How Does The Tuft And Needle Mattress Feel?
If you can picture a softer, more neutral foam, that’s what Tuft and Needle feels like. It’s accommodating, comfortable and kind of bland, but in a good way. It’s one of those beds that basically anyone can get comfortable on because it’s so neutral.
Tuft and Needle is about a medium on the soft-to-firm spectrum. It’s softer than Avocado Mattress but firmer than Nolah Mattress. It is in that sweet spot where a lot of people will find the bed comfortable. We’d consider Tuft and Needle to be more of a medium+ in that it’s slightly firmer than a true medium, but it will soften as you use it.
The other nice thing about Tuft and Needle’s other nice thing is that it’s incredibly responsive, meaning it reacts almost immediately to pressure. It’s not like a memory foam mattress that leaves behind a body impression. Instead, it snaps back into shape quickly.
It won’t be the most pressure-relieving material in the world, but it is suitable for combination sleepers who want to rotate positions with ease. We wouldn’t consider Tuft Needle to be a plush soft mattress, but remember that firmness relies greatly on your particular body type.
Responsiveness is important because it’s an indicator of how easy it will be to rotate sleeping positions on the mattress. If you’re working with a memory foam bed such as Nectar or Novosbed, it takes more effort to switch from your back to your side to your stomach and so on. This can leave you feeling restless since you had to exert more effort to change positions.
Tuft And Needle Construction
This is a 10” all-foam bed with only two layers, hence the reason that a queen size is around $600. Here’s how the layers break down:
- Top layer: 3” layer of proprietary Tuft and Needle Adaptive Foam for comfort and temperature regulation
- Bottom layer: 7” layer of dense polyurethane foam for support
Just because it only has two layers doesn’t mean it’s a bad mattress. In fact, there’s a heck of a lot of people that like Tuft and Needle (apparently 95 percent of people keep the bed, according to the company)
Tuft and Needle upgraded the mattress cover. Previously, it was somewhat transparent and allowed you to see the foams underneath. Most people didn’t care, but others felt like it cheapened the mattress. The current cover has a texture that is soft to the touch and made of polyester and micro polyamide.
While the cover is removable and there’s a zipper on the underside of the bed, you really shouldn’t remove it, not even for cleaning. In fact, if you’re concerned about keeping your mattress clean and want to protect it against stains or the oil from your skin, purchase a mattress protector—Tuft and Needle sells one on its website. Alternatively, you could spot clean whenever stains do arise.
Body Type Analysis
When you start shopping for a new mattress, you need to factor in your weight to find the most comfortable bed for you. If you’re petite (less than 150 pounds), your body will put less pressure onto a mattress and it will feel firmer. With that in mind, we think that the Tuft and Needle Mattress is a good option for lighter people.
If you have an average body type (150-230 pounds), you’ll put a bit more pressure on a mattress but usually not to the point where it will feel too soft. Our review team writes reviews from the lens of an average-sized person, and we think Tuft and Needle could work for you if you’re in this range.
Heavier individuals (more than 250 pounds) will apply more pressure to a mattress and thus will experience it to be softer in general. Additionally, the heavier you are, the more stress you apply to a mattress. This is the reason we recommend heavier folks to look into hybrid or innerspring mattresses, which tend to be more durable and supportive over the long run.
Being an all-foam mattress, we can only recommend Tuft and Needle to petite and average-size individuals.
Tuft and Needle Reviews Sleeper Type Analysis
You might not realize it, but the way you sleep can significantly impact how comfortable you perceive a mattress. That’s because mattresses support your body based on how you’re lying. Overall, most average-sized people will find Tuft and Needle mattresses comfortable, no matter what sleeping position you prefer.
- Side Sleepers
We found that Tuft and Needle is a good bed for side sleepers. Some might find it to be a little too firm from the get-go, but the bed will soften and end up being a lot more comfortable for sleeping on your side. Considering that the average American weighs about 200 pounds (according to the CDC), we think this bed will be fine for a good number of side sleepers.
- Back and Stomach Sleepers
In general, back and stomach sleepers prefer firmer beds. While Tuft and Needle isn’t the firmest bed, it is suitable for average or petite back and stomach sleepers.
What you’re looking for as a back or stomach sleeper is comfort down your spine. If you feel pressure in your low back, there’s a chance that the bed is too soft. Ultimately what you’re looking for is how comfortable you feel when you wake up in the morning. In this matter, we believe Tuft and Needle does a nice job of supporting your hips and keeping your spine in proper alignment.
- Combo Sleepers
Because it’s so responsive, this also makes for an excellent mattress for combo sleepers. You can easily switch positions on the bed without hardly any effort at all.
Is Tuft And Needle A Good Mattress For Couples?
Besides the feel, firmness, support and temperature of a bed, there are two other elements that couples should know when buying a new mattress. In our opinion, however, these following two factors aren’t nearly as important as what we discussed in the top portion of this review.
Like many other all-foam beds, Tuft and Needle doesn’t have fantastic edge support. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing to write home about. If you plan to share a twin XL or a full size mattress, you should either go up a size or consider a firmer mattress—but to be honest, there aren’t many beds at this price point with exceptional edge support.
Luckily for you, Tuft and Needle is good at deadening movement. It’s not the best for motion isolation and light sleepers, but you should be fine. All in all, it’s pretty good for a bed that doesn’t have memory foam.
We would say this bed is temperature neutral. It doesn’t have any phase change cooling materials like the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora or Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt. Still, it won’t sleep nearly as warm as your traditional memory foam mattress.
The cover and the top layer of the adaptive foam are breathable, helping keep the temperature neutral. Again, not a proper cooling mattress, but for the price, can you complain?
What Does The Tuft and Needle Mattress Cost?

