Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress Overview
You’re probably familiar with the brand Purple –– whether through their mattresses or you’ve laughed at one of their very creative mattress commercials. The ones with the egg test and mom Sasquatch? A classic!
We’re excited to fill you in on the juice details of this one-of-a-kind bed in this Purple Hybrid Mattress review. Purple has delivered a hybrid model that provides more support and durability for all types of sleepers than their flagship bed. While this review will primarily focus on the Purple Hybrid model, we should note they have several different beds to choose from and have linked to their other mattress reviews within this guide.
What we love about the Purple 2 Hybrid mattress:
- We definitely think the Purple 2 Hybrid is worth the money for certain types of sleepers.
- You get the best of both worlds thanks to its hybrid design, and it provides an excellent night of sleep for all types of sleepers.
Here’s a quick note: Purple’s hybrid beds are the same, but they go by different names now. The New Purple 2 now goes by Purple Hybrid, and the New Purple 3 and New Purple 4 are now called the Purple Hybrid Premier.

While the chart above goes a long way in explaining the differences between the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier models, there’s still more to learn. It’s also worth noting the Purple Hybrid made it on our list for the Most Comfortable Mattresses of this year.
How Does the Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress Feel?
The Purple Hybrid mattress has a unique, gel-like feel thanks to the top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on each bed. Hyper-Elastic Polymer is very stretchy, soft, and feels like a Dr. Scholl’s insole.
The majority of the Slumber Yard team members like the feel of Purple beds, but it’s also worth noting that not everybody shares the same sentiment. For some people, the gel-like feel is too weird, or they prefer more traditional innerspring or memory foam beds.
As you lay down on the Purple 2 Hybrid bed, you feel the polymer beneath you compressing and conforming to your body’s shape. It takes a few nights to get used to, but we’ve noticed most people like the feel of it. It kind of feels like you’re floating, and it’s a real pressure-relieving experience.
Purple 2 Hybrid Performance
Firmness
In terms of firmness, it’s hard to rate Purple beds due to the unique top layer. However, we’d give Purple 2 mattress about a medium-firm on our firmness scale, which makes it a good choice for most people, regardless of sleeper style or body type.
If you’re looking for a softer Purple Hybrid mattress, we suggest the Purple Original bed or Purple Hybrid Premier.
Pressure relief
Purple states its special material is “soft where you want it and firm where you need it.” Honestly, we think that’s an accurate way to describe it. The beds are soft and pressure relieving, but you also feel like you’re getting the proper support at all times.
Temperature
All of the Purple Hybrid models are among the best mattresses available in terms of temperature regulation due to two main factors:
- Hyper-Elastic Polymer is a temperature-neutral material. It doesn’t retain heat like a lot of foams. A lot of beds that have a memory foam top layer retain heat and hold on to it so that the bed gets warm and you get sweaty. That doesn’t happen on the Purple Hybrid beds. Even if you tend to sweat while you sleep, the airflow helps to dry you off.
- The Purple Hybrid mattresses also allow for a ton of airflow. It starts with the coils, which in general promote more airflow than dense support foams. It’s easier for air to travel through. The top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer is arranged in a grid formation. Purple specifically designed it like this so that several columns and rows of tiny polymer squares are created.
Basically, you’re sleeping on a bunch of tiny pockets of air. All in all, the New Purple beds belong on the list for Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers.
Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress Construction
The Purple Hybrid Mattress, formerly known as Purple 2, stands at 11″ thick and utilizes pocketed coils as well as Hyper-Elastic Polymer. Here is a breakdown of the bed’s construction:

- Base layer – This bed starts with a 1″ layer of dense polyurethane foam and supports the coil layer above.
- Support layer – A layer of 7.5″ individually encased coils to provide the bed with ample support and a little bit of bounce.
- Transition layer – On top of the coils is a 1/2″ layer of polyurethane foam (not shown above), which serves as a transition layer.
- Comfort layer – Purple uses a 2″ layer of its patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer which functions like a gel or silicone-like material and provides a bulk of the bed’s comfort.
The construction of the Purple 2 Hybrid bed is similar to Purple’s Hybrid Premier models. The only difference is the thickness of the top polymer layer, which differs by model. The Purple 2.0 Hybrid mattress uses 2″ of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, the 3.0 Premier mattress uses 3″, and the 4.0 Premier model uses 4″.
How To Care For Mattress Cover
Wrapping the New Purple 2 mattress is a soft, comfortable, and removable cover. However, like most online mattress covers, do not machine wash it. Rather, if you happen to have a little accident, spot clean Purple 2 mattress cover with a mild detergent and some water.

If you’re a person who often gets dirty or you’re prone to accidents, you may want to think about purchasing Purple’s Mattress Protector, which is machine washable. Or you could always check out popular mattress protectors on Amazon, which tend to be more affordable. Keep in mind, though, that mattress protectors tend to hinder airflow.

