Zenhaven Mattress Review

Zenhaven is brought to you by the luxury mattress makers over at Saatva and features a few additional designs that make it stand out from your average online mattress. It suits the eco-friendly customer looking for an organic and natural bed and the sleeper who wants a durable mattress for the best bang for their buck.

Saatva’s luxury mattress brand is not going to fit into every person’s budget. The Zenhaven is relatively affordable for latex mattresses, so those in the market for this type of bed will find the prices competitive — and the quality to be worth the cost. But for those looking to get a budget-friendly solution, the Zenhaven may not be quite right for you.

We’ve tried to touch on every little detail that you’d want to know about the Zenhaven mattress in this review. In this process, we ended up writing an extensive post. You can use the jump-to navigator below to hop to any section that grabs your attention.

    • Honest Zenhaven Video Review

If you would rather watch than read, you’re in luck. Here’s a quick video review covering the most important points you should know about the Zenhaven latex mattress. To be quite honest, though, there’s only so much detail we could fit into one single video. Keep reading to learn more about this double-sided online mattress.

Zenhaven Latex Mattress Construction And Design

The Zenhaven mattress has a couple of really great features. First, it’s flippable, with two different firmness levels on either side. Second, it’s made with Talalay latex, which is a high-quality, natural foam made from the sap of rubber trees and offers a number of benefits.

These benefits include being antimicrobial, which makes this mattress resistant to mold and bacteria. The Zenhaven is also dust mite resistant because the reason rubber trees produce latex in the first place is to defend against insects. A third benefit is that it’s hypoallergenic since natural latex is a product of the earth and free of any chemicals. I know, pretty cool, right? But let’s break this mattress down by its construction, as well. Look at the layers:

zenhaven mattress review construction and layers
A look inside the Zenhaven mattress
    • The foundation of the Zenhaven Mattress is the middle layer because the bed is flippable. This layer is made of 100% Talalay latex foam and is very supportive.
    • Sandwiching the base layer are latex “5-zone” layers for maximum comfort and firmness. On one side, there is a firmer option, and the other side features a softer profile. The layers of latex are also aerated with tiny holes for better airflow, which Zenhaven has termed “pinholes,” making it more breathable than memory foam or polyurethane foam.
    • Encompassing this 10” mattress is a layer of organic New Zealand wool, which is a natural flame-retardant barrier. To wrap that all up is the cherry on top — a final organic cotton cover.

All of Zenhaven’s latex is certified by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which is the internationally accepted standard for certifying textiles. This certifies that the Zenhaven mattress does not contain formaldehyde, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, or heavy metals.

Zenhaven and their parent company, Saatva, are also members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC), which means they are “committed to healthy, pro-planet furnishings.” They also claim to use sustainable practices for the construction of all their beds.

    Zenhaven’s Organic Cotton Cover

Nice organic cotton cover on the Zenhaven mattress

As we’ve already stated, the Zenhaven mattress cover is made of organic cotton. It’s soft and thick and also a little aerated for better airflow. It’s not removable, so if you have any accidents, just use some mild detergent and warm water to spot clean it.

Also, remember you can flip this bed. This is a nice feature because it helps to prevent any permanent sagging or impressions. Zenhaven will even come to flip your mattress for you after your initial setup. But we doubt sagging or impressions would be a concern anyway because the latex makes this bed very bouncy and responsive—and latex foam tends to be far more resilient and durable than poly foam, for example.

    Zenhaven Feel And Firmness

    zenhaven mattress firmness

Describing how the Zenhaven mattress feels is a little tricky because it will actually change depending on how you flip the bed. One side of the Zenhaven mattress is a firmer profile, which the manufacturer calls “Gentle Firm.” When compared to other mattresses, we consider the “Gentle Firm” side of the Zenhaven mattress to be between medium-firm to firm on our scale. On the flip side is Zenhaven’s appeal to softer sleepers. This is called “Luxury Plush.” While this side is still a little firmer than some mattresses that are marketed as soft, we categorized it as a solid medium-firm option.