|King / Cal King||$850|

Tuft And Needle Mattress Review Verdict
|Weight||Petite (<150 lbs)||Medium (150-230 lbs)||Heavy (>230 lbs)|
It’s not perfect, but there is a lot to like with Tuft and Needle, especially if you care about price. The mattress is comfortable and accommodating.
As we’ve mentioned ad nauseam, this bed is all about value for the money. There’s nothing wholly unique about the bed, but anyone on a budget should put Tuft and Needle on their short list of beds to consider.

Comparing Other Tuft and Needle Beds
The Mint is Tuft and Needle’s higher-end mattress, but it’s still priced affordably. It’s thicker and softer than the original model but is still made entirely of foam. Essentially, what Tuft and Needle did is add a middle transitional layer so you don’t feel as much of the support foams. This made the mattress softer and, therefore, more predisposed to being attractive to side sleepers.
We like the Mint mattress and have included it on multiple best lists. Because it’s softer, Tuft and Needle added more graphite into the top layers so that it would draw heat from the surface more efficiently.
The Mint mattress has an MSRP for a queen size just shy of $1,000, which means it’s about $300 more expensive than the original mattress. Is it worth to upgrade? That depends on the person. If you’re a strict back or stomach sleeper, probably not, unless you weigh 115 pounds. If you’re a side sleeper in search of a plush mattress, then, yes, it probably is worth considering.
Tuft and Needle Company Policies
Like nearly all mattresses sold online, Tuft and Needle ships in a box for free and will typically arrive at your door within a few days of placing the order. Here’s a look at some of the company’s other policies, all of which align with the industry standard.
- Risk-free trial period: 100 nights
- Warranty: 10 years
- Shipping: Free
- Returns: Free
Clearly, the majority of people keep their new mattress, otherwise Tuft and Needle, Purple, and the other mattresses that we’ve reviewed couldn’t afford to offer free shipping, trial periods and free returns. Tuft and Needle says that 95% of people keep their bed. Once the bed arrives, here’s a look at how to properly unbox and set it up.
Tuft and Needle Vs. Other Brands
- Tuft And Needle vs. Casper Mattress
Tuft and Needle and Casper are similar in many ways. Both mattresses have a soft neutral-foam feel and sleep temperature neutral, making them an appealing choice for most people. But the most significant difference between these beds is cost, with Tuft And Needle being a far more affordable option. Find out more in our Tuft and Needle vs Casper comparison.
- Tuft And Needle vs. Purple Mattress
While both brands are prominent in the bed-in-a-box space, there isn’t a ton of similarity between them. For example, Tuft and Needle mattresses have a soft neutral-foam feel, whereas Purple beds are made with the company’s proprietary gel-like Hyper-Elastic Polymer. In terms of cost, Tuft and Needle is a lot cheaper than Purple. Dig into the specifics in our Tuft and Needle vs Purple comparison.
- Tuft And Needle vs. Layla Mattress
As you know by now, Tuft and Needle mattresses are made from soft neutral-foam and have just one firmness level. Layla mattresses, on the other hand, use fluffy memory foam and offer two different firmness levels — on the same bed! That’s because Layla mattresses can be flipped to sleep on either the “soft” or “firm” side. Both brands are well-priced, but you’ll save a bit more money if you buy a Tuft and Needle mattress.
