Layla Kopak Pillow Review

Layla made its name in the online mattress space with their versatile, flippable memory foam mattress that features a soft side and a firm side. Now, they offer a range of different bedding accessories including the Layla pillow. It features the same signature Layla honeycomb print on the cover, and a fluffy memory foam feel that we find to be pretty comfortable. But how much will you like the Layla Kopak Pillow? Find out in our post were we discuss materials, price feel, ideal body types, and much more.

If you’d like to jump around within this review, feel free to click any of the links below.

    Honest Layla Pillow Video Review

Check out a condensed version of our Layla Kopak Pillow review in our YouTube video above.

    Materials And Construction

The Layla Pillow is made with Kapok fiber and memory foam fill. Kapok is a soft and airy material with more loft than you would get with cotton or wool. It’s made form the fibers in the seed pods of Kapok trees (hence the name, obviously) and has no pesticides or any nasty chemicals, which is great because nobody wants to rub their face in that stuff all night.

Good looking pillow with a super-soft cover

It’s also a hypoallergenic/allergy-friendly (as in a friend to those who suffer from allergies, not a friend to allergies) material.

UPDATE January 2019: The Layla Sleep pillow now has a zipper so that you can adjust the loft of the pillow. As such, it will now work for all sleeping positions. You can see the updated pillow on Layla’s website.

Speaking of the pillow’s cover, it’s copper-infused to help with cooling via rapid heat dissipation. That being said, we found it to be temperature neutral rather than noticeably cool. The Layla website also cites copper’s anti-bacterial and anti-viral qualities and even mentions the anecdotal evidence for copper releasing positive ions that promote health and wellness.

    Sizes, Dimensions & Weight

The Layla pillow comes in two sizes—Queen and King. The Queen is 24″ x 18″ x 8″ and the King is 32” x 18” x 8″. When you lay on it, the loft compresses to around 4”. This is a pretty lightweight pillow at just 2lb.

That might sound heavy for something that has traditionally been a bag of feathers, but it’s far lighter than the Sealy Chill Pillow, for example, which is 6lb, and the 10.2lb Purple Pillow.

    Layla Pillow Feel And Firmness

Layla has somewhat of a hybrid feel that falls somewhere between memory foam and down. Now, we recognize that “somewhere between memory foam and down” is incredibly vague because those two materials are nowhere near similar, but basically, it’s a fluffy pillow.

It’s not as dense as memory foam, but it has more resistance than down (it doesn’t smash down flat like some down pillows do). And that’s because it uses shreds of memory foam rather than feathers or a slab or memory foam.

    Loft And Sleeper Type

How comfortable you find a pillow is due in equal parts to your feel preference and your sleeper type. For example, if you sleep on your side or back, you’ll want a pillow with more loft in order to keep proper alignment, but if you sleep on your stomach, you need something thinner that doesn’t kink your neck.

Like we mentioned above, the Layla pillow’s loft is 8″ uncompressed, and about 4″ compressed. Generally speaking, that’s going to feel like too much height if you sleep on your stomach. Remember, however, the 2019 pillow has an adjustable loft, so you can change the height of the pillow.

We think the Layla pillow will be comfortable for back and combo sleepers, and most side sleepers, too. Though, it really depends on your body type. For example, if you’re more petite, you generally need a thinner pillow regardless of your sleeper type since your neck is short. If you’re larger or heavier, you will likely need a pillow with more loft for additional support.

    Side And Back Sleepers

    layla sleep pillow side sleeper
We think side sleepers will really enjoy this pillow

In our Layla Kopak Pillow review, we found it’s going to be more preferable for back and side sleepers than for stomach sleepers, at least out of the box—the loft is now adjustable.

As a rule of thumb, if you sleep on your side, make sure that you can follow a straight line from your nose down your spine. You don’t want your head too high or low—it needs to be in a neutral position.

For back sleepers, you should make certain that you’re not being pushed forward by the pillow. In order to maintain the “C” curvature in your neck, you should sleep with your head facing mostly upwards. Clearly, you need to do what’s more comfortable for you, but in general, that’s what you want to think about as a side or back sleeper.

    Stomach Sleepers

As it comes in the box, the Layla pillow isn’t great for stomach sleepers (per the judgement of an average-sized man), but if you remove some of the material from the inside of the pillow, you should be just fine.

    Price and Coupon Code

The Layla Pillow is going to cost you $99 for the Queen size or $119 for the King size, and honestly… ouch. When did pillows get so pricey? Probably around the time they got fancy, right?

I mean, that’s an expensive pillow. It’s not the most expensive pillow, though. The Leesa Hybrid Pillow, for example, is $119 for the Queen size.

    layla pillow review close up
A closer look at the 2019 Layla Pillow

The one thing that’s nice with the Layla Pillow is that they do discount it from time to time. For example, when we’re posting this review, they’re running a $25 off promotion that applies automatically at checkout.

    Layla Kopak Pillow Review Verdict

If you want a fluffy, durable pillow, the Layla Pillow might be for you. However, if you sleep strictly on your stomach and tend to warm up excessively, it may not be your favorite pillow of all time. Is it worth the price? That’s up to you. With an MSRP of $99, it’s more expensive than your average pillow on Amazon, but fairly reasonable compared to similar pillows online. Plus, Layla does run promotions from time to time. We also appreciate that Layla offers a 4-month trial period and completely free returns. We were glad to see that Layla updated the pillow in 2019. Making the cover removable—and pillow adjustable—is a big deal.

    Layla Sleep Company Policies

In the online mattress/bedding industry, it’s pretty much standard to provide free shipping, a trial period, and free returns, and in most cases, they include the same with their pillows.

The Layla Sleep pillow comes with free shipping via FedEx, free returns (they’ll send you a shipping label), a 120-night trial period, and a 5-year warranty if you decide to keep it. That means if you don’t like the pillow after 4 full months of use you can still return it for a full refund.

A 120-night trial is one of the longer trial periods that we’ve ever seen for a pillow. And same goes for the warranty. Typically pillows don’t come with a 5-year warranty—they’re more often in the 1-3 year range.

    FAQs

How did the Slumber Yard get this pillow?

We were sent the pillow from Layla Sleep in order to post a review. We did not accept monetary payment, however, to publish good or bad comments on the pillow. We review products independently.

    What is Kapok?

Together with memory foam shreds, this makes up the filling for the pillow. Kapok is made from the fibers in the seed pods of Kapok trees and thus is a natural material.

Why do they use copper in this pillow?

Copper can help with temperature regulation to cool down the pillow.

Is the foam in the Layla Sleep Pillow CertiPur-US certified?

It is indeed. This means it is made without ozone depleters, mercury, lead, and other nasty chemicals and metals.

    How do returns work?

If you don’t want the pillow you can get 100% of your money back within the trial period. They will send out a prepaid return label. There are no return fees at all.
