Puffy is one of the more popular foam mattresses available online. It was first popularized by the Ellen Show back in 2017 and has since really taken off. Puffy is an affordable, all-foam mattress that’s popular for a reason. We think the Puffy mattress is a good option for most people if you weigh under 230 lbs –– we rate a medium on our soft-to-firm scale.

Puffy offers three mattresses –– the Puffy mattress, Puffy Lux Hybrid, and Puffy Royal. This Puffy mattress review will focus on the flagship model. Here’s what you need to know about it:

  • The Puffy Mattress is the most affordable option available from the company’s line of mattresses.
  • It performs pretty well in every category we rate –– motion isolation, temperature regulation and edge support.
  • The Puffy bed has three layers of foam, all of which are CertiPUR-US certified (which means they don’t have harmful chemicals.)
  • It comes with a removable and machine washable cover, making spills and drool stains much easier to clean.

Puffy Mattress Firmness And Feel

How firm is a Puffy mattress?

In terms of firmness, the Puffy bed is about a medium on our soft-to-firm scale. All in all, the Puffy mattress finds a pretty nice balance between support and pressure relief. The memory foam layer that tops the bed contours to your body. When you lay on it, you’ll sink into the Puffy mattress, but the transition layer keeps you from going in too far.

puffy mattress review firmness and feel

Keep in mind that firmness is somewhat subjective. The heavier a person is, the softer they will perceive the mattress to be and vice versa. Make sure you keep in mind your body type and preferences when shopping for a mattress.

What does the Puffy bed feel like?

When you lay down on the Puffy mattress, you know it’s memory foam. But we wouldn’t consider Puffy to be a pure-play memory foam mattress. In our opinion, the bed now has a more blended, soft foam feel. Instead of a thick, dense memory foam feel, the top layer of the Puffy mattress has more of a light, airy memory foam feel.

The top layer of Cooling Cloud Foam resembles memory foam, although it’s slightly different than what you’re probably used to. You can still feel a little bit of that top layer that mimics memory foam, but it’s not an overwhelming sensation anymore.

Ultimately, Puffy sort of sits in-between that of a memory foam feel and a neutral-foam feel. As such, we’d say Puffy is a very safe pick for people who aren’t exactly sure what type of feel they want. We think most consumers out there will find the bed very accommodating.

Puffy Mattress Design and Construction

The Puffy bed is made of three proprietary foam layers and measures out to be 10” thick. Below, you can find an explanation of the mattress’s construction.

puffy mattress layers
  • Base layer – For its foundation, the mattress uses a 6″ layer of firm support foam.
  • Transition layer – In the middle is a 2″ layer of what the company calls its “Climate Comfort Foam,” a proprietary foam that effectively serves as a transition layer between the dense base layer and the top comfort layer.
  • Comfort layer – 2″ of the company’s special “Cooling Cloud Foam,” a proprietary foam that has gel-infused viscose polyurethane foam.
  • Removable cover –– The cover is stain resistant and also machine washable. The company technically uses the term “zip-n-wash” to describe it, which we interpret as a cover that you can unzip and throw in your washer to remove dirt, germs and bacteria. A machine-washable cover is pretty rare in the industry.

The top layer is manufactured with Puffy’s Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) process. Essentially, it’s a fancy way of saying that the company’s manufacturing practices are environmentally friendly. The foams are made in a closed chamber, which helps minimize process emissions and cut out harmful chemicals.

In fact, all three layers of foam in the Puffy mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. This means that they do not contain harmful chemicals and pass CertiPUR-US standards for foam content, emissions, and durability. Specifically, Puffy says the foam in the mattress is free of formaldehyde, ozone depleters, heavy metals, phthalates, and TCEP flame retardants.

Puffy Mattress Sleeper Type Analysis

puffy mattress review back sleeper
  • Side sleepers

The Puffy mattress provides a good amount of pressure relief for side sleepers. The top layer is soft-to-the-touch and somewhat functions like memory foam. As such, you’ll notice that the Cooling Cloud Foam cradles your hips and shoulders well.

Generally speaking, the soft cradle sensation that Puffy provides is exactly what side sleepers will want to look for. Sometimes when a mattress is too firm, side sleepers will experience discomfort around their hips and shoulders.

  • Back and stomach sleepers

We think the Puffy bed is suitable for all sleeping positions. In terms of back and stomach sleepers, the mattress provides a good amount of support under your lower back and trunk.

However, it’s important to note, the statements above are in reference to petite and medium-sized people. People who weigh over 230 pounds, might not get the support they need with this all-foam bed.

  • Combo sleepers

Yes, as you can probably guess, we think the Puffy mattress will work for combination sleepers as well. The bed is accommodating regardless of how often you switch between your side, back, and stomach.

Body Type Analysis

When it comes to mattresses, your weight is very important. The same bed can feel quite different to various-sized people. We generally write through an average-sized individual’s perspective, but we also make sure to reference other body types later in the post.