Is Purple 2 Hybrid A Good Mattress For Couples?
Purple beds have a unique feel that can be divisive. Some people absolutely love it, and some people find it strange. Partners who have different sleeping preferences should check out our list of the Best Beds For Couples.
If feel isn’t an issue though, we have some good news for you and your sleeping partner. The mattress does a decent job of deadening movement.
Motion Isolation
You would think the Purple Hybrid would not do a good job of this given the bounce from the coils and the responsiveness of the top layer, but the polymer limits motion transfer from one side of the mattress to the other side well.
This means a partner who shares a bed with an active sleeper won’t be disturbed by their movements throughout the night. No one wants to be jarred awake every time their partner switches sleeping positions or gets up to go to the bathroom. Good motion isolation translates to a better night’s sleep.
Edge Support

Additionally, the Purple Hybrid mattresses excel when it comes to edge support. It’s much improved over the Original Purple mattress. This is because Purple uses dense foam side rails around the perimeter of the Hybrid models. There’s little compression around the edges, so you never feel as if you’re going to roll off the bed.
This is an important subject for couples who share a smaller size bed or that prefer not to cuddle. Good edge support means there’s more useful surface area for partners to spread out and be comfortable.
What Does the Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress Cost?
The Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress lands land near the higher-end of the online mattress industry in terms of pricing. The base Purple Hybrid is the cheapest out of the three new models, followed by the Purple 3 Hybrid Premier and then the Purple 4 Hybrid Premier. Here’s how pricing breaks down by size for the base Purple Hybrid mattress:
- The Purple 3 Hybrid Premier mattress ranges from $2,300 for a Twin XL to $3,300 for a King size.
- The Purple 4 Hybrid Premier mattress is an even larger step up, ranging from $3,000 for a Twin XL to $4,100 for a King.
If that is above your budget, check out our list of the Best Mattresses Under $1,000.
Is There A Purple Hybrid Mattress Discount Code?
Unfortunately, Purple doesn’t offer coupon codes and promo codes often. Occasionally, you will see a $100 off sale. However, most of the time it’s a promotion for a free gift (pillow, sheets, etc.) with each mattress purchase. Check the Purple website to see what sort of promotion the company is currently offering.

Overall, we really enjoy the Purple Hybrid Mattress and the addition of pocketed coils to the base layer. The company made some nice improvements over the Original Purple bed, and there’s a reason why the new models made our list for the Best Hybrid Mattresses.
Bottom line, if you’re tired of the traditional innerspring or memory foam mattresses out there, we highly recommend giving Purple Hybrid Mattress a try. We think it’s suitable for all body types, most sleeper types, and offers a comfortable gel-like feeling, unlike any other mattress.
And yes, we know that Purple mattresses come with an expensive price tag. But we definitely think they’re worth it.
Purple Hybrid vs. Original Purple Mattress
Let’s not forget about the flagship Purple mattress, which is what started it all for the company. The main mattress has two layers of polyurethane foam and a 2″ layer of the company’s special Hyper-Elastic Polymer. The flagship Purple is the most affordable model by far. Read our full Original Purple mattress review for more details. A couple of years ago, Purple introduced three hybrid models (formerly known as the New Purple 2, New Purple 3, and New Purple 4. Purple Hybrid Ratings
- BBB Rating: A+
- Amazon Reviews: Amazon reviews are sparse for the Purple Hybrid, likely because this mattress was previously known as the Purple 2/3/4. The mattress does have a 4.0 out of 5.0 review score on Amazon. Customers were both positive and negative regarding the support and feel of the mattress, probably because it is different and takes some getting used to. There was also a complaint regarding the weight of the mattress, but overall the reviews are good.

The Purple 2 and the Purple Hybrid mattresses are pretty similar, but not the same thing. The Hybrid mattress is softer and a little than bouncier than the Purple 2 thanks to the additional two inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
The Purple 2 Hybrid mattress is good for side sleepers. The top polymer layer cradles your hips and shoulders. Sure, the Purple 4 Hybrid Premier has a thicker top layer, but if you’re a side sleeper on a budget, the Purple 2 is a good fit.
You should expect to keep your Purple Hybrid mattress for 7 to 10 years. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid and the coil layers make it an extremely durable bed.
We have to admit, the naming of the Purple beds is a little confusing. But it’s really pretty simple. The number represents the thickness of the top layer of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. The Purple 2 has a 2-inch thick layer, Purple 3 has a 3-inch layer, and Purple 4 has a 4-inch layer.
We think the Purple 2 Hybrid mattress is worth the money. We’re not saying it’s the most affordable mattress out there, but the support and comfort make it worth it. You cannot get that unique gel-like feel anywhere else than Purple.
