Given the breadth and depth of this review, it can be a little difficult to navigate quickly. To make things a little less painful for you, here’s a jump-to section with links for the various segments of the review.
Simmons is an established brand (one of the biggest) with a massive selection of mattresses. They predominantly sell through mattress retail stores, including Mattress Firm, Macy’s, and US-Mattress.com. Here are the policies if you order through US-Mattress.
You get free delivery, which means your mattress will be hand delivered to your home by a local carrier. In some cases they will bring the mattress into your house and set it up for you. In other cases, they will deliver it to your door, but it’s on you to set it up from there.
Regardless, unlike Casper and Leesa, this is not a bed-in-a-box mattress that’s compressed inside a cardboard box. It will show up as a full-size (i.e. not vacuum sealed) mattress and is ready to sleep on as soon as you put it on your bed frame.
Keep in mind that you will need to be home for this delivery. Starting from the day you get your new mattress, you will have a 120-night trial period to be absolutely sure that you are comfortable with your Beautyrest Silver.
If within this time you decide that this isn’t the best bed for you, you can return your mattress for a refund, but a fee around $139 will be charged for processing (company jargon for transportation and labor fees). So basically, not free returns like many bed-in-a-box companies.
If you fall in love with your Beautyrest and decide to keep it, you’ll be covered by a 10-year warranty through Simmons.
The Beautyrest Silver collection is surprisingly affordable considering the thickness and quality of these beds. Here’s a breakdown by size.
|Full / Full XL||$649|
|King / Cal King||$899|
Beautyrest Silver is the entry level line of beds from Simmons. They also have Beautyrest Black and Platinum, which are pricey, but promise more premium features and materials—they are your quintessential luxury mattresses. To be honest, the Silver seems just fine and we’re not convinced the other models are worth spending more on.
If you’re looking for a coupon code for Beautyrest Silver, you most likely will not find one, but you can check our Mattress Coupons page for other deals that we found today.
The Beautyrest Silver is a hybrid mattress that has layers of coils, memory foam, and proprietary foam. It starts out with a 4” base of pocketed coil technology. Next is a layer of gel memory foam, then some “GelTouch Foam.”
Then there’s a layer of “AirCool Foam” for airflow, followed by a layer of “AirFeel Foam” for pressure relief, both of which are proprietary materials. The pillow top is made with “DualCool technology fiber,” and actually has silver sewn throughout (hence the name), which has antimicrobial properties.
The sum total of all of this is a 14″ thick mattress with a confusing blend of various types of foam. What you need to know is that it’s thick, burly, and built to a higher standard than a lot of these mattresses under $1,000.
The cover of this bed is really nice. It’s soft and quilted, and it’s what really gives this bed its plush feeling. Overall, this is just a quality looking bed with its paisley patterned cover and plaid patterned side cover. We know it sounds strange, but if you don’t like it, you can cover it up with extra deep sheets.
Like I stated in the section above, the DualCool technology fiber is made with actual silver, which helps to draw heat away from the body and prevents mildew, odor-causing bacteria, and mold. This keeps the bed looking, and—more importantly—smelling, best.
Within the Simmons Beautyrest Silver line, there are multiple mattresses, one of which is Kenosha Place III.
The Kenosha Place mattress is then itself available in multiple firmness options. They have a Luxury Firm Pillow Top, a Luxury Firm, an Extra Firm, a Plush Pillow Top, and a Plush model.
For this review, we’re specifically looking at the Plush Pillow Top model, and found it to be a soft to medium-soft in terms of firmness, but with all these options, they Beautyrest Silver does cover the whole soft/firm spectrum.
We think this bed feels like sleeping on a plush cushion, but you can definitely feel the bounce of the pocketed coil system beneath it. Because of the springs, this bed has great responsiveness with none of that stuck-in-the-mud feeling you sometimes get from memory foam beds.
Keep in mind that the more you weigh, the more weight you’ll be putting on the bed, and the softer it will feel for you. Same for the reverse; The less you weigh, the firmer the bed will feel for you. Put differently, softness/firmness is a relative measure.
The firmer models will be best for back and stomach sleepers. This is because back and stomach sleepers need to keep their spines in neutral alignment, instead of curved or arched. A firmer bed will support the hips and shoulders so that they don’t sag into the mattress.
We recommend the Luxury Firm Pillow Top, Luxury Firm, Extra Firm for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. With these models, you will truly remain on top of the mattress. We think they could be a nice solution if you’re dealing with low back pain in particular.
Side sleepers should go for softer models that will offer pressure relief for their hips and shoulders. We recommend the Plush and Plush Pillow Top models for side sleepers. The Plush Pillow Top model will be quite soft, but could be just what you’re looking for if you are nursing shoulder or hip pain and you spend nearly all night on your side.
This bed should be fine for combo sleepers, as well, because there isn’t any stuck-in-the-mud feeling. If you’re mostly a back or stomach sleeper, the Luxury Firm is likely the model you will prefer. If you’re mostly a side sleeper, but you sometimes rotate around, the Plush model should do just fine.
The Beautyrest Silver is a great option for heavier folks, particularly those working with a limited budget. The coils and just overall thickness of the bed make it durable and supportive enough for any body type (within reason). If you’re over 250 lb, we recommend you go for a firmer model, especially if you’re a back or stomach sleeper, because your weight makes you sink into the mattress more, making it feel softer.
We’d say the Beautyrest Silver sleeps temperature neutral. The coils provide great airflow and the silver in the cover is supposed to help redirect heat, and we definitely think that these features work to keep the bed from heating up, but we wouldn’t go so far as saying it sleeps cool.
The temperature at which you sleep will probably have more to do with environmental factors, like whether you have a fan blowing at night, what material your pajamas are, and if you’re sleeping with a weighted blanket.
The firmer models will sleep cooler, because you’ll be sleeping more on top of the mattress instead of down in it. This makes for better airflow. The soft and plush models might sleep warmer because you’ll be more wrapped up in material, but like we said, the coils and silver do a good job of keeping it neutral.
In some aspects, yes, in some, no. If you’re a couple that shares a smaller sized bed, and one of you likes to hog the center while the other is left to cling to the edge, have no fear. The edge support on this bed is great. It will keep you supported instead of letting you fall down to the floor.
As you can see in the image above, there’s hardly any excess compression along the perimeter. The bed actually is designed specifically to have reinforced edges. You won’t see that on a lot of budget-tier beds.
You might run into problems if you or your partner is a sensitive sleeper. The pocketed coil system in the construction of this bed gives it some bounce, which is hard to keep from transferring across the bed.
If you tend to wake up every time your partner tosses or turns in the night, you might want to look for something with better motion isolation, like memory foam. Here’s our list of the best mattresses for motion isolation and light sleepers.
In summary, we think this is a great bed, especially considering the price at which you’re getting it. We like the wide range of firmness options they offer because they can accommodate any sleeper type, plus the coils make this bed an option for any body type, as well.
How did you get this bed?
|Our friends at US-Mattress sent it to us to try out. We never accept any compensation from them (or any brand for that matter) to influence what we say about any mattress, though. So you can rest assured that all opinions are those of the Slumber Yard team members.|
What sheets should I buy to go with this mattress?
|This is a 14” bed, which is on the thicker side as far as beds go. Be sure to get an extra deep fitted sheet to go with this one. Get silk or satin sheets if you like to sleep cool, and flannel sheets if you want to sleep warm.|
How does Beautyrest Silver compare to the Beautyrest Platinum or Black?
|There are so many models within each line that it's hard to succinctly describe the difference between them. Construction, design, and price are the big things, though.|
