Plank Mattress Review

Brooklyn Bedding is an excellent mattress company, and its Plank mattress isn’t an exception. This flippable mattress has different firmness profiles on each side of the bed and is made in the United States.

If you have specific questions, you can use the links below to take you to sections of our Plank review:

    Honest Plank Video Mattress Review

    Plank Mattress Construction And Design

This mattress has four foam layers and totals 11.25″ thick. Starting from the firm side and working down, here’s how the mattress is constructed:

    • Firm-side top layer — 3/4″ of quilted soft proprietary foam for supportive comfort
    • Transition layer — 2″ of TitanFlex support foam to provide a transition in between foams
    • Main support layer — 7″ of high-density poly foam which will provide the bulk of the bed’s support
    • Soft-side top layer — 1.5″ of quilted soft proprietary foam for more plush support
    plank mattress layers

The primary difference between the two sides comes down to the thickness of the soft proprietary foam the bed uses for its two end pieces. The firm side has 3/4″ of soft foam and a layer of firm support foam underneath, while the soft side has 1.5″ of soft foam on top of the bed’s main support layer.

You can purchase a cooling top panel for your Plank mattress. We didn’t test out the cooling model, but the materials are similar to what you find in Brooklyn Bedding’s Aurora mattress. It does raise the cost a bit ($200 more for a twin and $250 more for a queen/king), but it’s a good option for those who tend to sleep hot.

    Plank Mattress Cover

Wrapping the four foam layers is a non-removable quilted cover. Overall, it’s soft, comfortable and gives the bed a premium look.

If you spill something on the bed, the company recommends you spot clean the cover with a mild detergent and some water. Alternatively, if keeping the cover clean is super important to you, you may want to check out the Plank Mattress protector or popular mattress protectors on Amazon.

    Sizes And Dimensions

    • Twin XL — 38″ x 80″

Brooklyn Bedding Plank Feel And Firmness

Plank is double-sided, meaning you can sleep on either side of the bed. Further, the Plank mattress comes in two firmness levels. In other words, one side is firmer than the other. This allows consumers to test both sides of the bed and decide which one suits their sleeping habits. Alternatively, you can use both sides to extend the life of the mattress. Here’s a video that explains how this works:

The Plank Bed has a firm, neutral feel on the softer side and a firmer one on the flip side. It doesn’t feel viscous like memory foam — instead, it feels like classic responsive foam. The top layers on both sides are still soft and comfortable, but you don’t sink into the bed. You sleep more on top of the mattress, and your hips stay in horizontal alignment with the rest of your body.

The top layers are also responsive, meaning they pop back into place almost immediately after pressure is released (unlike memory foam).

Moving on, we think the firm side of the mattress comes in around a firm on our firmness scale. Similarly, we think the soft side lands on the firmer side of the spectrum, around a medium-firm on the firmness scale.

    plank mattress firmness

Why did Plank make the mattress so firm? Honestly, the company’s goal was to create a firm, durable bed. In fact, the company uses the tagline “The firmest, flattest, healthiest way to sleep”. If you prefer a softer mattress and want to stick with Brooklyn Bedding, check out the Bowery, Signature or Aurora mattresses.

Is Plank A Good Mattress For Couples?

Yes, as long both partners are primarily back and stomach sleepers. If that’s the case, the Plank is a viable option for couples.

    Motion Isolation

First, the Plank bed limits motion transfer extremely well. It passed our tests easily. This is good news for people who share a bed with an active sleeper. A bed like the Plank that isolates motion well means you’ll feel less of your partner’s movements, which will help you get a more restful night’s sleep.

    Edge Support

The Plank mattress provides superb edge support. In fact, it’s one of the best beds we’ve ever tested in this department. As you inch towards the perimeter of the bed, you always feel properly supported.

    Plank Mattress Temperature Regulation

Ultimately, we think the Plank mattress sleeps temperature neutral. The Plank bed doesn’t use any special cooling textiles or materials, but given its firmness level and the fact that you sleep more on top of the bed should help prevent you from warming up at night.

If you sleep hot, check out our list of the best cooling mattresses.

