Saatva Classic Mattress Overview
Traditional innerspring mattresses like the one you or your parents slept on as a kid are reliable, but often lack pressure relieving comfort or ample motion isolation as all-foam beds. Saatva Mattress, on the other hand, took your classic innerspring system, added a layer of pocketed coils, and a plush pillow top in the comfort layer to give their mattress a more modern upgrade.
And boy did it pay off — Saatva has made a reputation for themselves as being a premium online mattress brand who offers high-quality beds at reasonable price points. It’s not the best bed for penny pinchers, but if you’re willing to spend over $1,000 for a nice bed, we think this one may be worth it!
Because of how lengthy and in-depth this review is, we’ve provided the following links to jump to any section you wish to start with:
The Saatva Classic mattress (aka “Saatva”) is available in three comforts (aka firmness) options (plush soft, luxury firm and firm). The luxury firm option is the best seller. As such, that’s the option we will primarily be referring to throughout this review.
Honest YouTube Review Of Saatva Classic Mattress
We realize not everyone likes to read about beds so if you fall into that category, here is a quick review video of the Saatva Classic mattress.
Saatva Mattress Construction & Design
The Saatva mattress uses four layers, starting with two layers of coils followed by another two layers of foam cushioning. Here’s an overview of the construction:
- Top layer: Euro-top for fluffy and plush comfort
- Middle layer: Memory foam right underneath the cover for additional more pressure relief and coziness
- Middle layer: Individually-wrapped pocketed coils which are better at isolating movement than standard innersprings
- Bottom layer: Thick steel coil innerspring system for maximum support
Overall, we are impressed with the construction of this bed. The company uses high-quality materials, and the dual layers of coils will help extend the life of the mattress.
Saatva also gives you the option to select your mattress height. You can choose between a 11.5″ custom slim model and a 14.5″ premier luxury model. Both options feel the same. It’s more of a personal aesthetic decision. The extra height is added to the innerspring system at the bottom of the bed.
Organic Cotton Mattress Cover
Wrapping the bed is a non-removable, organic cotton cover that is antimicrobial. It’s fairly soft and gives the bed a premium, luxurious appearance. If you happen to spill during wine night or breakfast in bed, take care of the stain by spot cleaning it with mild detergent and water.
Feel And Firmness
After completing our Saatva Mattress review, we determined this bed has more of a traditional innerspring type feel thanks to its two layers of coils. The bed is supportive and has some bounce, however, the Euro pillow top gives the bed an element of comfort not found with older innerspring mattresses. We also think this mattress is supportive and responsive, and we found it easy to switch between sleeping positions.
Saatva is particularly accommodating because it comes available in three different firmness levels, making it suitable for all sleeper types. Here is a breakdown of how we rated the firmness profile of each model:
- “Plush Soft” model was rated around a medium. It’s somewhat soft-to-the-touch and provides a decent amount of pressure relief for your hips and shoulders.
- “Luxury Firm” model came in around a medium-firm on the firmness scale and offers a bit more support than their Plush Soft model.
- “Firm” was rated around a firm on our scale. The firm model that Saatva offers is best for heavy individuals, people that sleep strictly on their back and stomach, or folks who need/want extra lumbar support.
For those of you wondering about the differences between the three firmness options, we have you covered. Above, is a video Jeff on our team published regarding the feel and firmness of each model.
Is Saatva A Good Mattress For Couples?
When evaluating mattresses for couples, there are two important factors to consider: edge support and motion isolation. Here’s how Saatva stacks up in those key areas.
On the positive side, the Saatva mattress has great edge support. If you’re wondering what edge support is and why we mention it in our reviews, read What Is Edge Support to learn!
As we mentioned earlier, the bed has a firm layer of foam around the perimeter of the bed to ensure sleepers never feel as if they’re going to roll off. Solid edge support also means the bed will have a large sleeping surface because the edges won’t compress all that much.
While the edge support is solid, we found that the bed is average when it comes to motion isolation. This shouldn’t come as a huge shock though considering the bed uses dual layers of coils.
Overall though, we don’t think it will be a major issue. At the end of the day, the Saatva mattress is still going to be better than your worn-out bed in this department. Plus, we haven’t heard any complaints from customers regarding this subject.
Saatva Mattress Sleeper Types
Saatva can handle all sleeping positions, including back, stomach, side and combo. Here’s an overview of each sleeper type and how the different Saatva mattresses will feel.
The luxury firm and firm options will be a little too firm for strict side sleeping. These models do not provide enough pressure relief for your hips and shoulders when you’re on your side.
Instead, we’d recommend strict side sleepers go with the plush soft model. They layer this model with softer and more conforming foams so that your hips and shoulders feel like they’re being cradled a little more.