    Firmness

The firmness experience with the Zenhaven mattress will depend on what side you decide to sleep on. If you prefer the Gentle Firm side, you will experience solid back support. The firmness will prevent your hips from sinking and provide an even platform for your body to rest on.

On the Luxury Plush side, you’ll have a little extra sink, but this should provide a level of comfort for those who choose to sleep on their back. There is enough support on the top layer to still experience the necessary support in your lumbar area.

    Pressure Relief

Regardless of what side of the Zenhaven mattress you choose to sleep on, back and stomach sleepers should feel an immediate sense of pressure relief upon laying on the mattress. Because of its relative firmness on both sides, your full body will experience a level of support, particularly in areas that are likely to be experiencing pressure or stress like your back and shoulders. The Zenhaven will help to maintain an overall even surface for your body to rest on.
However, side sleepers may not experience the same pressure relief. Because of how the body is positioned, you will not necessarily benefit from the mattress build and may experience less pressure on your shoulders and hips. This can make for a less comfortable night of side sleeping on a Zenhaven mattress.

    Responsiveness

Because of the latex, you can expect a good amount of bounce with this bed—almost as if it had coils, but it doesn’t. It’s super responsive, so you don’t really sink into this mattress like memory foam, but lay more on top of it.

As with any mattress, a lot of your decision has to do with just personal preference. You might really like the fact that Zenhaven is responsive and makes switching positions easy at night, or you might just prefer the feel of a memory foam mattress; there are pros and cons associated with both.

    Temperature

Latex foam is widely regarded as being a naturally cooler material than, say, memory foam. The bed won’t sleep cold, but it also doesn’t heat up excessively. Read more on how we grade temperature here for all you curious sleepers out there.

Like we talked about in the construction section above, latex foam is aerated, which means it has tiny little holes throughout the foam. These pinholes play a role not only in dictating how firm or soft the mattress will be but also in how hot or cold the mattress will sleep. For the record, these pinholes are necessary for the manufacturing process, but they have the added benefit of contributing to regulating the temperature of the mattress.

Is Zenhaven A Good Mattress For Couples?

    Edge Support

    zenhaven mattress edge support
Just average edge support on the Zenhaven mattress

Regarding edge support, usually, it’s pretty black and white—either good or bad. With Zenhaven, though, it’s a little more complicated. If you lay along the perimeter of the bed, it holds its shape fairly well. Not the best ever, but not bad. If, however, you’re rolling around on the bed, it’s so bouncy and responsive that we’re a little afraid that you might just roll off the edge. This is a little hyperbolic since your sheets and comforter will slow you down, but it just means that Zenhaven doesn’t get a giant thumbs up in terms of edge support.

Read: What Is Edge Support and Why it Matters?

    Motion Isolation

The one trade-off you’re going to experience with latex is that it’s not the best material for deadening movement. Now, to be fair, this is a modern bed, and it is leaps and bounds better than you’re grandma’s 45-year-old innerspring bed in terms of isolating movement. Still, it’s just not the best mattress for light sleepers who care about motion isolation above everything else.

    Zenhaven Mattress Sleep Type Analysis

    • Side Sleepers

Regarding sleeping on your side, it would maybe work if you’re using the “Luxury Plush” side, and you’re a little bit heavier (200-250 lb). This is because side sleepers need more pressure relief from their mattress for their hips and shoulders. Usually, softer mattresses do a better job of this.

    • Back And Stomach Sleepers

The Zenhaven Mattress is most optimal for back and stomach sleepers. This is because it’s plenty firm enough to keep your spine in neutral alignment. Back and stomach sleepers should make sure their heads, shoulders, and hips are all supported while they sleep to avoid back issues and discomfort. Zenhaven does a great job of this on both sides of the mattress.