    Plank Mattress Sleeper Type Analysis

plank mattress review sleeping positions firmness

    Side Sleepers

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank is not ideal for side sleepers. As mentioned above, both sides are firm and don’t offer much pressure relief. If you spend a lot of time on your side, we’d recommend checking out our list of the Best Beds For Side Sleepers.

    Back And Stomach Sleepers

The Plank bed-in-a-box is an ideal option for back and stomach sleepers. The bed provides more than enough support for these types of sleepers. When laying on your back or stomach, your hips and trunk never sink-in or dip down to the point where your spine is no longer in proper alignment.

    Combo Sleepers

Combo sleepers may find they spend more time on their stomach or back than on their side. As mentioned, the Plank is a bit too firm for a side sleeper, potentially creating pressure points on shoulders and hips. The one positive is, the firmer mattress will encourage sleepers to spend more time on their back, which may be a better sleep posture.

    Petite

The foam has a neutral feeling that may feel too firm for a petite sleeper. Petite body types looking for a firm mattress may be happy with the Plank mattress, but everyone else should find a different mattress.

    Average

The Plank is best for people of average body type. The foam provides the right support without being overly firm or mushy. As for durability, an average-weight person shouldn’t put as much wear and tear on the mattress as a heavyset individual.

    Heavy

Normally, we point heavy sleepers towards beds that contain coils because coils are more durable and supportive. If you’re a large body type, we’d say hybrid and coil mattresses would be more ideal, but if you’re dead set on an all-foam mattress, the Plank is one of the better options out there.

Plank Mattress Pricing And Coupon Code

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank lands in the middle of the bed-in-a-box industry in terms of price. Considering its high-quality construction and versatility, we think Plank is a good value. Here’s how MSRP pricing breaks down by size:

    SizePrice (MSRP)
    Twin$699
    Twin XL$749
    Full$799
    Queen$999
    King / Cal King$1,249

However, those are just the MSRP prices. Plank is aggressive when it comes to sales, discounts and promo codes. The company is almost always running a promotion. Check the box on the right to see what kind of discount you can get.

    How we rate mattresses

Overall, there’s a lot to like about the Plank mattress, however, it’s not going to be the right bed for everybody. We see it being best for a certain type of person. First, you have to like or need a firm bed. Next, you have to sleep primarily on your back or stomach. If you meet those criteria, we think you’ll enjoy the mattress.

    Other Beds From Brooklyn Bedding

    Plank Mattress vs Brooklyn Aurora

The Aurora isn’t flippable, but that might be okay with you if you sleep hot because it is one of the coolest beds on the market. It’s even too cool for some people because the cooling cover isn’t removable. It comes in soft, medium and firm. Plank’s price ranges between $699 and $1,249. The Aurora mattress has a higher price point at $999 to $1,999. The Aurora also adds an extra layer that includes coils for a more luxurious, supportive feel. Plank’s firmness is best for back and stomach sleepers. Aurora is softer and best for side sleepers who need pressure relief.

    Plank Mattress vs Brooklyn Bowery

The big thing that makes the Bowery a winner is that it’s budget-friendly. If you want a high-quality yet budget mattress from the company, it’s your best bet. It’s a medium of the firmness scale and has a soft, neutral foam feel.

    Plank Mattress Ratings

    • BBB Rating: A+
    • Amazon Reviews: Amazon reviewers awarded the Plank By Brooklyn Bedding with four out of five stars. Customers liked the firmness of the mattress and the fact it has two sides. The few complaints are due to an incorrect size being shipped, or customer service not being helpful.

    Comparing Plank vs Other Brands

    Plank vs Purple Mattress

Purple is one of the most popular foam mattresses available. Plank’s price ranges between $699 and $1,249. Purple’s twin mattress is $50 less at $649, but the price gets more expensive for a full mattress ($999), queen mattress ($1,149) and king ($1,449 to $1,598). The Plank mattress has one more layer at four to Purple’s three. Purple is also ideal for all sleeper types.

    Plank vs Allswell Mattress

Allswell is Walmart’s affordable venture into foam mattresses. Allswell is less expensive and uses coils for more durability. Both Plank and Allswell are ideal for back and stomach sleepers.
