to be the most accommodating. This is because they prevent your back from sagging into the mattress, which can lead to back pain. Since Intellibed has a medium firmness profile, we think it’s a good option for back or stomach sleepers.
- Combo Sleepers
If you can relate to more than one of the sleeping positions above, you’re probably a combination sleeper. In that case, the best bed firmness typically falls around a medium. Of course, that means combination sleepers will be accommodated on the Signature Matrix Grand’s because of its medium firmness level.
Body Type Analysis
Your body type and BMI also plays a role in how suitable a mattress will be. We always recommend hybrid beds to heavier individuals because they’re more supportive, while petite to average sleepers can opt for an all-foam or hybrid mattress.
- Petite Individuals
People under 150 lbs. will usually feel like their mattress feels firmer than the average person. That’s because their body exudes less pressure than average to large body types. This mattress will work for petite individuals, but to be honest, it might be a tad overkill unless you sleep on your back and stomach.
- Average Individuals
People in between the 150 lbs. to 230 lbs. range will be just fine in the Intellibed Signature Matrix Grand mattress. In fact, most mattresses work well for average-weighted individuals.
- Heavy Individuals
Heavy sleepers who weigh over 230 lbs. will really love how thick and durable the Matrix Grand mattress is, but it might feel a little too soft for heavy back and stomach sleepers.
Signature Matrix Grand Mattress Performance
Aside from firmness, feel, and construction, here are our thoughts on the bed’s remaining characteristics:
Thanks to the grid-like design of the Gel Matrix layers, this bed offers up a ton of airflow. Combined with the titanium-infused and open-celled foam layers for even more breathability, this bed is temperature regulating. It doesn’t necessarily sleep cold, but we think it’s good at keeping you from warming up.
- Motion Isolation
This refers to how well a bed deadens movement. This is more important to the people who share a bed with a significant other who tends to move around a lot. We think The Signature Matrix Grand mattress is great at motion isolation, and you shouldn’t be bothered by your partner waking up in the middle of the night.
- Edge Support
Edge support refers to the strength of the bed’s edges, so you don’t feel like you’re going to fall off when you’re pushed to the side. If you share a full or queen size bed with a partner, this one’s for you! When we lay down on the edge of the Intellibed Signature Matrix Grand, we feel properly supported and comfortable. This could partly be due to the fact that the bed uses zoned coils specifically designed to give you support where you need it most.
Signature Matrix Grand Mattress Verdict
You’ve made it to the end of the mattress review, and you’re wondering whether or not you should pull the trigger on the Signature Matrix Grand bed. If you have the money to spend over $5,000 on a new bed, you likely won’t be disappointed with this.
Our favorite parts about this mattress:
- It’s extremely thick and durable, and we think it’ll last you a long time, unlike a thin foam mattress.
- It’s very accommodating, as it’s supportive enough for any body type and comfortable enough for any sleeping position.
- The feel is very unique. You get a traditional bed feel from the comfy quilted top, but the Gel Matrix in the bed makes it feel more weightless, bouncy, and pressure relieving.
What to consider:
- It’s extremely pricey, especially compared to your average bed-in-a-box mattress.
- Sleepers under 150 lbs. might not love this bed because it’s so thick and supportive. It may be a little bit overkill.

The Review Team
In all honesty, it won’t be worth the money for a lot of people just because it’s so expensive, and you can buy a quality mattress for thousands of dollars less. With that said, if you love the sound of Intellibed and have the money to spend, it’s undeniably a very nice, luxury bed for almost all sleeping positions and body types.
We haven’t tested every Intellibed mattress, but we think it depends on your budget, the types of materials you want, and your sleeping position. The Matrix Grand is great for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers of all sizes who want a neutral, airy, bouncy feel to their bed.
Considering how thick and quality-made they are, these mattresses should last you around a decade or more.