Back And Stomach Sleepers
For back and stomach sleepers the bed provides a ton of support under your hips, trunk and lower back.
The coils do a great job of compressing but also providing a little push-back. This means you’ll sink in a little through that top pillow layer but never to the point where your spine is no longer properly aligned. We’d recommend strict back and stomach sleepers stick with either the luxury firm or firm options.
If you’re a combo sleeper, the plush soft and luxury firm models are your best bet. If you’re primarily a stomach or back sleeper but you occasionally end up on your side, you might want to go with the luxury firm bed.
If you tend to favor your side but end up on your stomach or back throughout the night, you might look into the plush soft model first. Combination sleepers need to think of their dominant sleeping position and match the mattress to that position.
Body Type Analysis
Your sleeper type isn’t the only factor that impacts how a mattress feels to you. Your weight also plays an important role. Here’s how the bed will feel to you, depending on your body type.
Petite Body Types
Smaller individuals (less than 150 pounds) will feel like most mattresses are on the firmer side. The opposite is true for these body types because they won’t sink in as much and will lay more on top of the bed. We’ve found this to be particularly true with Saatva mattresses, so we’d recommend going with the plush soft model if you’re petite.
Average Body Types
It’s easier for average body types (150-250 pounds) to find a mattress that feels true to its firmness description. In our reviews, we talk about mattresses from an average sleeper’s perspective, so keep that in mind as you read through.
Heavy Body Types
In general, heavy people will feel like most beds are on the softer side of the spectrum. That’s because people over 250 pounds exert a lot of extra pressure, stress and weight onto a bed and thus will sink down into the top layers more than the average size person. The Saatva HD, one of their other mattress models, is specifically made for heavy people.
Saatva Bed Pricing
The Saatva mattress is priced fairly affordably. A queen-size mattress costs about $1,500 MSRP, which is slightly more than the average online bed. However, given the high-quality construction of the mattress and extras like free white-glove delivery, we think it’s an excellent value. It’s a nicer bed than the two and three-layer foam mattresses that are priced in the same range.
Is There A Saatva Mattress Coupon Or Discount Code?
Unfortunately, there isn’t an evergreen Saatva discount or promo code. However, there are occasionally sales around major holidays. We’ve seen up to $200 off before. You can check current prices and promotions on Saatva.com or take a look at our best mattress deals.
While the Saatva technically does not have any special cooling technology built-into the bed, we do feel like this mattress will sleep on the cooler side for two reasons.
First, the bed has two layers of coils, which allow for more airflow throughout the bed compared to dense support foams, which are known for somewhat trapping heat.
Second, all comfort levels land on the firmer side of the spectrum. This means the majority of sleepers will sleep more on top of the mattress rather than it. This should help sleepers from feeling like the mattress is hugging them and thus less heat being trapped by the top layer of foam.

We are big fans of the Saatva Luxury Mattress. It has a sturdy, durable construction, it’s available in multiple comfort levels and it accommodates all body types. Saatva Company Policies
Before you make a decision, you need to know that the beds do not arrive compressed and rolled-up in a tiny box (i.e. it technically should not be considered a bed-in-a-box). Here are Saatva’s policies:
- Risk-free trial period: 120 nights
- Warranty: 15-25 years
- Shipping: Free, with white-glove delivery
- Returns: $99
The company also offers a Fairness Replacement Option. Basically, instead of you sending back your bed to be repaired, you can purchase a brand-new Saatva mattress at 30-75 percent of the original purchase price (depending on how long you’ve had the original bed).
Let’s switch it up and talk a little bit about the other beds on the market that compete with the Saatva heavily. These are giants in the industry that should also be really solid purchases.
There are a few notable differences between Saatva and Casper. Casper mattresses have a soft, neutral-foam feel, whereas Saatva beds have an innerspring feel. With Saatva, you can choose how firm or soft you’d like your mattress, but Casper’s original model only has one firmness option. The original Casper is cheaper than Saatva, but its hybrid model is comparable price-wise. Read our Saatva vs. Casper breakdown for more information.
Instead of a traditional innerspring construction, the Purple mattress has a proprietary material in its mattresses called Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which provides a unique gel-like feel. Also, Saatva offers three different firmness levels, while Purple has just one. In terms of price, Saatva mattresses cost more than the Original Purple but not as much as Purple’s Hybrid models. Learn more in our Saatva vs. Purple comparison.
Unlike the Saatva innerspring mattress, the Layla mattress is a soft memory foam bed that’s flippable and double-sided. It’s also a more affordable, which is a plus for budget-conscious shoppers. While the Layla mattress will suit all sleeper types, it isn’t the best fit for heavy body types — the Saatva HD is the clear winner in that category.