    • Combo Sleepers

We think combo sleepers will also love this bed. Because it’s so bouncy, it’s easy to switch positions while sleeping on the Zenhaven Mattress. But still, if you’re a combo sleeper, you ideally want to be spending most of your time on your back or stomach.

    zenhaven mattress review side sleepers
Zenhaven is not the best option for petite side sleepers

    Body Type Analysis

    • Petite/Average

Petite and average-weighted individuals usually can get away with any mattress, and the Zenhaven Mattress falls under that category!

    • Heavy

If you have a larger body type, you’ll be putting more weight on the bed, and will sink into it more, therefore making the bed feel softer. If you weigh more than 250 lbs., we suggest you look into a thick bed that has coils for durability and support.

If you’re really interested in a latex bed, we recommend to check out the IDLE Latex Hybrid or Nest Hybrid Latex since both of those incorporate coils (in addition to latex foam and an organic cotton cover). You can also check out our list of the best mattresses for heavy and obese sleepers.

    Zenhaven Mattress Price

We should preface this by acknowledging that latex foam is an expensive, high-quality material. There’s just a more involved, lengthy process by which it’s made compared to a poly foam. Trust us, we got some sticker shock, too, but if you want a really high quality and durable bed, then it’s worth the price. Here’s a breakdown of pricing by size:

    SizePrice (MSRP)
    Twin$1,399
    Twin XL$1,599
    Full$1,999
    Queen$2,399
    King / Cal King$2,999

Unlike many other online mattress brands, Zenhaven doesn’t offer evergreen coupon codes or discounts. However, the company does regularly run sales throughout the year. As such, you may want to check their current promo code or check the company’s website to see current pricing and promotions.

    Zenhaven Mattress Review Verdict

Overall, the Zenhaven mattress is a really nice latex bed. It is most ideal for eco-conscious people who tend to sleep on their back or stomach, and that want a bed that’s great in terms of regulating temperature. While we realize the price tag is pretty heavy, you get tons of benefits from latex, we love the organic cotton cover, and it’s kind of like having two beds in one because it’s flippable.

    Zenhaven Vs

    • Zenhaven Vs Awara

Let’s compare the two all-natural mattresses of Zenhaven and Awara. The Awara Mattress is less expensive, but there’s good reason when you consider that the Zenhaven’s reversible quality means you’re essentially getting two mattresses in one.

You have the option of alternating between medium and firm simply by flipping the mattress. Though, with that said, Awara might be better for heavier folks thanks to its hybrid design.

    • Zenhaven Vs Saatva

Eco-conscious shoppers could go with either the Saatva or the Zenhaven, but the Zenhaven Mattress is the most natural of the two, featuring 100% all-natural materials. Saatva, on the other hand, may be more durable for heavy body types because of the dual-layer innersprings. Saatva is also the more affordable option between the two.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    What is Zenhaven made of?
Zenhaven is a latex mattress. It has three layers of Talalay latex foam, which is a naturally derived material.
    How firm is this bed?
Zenhaven has two firmness levels on the same mattress. It has one side that’s a medium-firm and another that’s truly firm.
    What does Zenhaven feel like?
It has a spongy/responsive feel. There is pressure relief, but more than anything it’s just a highly responsive bed.
    Does it have innersprings?
No. This bed is entirely made of Talalay latex foam.
How did the Slumber Yard team get this mattress?
The Slumber Yard team purchased this bed. We retain full editorial control over the content we publish.
What is so special about Talalay latex?
There are two different ways to make latex: the Dunlop method and the Talalay method. Zenhaven specifically uses Talalay, which we argue is a better form, and it’s also a newer method. Talalay latex is more elastic. Zenhaven describes it as a “springier material with a more buoyant, elevating sensation.”
Can I sleep on this bed if I have a latex allergy?
Yes. It shouldn’t be an issue—when the latex goes through the final wash, the proteins that cause allergic reactions are washed out because they’re soluble. Unless you have a very severe, very sensitive latex mattress allergy, you should be fine.
Where is the Zenhaven mattress made?
It is made in the United States, just like Saatva’s other mattresses.