  • Petite

More petite-sized individuals (less than 150 lbs.) will feel like most mattresses are on the firm side since they exert very little pressure onto the bed’s surface (i.e., they sleep more on top of the mattress). The Puffy is right in the middle of the firmness scale, which should provide a good balance between pressure relief and support for petite and average-sized sleepers.

  • Average

We consider an average body type to be 150 to 250 lbs. People who fall into this category will love the comfort and pressure relief that the Puffy bed offers. They will also get all the support they need from the middle support foam layers. Because Puffy is such a versatile bed when it comes to sleeping positions, we would say that if you’re an average-sized person, you’ll be happy on a Puffy bed.

  • Heavy

Generally speaking, heavy people (250+ pounds) will feel like most mattresses are on the soft side since they exert more force onto the bed’s surface and, as a result, sink into the top layers more than smaller-sized people.

We do not think that the Puffy mattress is ideal for exceptionally heavy individuals due to its all-foam 10″ construction. This is not a knock against Puffy, by the way, or a comment on the quality of the bed. We say this about the majority of all-foam bed-in-a-box mattresses.

Typically, we almost always recommend big folks go with a hybrid or innerspring bed that contains coils. That’s because coils have proven to be more durable and provide more support than the dense poly foams that all-foam beds (like Puffy) use for their foundations.

Puffy Mattress Pricing

In terms of suggested price, the Puffy mattress is about average for the bed-in-a-box industry (maybe a tad bit higher).

SIZEPRICEAVERAGE
Twin$699$810
Twin XL$949$1,161
Full$1,099$1,184
Queen$1,249$1,390
King$1,449$1,751
Cal King$1,449$1,833

Is There a Puffy Mattress Discount Code?

The suggested prices are a bit deceiving. Like a lot of bed-in-a-box companies, Puffy is very aggressive when it comes to deals and discounts. The company is almost always running some sort of sale or promotion. You can typically expect to take $250-$300 off the sticker price. You can check Puffy.com for current promotions or check the discount box on the right-hand side of the screen to see what you can save.

Puffy Mattress Performance

Pressure relief

A big draw for the Puffy mattress is in the pressure relief department. The memory foam layers allow the body to conform to the shape of your body and avoid forming pressure points.

This is an especially important thing to look out for if you’re a side sleeper or live with chronic pain. When a mattress is too firm, side sleepers will often feel pressure and discomfort around their shoulders and hips. You won’t find that with the Puffy bed.

Temperature regulation

Traditionally, memory foam is known to trap and retain heat. As such, you might assume that the Puffy mattress sleeps hot due to its top layer, but actually, we found that it sleeps more temperature neutral.

The comfort layer of the Puffy mattress is infused with a cooling gel to keep it from trapping in heat. But that doesn’t mean it’s a cooling mattress. You won’t find yourself warming up on the bed, but it won’t actively cool you down. If you’re a hot sleeper, you can check our list for the Best Cooling Mattresses in the market.

puffy mattress review temperature regulation scale

Responsiveness

The other nice thing about the mattress is that we found it very easy to switch between sleeping positions. In other words, our testing team didn’t notice much resistance when moving around and shifting positions. This isn’t always the case with beds that contain memory foam top layers.

Edge support

If your bed is supportive around the perimeter, you can sleep comfortably on every inch of the mattress with your significant other or loved one. Luckily, we’ve found Puffy to be fairly supportive when you’re lying on the edge. In fact, it performs better than other all-foam beds.

You won’t get as much edge support as you would with one of the best innerspring mattresses, but it’s still more than we expected with an all-foam bed. The increase in edge support is a new addition to the most recent Puffy mattress redesign.

Motion transfer

The Puffy bed also excels when it comes to motion isolation. For people who don’t live and breathe mattresses like the Slumber Yard team, motion isolation refers to a bed’s ability to deaden movement. This is a big deal if you share a bed with someone who moves a lot.

video thumbnail

Most all-foam beds do a good job at absorbing movement, and Puffy is no exception. We tested this by placing a half-full glass of water on one side of the bed, and then we proceeded to roll around near the glass.

Is it good for couples?

All things considered, we think the Original Puffy mattress is a viable option for folks who share a bed. It performs well in terms of edge support and motion isolation. If you share a bed with a partner who tosses and turns or gets out of bed at night, they likely won’t wake you up. Additionally, if you’re not the cuddling type, you’ll both be able to take advantage of the entire surface of the bed, right up to the edge.

Other Puffy Mattresses

This Puffy review was centered around the flagship Puffy model, but we’d be remiss not to mention the other beds offered by the brand. Here is a quick rundown of each Puffy Mattress model and how they compare to the original.

  • Puffy Lux

Similar to the flagship model, Puffy Lux also has an all-foam construction, but it’s about 2″ thicker thanks to an additional layer of foam on the top of the mattress. It also has more of a memory foam feel if you’re into a slow responding and viscous mattress profile. You can also purchase the Puffy Lux hybrid version, which offers more support and durability than both Puffy and Puffy Lux. Puffy Lux is a more expensive mattress (around $200 more for the all-foam puffy Lux).

  • Puffy Royal

As one of the thickest all-foam mattresses on the market, Puffy Royal is the brand’s top-tier product and stands at about 14″ tall. It has a similar feel to the original Puffy (mixed foam instead of memory foam) and lands around a medium to medium-soft on our scale. It’s the most expensive bed in their lineup, and like Puffy Lux, Puffy Royal is also available in a hybrid model.

Puffy Company Policies

Puffy’s company policies are similar to what most companies offer. There is free shipping and free returns. You have a 101-night trial. Most companies fall within the 100 to 180-day range. Some brands, like Nectar, give you an entire year. But don’t worry, 101 days is plenty of time to decide if a Puffy bed is right for you.

Unlike other brands, Puffy does offer a lifetime warranty. It’s not unheard of, but it’s definitely not the standard. Most mattresses have around a 15-year warranty.

Puffy Mattress Review Verdict

Overall, we can see why Puffy has become so popular. The Puffy bed is moderately priced (after discount), accommodates people in all sleeping positions, and performs well in almost every category. Plus, we think most people will like the feel of the mattress since it sort of toes the line between memory foam and neutral foam.

How Puffy Compares To Other Brands

  • Puffy vs Casper

You saw Puffy featured on Ellen, but you have also heard a ton of people rave about the Casper mattress, so which do you pick? In the Puffy vs Casper debate, first, decide which feel you think you’d prefer more. Puffy contains memory foam which gives the bed more of a mixed foam feel, while Casper feels like a standard neutral-foam bed that’s quick to respond and slightly bland (in a good way). You’ll also want to determine your budget; they have similar retail prices, but Puffy usually ends up being more affordable after discounts are applied.

  • Puffy vs Purple

The Puffy and Purple mattresses are noticeably different. While you get a blended, neutral-foam feel with Puffy, you’ll immediately notice the gel-like feel when you lay on a Purple bed. We also have to mention that Puffy is generally more affordable than Purple, especially after discounts. When you’re shopping around, keep in mind your budget, what feel you want and your sleeping preferences.

  • Puffy vs Lull

The Lull mattress is an all-foam 10” thick bed. It has fewer layers of foam than Puffy, but the support foam is considerably thicker. The feel of the Lull bed falls somewhere between standard poly foam and memory foam –– which isn’t for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Puffy really a good mattress?

The short answer is yes. The Puffy mattress offers excellent pressure relief and plenty of comfort. It has a medium firmness, which means that almost anyone can sleep on it. Best of all, the Puffy mattress is pretty affordable too.

Which Puffy mattress is best?

Determining which Puffy mattress is best for you, will depend on your preferences, body type and sleeper style. The Puffy original is pretty versatile, but we wouldn’t recommend it for people who weigh over 250 pounds. The Puffy Lux is great for side sleepers who want more pressure relief. The Puffy Royal is their luxury mattress, so if you’re looking for something that’s comfortable and high-end, this is the mattress for you.

How long will the Puffy mattress last?

All foam mattresses, in general, have a lifespan of around 8-10 years. However, if you don’t weigh much, the mattress will probably last longer. How long your Puffy mattress will last depends on your weight and how often you sleep on it. For instance, a guest bed will last longer than a bed you use every night.

Can you flip a Puffy mattress?

No. The Puffy mattress is not designed to be flippable as each foam layer does a specific job. The top foam layer needs to be what you sleep on. On occasion, you can rotate the mattress if you feel it is necessary, but you shouldn’t flip the Puffy mattress.

Does the Puffy mattress sag?

Admittedly, all-foam mattresses do tend to sag faster than a bed with a coil support system. So there is a chance that your Puffy mattress might eventually sag. That said, the lifetime warranty Puffy offers means that you can replace it if your bed starts to sag.

  • How We Test The Mattresses

The Slumber Yard has been around since the beginning of the bed-in-a-box craze. Our team has personally tested over 175 mattresses so far, and we keep more than 150 beds in our office so we can compare them (and take afternoon naps).

When testing mattresses, we evaluate the following factors:

    • Construction: We cut mattresses open to see what’s inside and how it’s made.
    • Feel: We check if it has a stuck-in-the-mud memory foam feel, or if it’s more of a neutral foam or a plush pillow top, etc.
    • Firmness: We have our own firmness scale and evaluate how that may vary depending on your body and sleeper type.
    • Pressure relief: We test what’s the sweet spot for different body and sleeper types.
    • Support and how that changes by body/sleeper type
    • Edge Support: This is important for couples who share a bed. Would you roll out of the bed or can you sleep confidently close to the edges?
    • Motion Isolation: We use the water glass test to see how the bed fares with motion transfer. This is another important factor for couples who don’t want to wake up when they move.
    • Temperature Regulation: We use a temperature gun to evaluate if the bed warms up, stays neutral or actively cools while sleeping.
    • Noise: This could be an issue in beds with coils or innerspring.
    • Off-Gassing: Some beds could have a smell for a few weeks after unpacking, and we try to warn you about it.
    • Company policies: We also take into account policies such as shipping, returns, trial period and warranty.
    • Value: We look at a bed’s price in the context of what it offers in terms of features and quality of materials and construction.
